I was sorting through a box of new herbs when the bell over the door chimed and two women
stepped inside, already in mid-conversation. I carried on with my task, patiently waiting for
them to get a bit closer so I could attend to them. “I’m telling you, it’s King Logan’s men. One
of our warriors came across them in the woods. They had a conversation. Apparently they’re
heading east soon,” the older one said, brushing snowflakes from her shawl.
My brows furrowed as I tried to make sense of the conversation. “East?” her friend repeated,
pausing near the shelf filled with books. “You mean this way?” I kept my head down, letting
my fingers move over the labeled jars like I wasn’t listening. But my heart stilled. Logan’s men
were headed here? I didn’t care much for them. If his warriors had let the cat out of the bag
before they actually got here, then I knew there was nothing to be scared of. They didn’t plan
on getting violent, else they wouldn’t have given us a heads up.
I was even willing to bet they would properly notify the Alpha before coming. No, I wasn’t
worried about Logan’s warriors or their intended raid. I was worried about the man who had
sent them. Would he come along with them? I had never witnessed a raid before, even though
I’ve heard a lot of stories about them. What I couldn’t remember ever finding out was if the
King went along with them. Either way, the news I’d just overheard was enough to have me on
guard.
I turned my attention to the women, realizing they had completely paused by the shelf and
we’re still talking. “They wouldn’t, would they?” the younger woman was asking, dropping her
voice. “This pack hasn’t caused trouble in years.”
“They’ve been raiding every territory on the outer belt. Ours is just next,” the older one said. “And if the rumors are true…well, King Logan isn’t exactly the patient kind. You better believe it’s going to happen sooner than you think.” My stomach clenched. Just then Mara glanced at
me from the counter. She raised her head down a few seconds later, but the gesture was

enough to let me know she had equally overheard their conversation. I stepped forward then,
and into their lines of sight.
“Anything I can help you with?” I asked, aiming for politeness.

The women gave startled smiles, their voices smoothing over like honey, as though they
hadn’t just dropped a bomb into the middle of my day. “Oh no, just browsing,” one of them
said. I gave them a smile that didn’t reach my eyes before walking back to herbs I’d been trying to sort. Great, they hadn’t even required a service. I didn’t understand why Mara let the
pack members breeze by her shop whenever they wanted to, without actually needing a
reading. She let them browse through the books and herbs and items on the shelf just for the
sake of it.
The only answer I’d gotten when I’d asked was that if she made the pack members comfortable
enough in the shop, when they get troubled with anything, we’ll be the first person they seek.
And then we could charge them for a reading, which of course would be completely accurate
since we were using our foresight. They just didn’t know it. They stayed a few minutes longer
before finally leaving, still whispering as they walked out of the shop.
The door had barely shut before Mara said, “We should go.”
I turned toward her. “Go where?”
She crossed her arms, leaning against the counter. “Back to the cabin, and remain there for some days. If Logan’s men are really coming here, we need to decide what we’re doing before
they step foot near this place.”
I blinked. “What do you mean ‘what we’re doing?” I asked, genuinely confused. “Unless he’s
coming with them, which I doubt he is-I don’t see what the problem is. His men are out
looking for a traitor, as far as I know. Whether they recognize me or not, whether they
remember my connection to Logan or not, it wouldn’t change a thing. I’m not the one they’re
looking for.”

“If you’re not going to hide out in the cabin and stay low, then I guess this could be your
chance to let Logan know about Elias.” My mood immediately changed. Let Logan know about
Elias? That was never going to happen. She must have read the expression on my face because
she arched an eyebrow. “Unless…you’re going to continue hiding?”
I stared at her, throat dry. “I’m not hiding.”
She raised a brow. “An unknown location, a child you’re raising and keeping away from his
father…Sienna, this is hiding.”
I hated that she was right.
“I haven’t even seen him in five years,” I said. “I don’t know what he is anymore. What if he’s
not someone I want Elias around?”
“Then you’ll know. But if he is… then maybe it’s time he sees what he walked away from.”
Was it really? Would things go down so smoothly? I swallowed the lump forming in my throat.
“I’ll think about it.” She nodded and went back to wiping down the counter. That night, as I
helped Elias into his pajamas, I caught him glancing toward the sketchbook he’d left on the
dresser. “Did you feel like drawing again today?” I asked gently.
He shook his head. “No… not today.”
I pressed a kiss to his forehead and tucked him in, my heart still caught in that space between
dread and something dangerously close to hope. Logan might come. I didn’t know if I had the
courage to face him. And I didn’t know what that was going to mean, for me, for Elias…
For everyone.
