Two packs. Two godsdamned packs, and still nothing.
We’d basically torn through them from top to bottom. It had taken days, not because they
resisted, but because I’d refused to leave without turning over every stone. I’d walked every
inch of both territories myself, nose to the wind, scenting the air like a madman while the
pack warriors flanked me in stiff silence.
“She’s not here,” Kael had said at the end of the second raid, once we’d swept through the
village outposts. “No sign of her.” I’d had to inform him at some point of my plan to also
search for Sienna alongside Bruce.
“I know,” I’d muttered. Because I hadn’t scented honeysuckle. I hadn’t felt that shift in my
wolf’s chest, that certainty he used to have when she was close. But I’d hoped anyway. Like a
fool. By the time we returned to our own land, the sun had already started to dip. I needed a
distraction. Anything that didn’t involve me going back into that palace and staring down
another night of silence.
I found Livia near the western perimeter, finishing up patrol rotations. She raised a brow as I
fell into step beside her. “Didn’t think I’d see you out here tonight,” she said, brushing a
strand of hair from her cheek. “I figured you’d be pacing the war room by now.” If only she
knew. They had no idea how distracted I was by the thought of Sienna. I’d chalked down my
recent restlessness after five years to the fact that something significant was going to happen.
I didn’t know if it would be the attack or if I and Sienna’s path would cross again, but it had
shifted my attention to her nonetheless. “Thought I’d stretch my legs before I lose what’s left
of my mind.” I said, giving Livia an honest reply.
She searched my face. “Cassian said the last two raids were a bust.”

She glanced sideways at me, her voice dropping. “You really thought she’d be there.”
“I thought if there was any damn justice left in the world, she would’ve been.” I’d made a
mistake, I knew that now. I’d acted like a complete asshole, taking her virginity and discarding
her like she was nothing. But dammit, I wanted to fix things now. Didn’t that count for
something?
Livia was quiet for a beat. Then, “Our enemies are getting smarter that’s for sure. They’ve
somehow managed to evade all our raids despite how thorough we were. Whoever’s backing
Bruce and the rest of the traitors-they know how we operate. We’ve crushed two minor
kingdoms in the last year, Logan. This feels like retaliation. It feels strategic, not desperate.” I
nodded, trying to focus, but my mind was already slipping.
We’ve had rogue attacks in the past. It wasn’t unusual for rogues to mobilize and feel they
could take down and conquer a kingdom. But this attack had been different. It hadn’t just
been some rogues attacking thoughtlessly. No, they’d had to involve Bruce, Luka and some
other pack members. That was enough to know that they had something up their sleeves. And
then, of course, there was the prophecy. Livia kept talking, her voice measured. “You think it
might be the Lycan kings we’d spared during in the past?”
“Could be,” I said, distracted.
We had just one pack left. The chance that either Bruce or Sienna would be there was so low,
it was almost enough to convince me to cancel the raid. But we had to finish what we’d
already started. Also given the fact that we’d already sent a message out to the Alpha. The raid
was scheduled to happen in the next two days, as we still needed time to recover from raiding
the last two packs. If we raided the last pack and we found neither Bruce nor Sienna.
Especially Sienna…
“Logan?”

“You spaced out.”
I grunted. “Does it matter?”
Livia slowed her steps slightly. “You know, at some point, you’re going to have to figure out
what you want.” I already knew what she was talking about. Or rather, who. “If we don’t find
her in this last pack…what then? And if we do, what are your plans? I know I’m being a bother
about this, but I’m only asking because I care. Do you keep her hidden forever? Or do you
really intend to make her Queen?” I ran my gaze down my face. Queen.
“The pack would not accept Sienna easily as Queen, you know that, and that’s even if she
agrees to come back with me.” I reminded her. If I found Sienna next tomorrow, and she
refused to come back to the pack, there wasn’t much that I could do. I might not have
outrightly rejected her, but asking the warriors to escort her out of the pack the morning after
we’d had sex was just as bad.
Livia absentmindedly kicked a rock with her foot. “Maybe you can come clean with her.” I
immediately snapped my head in her direction. She casually raised an eyebrow. “About the
prophecy, the mess the pack is in, all of it.” Livia crossed her hands over her chest. “It might
be unfair to dump all that on her, but desperate times call for desperate measures. If she’s
really the one the prophecy spoke-even though we’re not completely sure of that, right now,
then you, Mister, have some grovelling to do.”
“I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.” I told her, just before she gave me a pat on my
chest and began leaving. I stared at her back, knowing she was unsatisfied with my answer.
She didn’t understand…
It was the only truth I could really give.
