I told myself I wasn’t waiting.
I told myself I wasn’t keeping an ear out for news of Logan’s raid. That I wasn’t watching the
moon phases in the corner of my notebook and calculating how many hours were left before
Logan’s warriors made it to our territory. I told myself I wasn’t thinking of him every time we
had customers at the shop and they talked about the happenings in the pack, or every time
Elias looked just a little too much like him.
That I wasn’t secretly waiting for his presence, waiting for the thrill of knowing he was close
- I hated how affected I was by just the thought of him. I wondered how I’d even managed to
go by for so long without giving into the urge to return to his pack and force him to accept
both his son and me. His son. Our son. The heir to the Iron Fang Throne. I wondered what I’d
do when I saw him again. If I saw him again. Would I turn and walk away without letting him
know I was ever there? Or would I let him see what he gave up?
Or would I freeze, my heart doing that stupid thing it always did around him, forgetting every
reason I had to stay angry? I didn’t want to keep wondering what my reaction would be. I
wanted to make a decision before he showed up. So I finally agreed. When I walked out of the
shelves, it was to find Mara arranging her cards in a corner of the room. She raised her head,
and a second passed before I noticed the excitement slowly filtering into her eyes. “I’m not
reading things wrongly, am I?” She asked, barely hiding her smile.
I made a show of playfully rolling my eyes, pulling a stool and sitting across from her. I
cleared my throat. “I’ve thought about it,” I began. “And I’ve decided to give it a shot. You
wanted to do a reading to find out what the dream had been about?” I reminded her. “The one
where Logan had been all bloodied? I’m ready for it now.” She searched my face, tilting her
head.

“You sure?” she asked gently. She always asked the customers that before she gave them a
reading, for the ones that had cold feet or second thoughts. Agreeing to a reading was the way
part, as I’d come to understand. The hard part came with dealing with the bad news you might
receive. Fortunately, those were on extremely rare occasions. I remember thinking at one
point that the goddess really loved the members of Mara’s pack. I took a deep breath, nodding
my head in response to Mara’s question.
“Yes, I’m sure.” I replied. “Is he indeed going to be here, or if it’s just the warriors…I want to
know what the dream meant. Why I’d even had it in the first place.” If after all these years, we
were still connected in some type of way. Mara’s eyes softened as she gave me a small nod to
show she understood. She began laying the cards out one by one, face down. I couldn’t help
the tension I felt as I watched her prepare to give me a reading. What if it was bad news? I
knew Logan was still alive, but what if the dream had been a kind of warning?
My fingers tightened in my lap as she flipped the first card. The Knight of Swords, reversed.
The second card was a Tower. And then The Moon. Each one felt less harmless than the other,
but somehow more mysterious. Mara’s eyebrows furrowed. She pulled a few more cards, trying
to appear like everything was alright, even though I could see the shift in her demeanor
shifted. Something wasn’t right. She reached for the last card in the spread and turned it over.
The card was blank.
I stared. A blank card? I’d never seen someone get that before. My eyes lifted to hers. “What
does that mean?” I asked. Her fingers hovered over the table, then slowly retracted.
“It means I can’t see anything,” she finally said.
My stomach dropped. “What do you mean, you can’t?”
“I mean, there’s no thread to follow. It’s all just a wild haze.” I was only more confused by her
answer. A wild haze? What did that mean?
“But you always see something,” I said, feeling my voice get a little sharp. “Even if it’s vague.
Even if it’s just a-a feeling.”

She nodded. “I know. And that’s why this is important.”
My fingers dug into the hem of my sweater. “Important how?”

She held my gaze, hers unwavering. “Because, Sienna, it means the path isn’t chosen yet.
Random cards and a blank one in the end means whatever happens next…it hasn’t been
decided. Not by fate. Not even by prophecy.” She explained. “Your choice will write the rest of
the story.”
A breath left my lips.
My choice.
“I don’t want that responsibility,” I whispered. Why was the goddess leaving it up to me? This
wasn’t what I’d wanted to hear. “I’m just trying to survive. That’s all I want to do. Not carry
the weight of a decision that could mold the future.”
“I know. But sometimes making a decision and surviving can come in one package.” She
paused, tapping the blank card. “He’s in your dreams for a reason. Your powers were reacting
to something. And by now, I think we both know the bond’s still there.” I nodded, but I was
barely listening. Yes, I knew the bond still lingered, for whatever reason.
Maybe it was because he hadn’t officially rejected me. Maybe it was because he was yet to get
mated to the wood he must have picked during the choosing ceremony. I didn’t know. It didn’t
matter. What mattered was that I had a decision to make.
And I had to make it soon.
