Logan
There was something about this pack that rubbed me wrong before we even crossed its
borders.

Not wrong in the way of danger, no. Not even in the way of hostility. Just…off. Off enough
that my wolf hadn’t stopped pacing inside my head since we entered. I’d figured it was
probably because this was the pack Bruce was hiding in. But after a few minutes, I’d quickly
realized my wolf was restless for an entire different reason, one I couldn’t quite narrow down.
There was just this scent in the air… Oddly, it wasn’t Sienna’s either. I had almost lost hope
when I hadn’t been able to pick up her scent, until I’d forced myself to remember once scent
could be camouflaged. If she was smart-which she was, and if she truly didn’t want me
coming after her, it was something she would have done. Maybe even a long time ago. I let the
hope that she could have masked her scent stop me from turning back and heading to the
pack, leaving my warriors to scout for Bruce.
The bastard still hadn’t turned up.
At some point we’d debated the possibility that he was already dead. If someone had killed
him, whoever he might have been working for, or somebody else-then finding him in a pack
was impossible. They would have gotten rid of his body a long time ago. We’d only ruled out
the possibility because it was something we would have felt, his bond with the pack severing.
Kael and Cassian walked a step behind me, both quiet as we made our way to the Alpha’s den
in silence, no one needing to say what we were all thinking. This was the last of the three
remaining packs. If we didn’t find Bruce-or any sign of Sienna-here, we were out of options.
Unless we were going to begin the raid from the start, and we didn’t have enough resources
for that. My warriors had deeply searched all the packs in the province. It would take them a
little while to go again.

We made it to the pack house within minutes. The Alpha greeted us with an unreadable
expression. He looked calm on the outside, but I could tell that was not the case from how
wildly his heart was beating. It wasn’t everyday a Lycan King visited your pack in search of a
traitor. “Alpha King Logan,” he said, bowing his head slightly. “We weren’t expecting your
arrival so soon.” So soon? It was hardly soon. It was already a few days since I’d sent them the
message.
Brushing his response aside, I nodded once. “We’re not here for pleasantries. One of mine
went missing. A traitor. We have reason to believe he might be hiding in your pack, or at least
have passed through it.” His eyes flickered to Cassian and Kael behind me before settling back
on mine.
“You want to raid my territory.” He said slowly.
I didn’t blink. “I want to find out who’s hiding him. If no one is, you have nothing to worry
about.”
The Alpha hesitated. It was a subtle hesitation, but I still caught it. I wondered if he hesitated
because he was harbourin traitors in his pack. Or if he was just skeptical about the raid.
Whatever the case was, he made up his mind really fast. “I’ll grant it. On the condition that
it’s done swiftly. My people—”
“I don’t need your conditions,” I cut in flatly. “Only your permission.”
That was the end of it.
By the time we stepped out of the pack house, Cassian was already organizing the warriors
into search lines. Kael headed west with a handful. I took east. The pack was expansive, I had
to give him that. Maybe even too expansive for him to keep an eye on everything that
happened in it. It was obvious he’d won a few battles and conquered a few lands. The pack
stretched over uneven hills and scattered homes, like he couldn’t give a second thought where
any of them lived.

I scanned my surroundings, realizing I’d lost almost all my warriors except Cassian. We were
alone now as I continued venturing into the woods. I had just taken one step further when I
felt her. It was a split-second shift in the air, really. Barely a ripple. But it was enough to make
my wolf go still. Like someone had reached into my chest and tightened a fist around my
lungs. I stopped walking, and Cassian, who was flanking me now, paused too.
“What is it?” he asked.
I ignored his question. My ears rang, my heart kicking up so fast I thought I might lose it. She
was here. That was the only thing echoing in my head. Over and over again. She was here. I
turned to Cassian, my voice low. “She’s in this pack.”
He looked at me, brow furrowed. It took him a second to get my drift, but when he did his eyes
widened. “Are you sure?”
I didn’t hesitate. “More than I’ve ever been sure of anything in my life.”
He gave one slow nod, then began heading towards the pack, giving me room to track her
down with only her scent in the air. I didn’t know where exactly she was. I didn’t know who
she was with, where she was hiding in the pack. I didn’t even know what the hell I’d do when I
found her. But I knew she was close.
She’d walked through this very path, walked around the pack. As long as she was here, I was
going to find her. I wouldn’t leave-would stop at nothing-until she was standing right in
front of me. And when that happened? When I eventually found her?
I was never letting her go ever again.
