My head snapped up at the sound of the bell chiming from the door.
Mara and I were behind the counter, sorting through a delivery of crystals, when one of the
pack warriors stepped in, his eyes hard and the expression on his face unsmiling. The air in
the room immediately thickened and I felt my stomach go tight. I locked eyes with Mara, and I
could tell we were both thinking the same thing; what was he doing here? In the almost six
years since I’ve been in the pack, we’ve never gotten a visit from any of the pack warriors.
Had they found out about Mara’s powers?
Or worse…
Elias and me?
The door closed behind him as he took one step further into the room. “The Alpha has issued
a directive,” he announced, his expression remaining impassive. I felt my heart drop when his
eyes met mine, but I quickly realized he was only giving me a fleeting glance. His gaze went
round the room next. “Shops are too close for the day. You are to head home, immediately.”
Mara’s hands stilled, halfway through unwrapping a velvet pouch. “What’s going on?”
The warrior barely blinked. “Raid. One that started twenty minutes ago.”
My thoughts went out to one person. Elias. In a second I was reaching for my scarf,
immediately wrapping it around my neck. Before Mara could ask another question, the warrior
had already turned and left. There were no further details, no explanations, Mara hurriedly
locked the door before turning to me. She took in my hurried movements. “You think it’s
Logan?” She asked, even though we both knew the answer.

It was obviously Logan. Who else’s raid had the pack been talking about? I looked at her,
seeing the tension around her eyes. She inhaled a deep breath, and then she was grabbing her
shawl. “I’ll go get Elias,” she said, pulling it over her shoulders.
“I’ll come with you.”
“No.” Her response was instant. She paused, grabbing her bag midway, turning to face me. “If
you really don’t want to see him, then it’s best you go back to the cabin.”
My heart took a jump at her words. Dear goddess, Logan was in the pack. Where exactly was
he? The pack center? Towards the borders? It felt like my heart was about to explode. Did he
know I was hiding here? Could he tell? Did he know I’d had his child? It wasn’t until now I
realized just how unprepared I was to be in his presence. I couldn’t bear coming face to face
with him. Not yet. I didn’t respond to Mara’s words. I just turned and reached for my bag.
She was right. I really didn’t want to see him.
She promised me she was going to bring Elias to the cabin in one piece, and I trusted her to
keep her word. I knew she would give up her own life before she let anything happen to him. I
locked closed the shop as she headed for the academy. I pulled my scarf a little tighter around
my neck as I began making my way to the cabin. The streets were already half-abandoned as I
walked, shop owners dragging the shutters close.
Several warriors were sweeping past the pack in armor. I easily recognized them as Lycan
warriors from Logan’s pack. I kept my head down and moved fast, feeling more anxious with
each second I spent outside the cabin. One minute, I was winding through the path toward the
cabin, my mind racing with thousand thoughts I wasn’t ready to sort out yet. The next, I felt
- A cold yet electric shift in the air. I barely had the time to figure out what had caused it.
And then…I saw him.
Logan.

He was standing between the trees ahead, half-shadowed, his head tilted slightly like he was
listening for something. His back was to me. For a moment, I just froze. Like prey. Staring.
This wasn’t real. This wasn’t real. There was no way Logan was actually standing just a few
metres away from me. He still looked every bit as hot as the last time I’d seen him, maybe
even hotter, even though I was only staring at him from behind. Has he gotten taller? Had his
shoulders gotten broader?
I hadn’t seen him in years, and yet every inch of him looked carved from memory. My breath
caught in my throat. I couldn’t do this. I wasn’t ready. He’d gotten better over the years, and
I’d only gotten more…Turn around. Walk away. The urges were strong and violent, and I knew
there was no way I was going to muster the courage to face him now. Or ever. I took a slow,
careful step backward. Then another. Then another. He wasn’t looking. He still hadn’t turned.
Still holding my breath I took yet another step backward.
And then I stepped on a twig.
I could swear that the snap echoed louder than thunder.
He turned, his gaze immediately latching onto mine.
All the breath left my lungs. I felt a jolt of electricity, one that made me shiver visibly. I
watched the emotions on his face. Recognition, shock, disbelief… determination? His chest
rose, like he was just barely managing to keep a leash on the beast inside him. I hated how
badly a part of me had missed being looked at like this, even though he’d only done it for a
few hours that night. He was looking at me like I was something he’d been chasing in his
dreams and had finally caught sight of.
He took a step toward me.
That was all it took to snap me back to reality.
The voice in my head was clear.

I took a step back, his eyes tracked my movement. But that was all I was willing to notice. I
turned on my heels.
And I ran.
