Chapter 42
Logan
She was fast.

Faster than I’d expected her to be. One minute I’d been taking a step towards her, and the
next she’d been taking off faster than the wind. “Sienna!” I was already moving, my boots
thudding against the earth as my heart slammed in my chest. “Sienna, wait. Please.” She
didn’t turn, didn’t even act like I’d said a word. If anything, she picked up her speed. She
ducked between trees, vanished behind bushes, cut sharp around rocks like she knew these
woods better than the back of her hand.
Which she probably did.
I kept calling after her. Kept chasing. She didn’t look back once. It didn’t take long for me to
lose her; she knew the woods better than I did, and age was running like her life depended on
- Thankfully, I didn’t entirely lose her. The physical trail ended, but her scent-gods, her
scent was stronger than memory. I followed the familiar scent of honeysuckle and vanilla
hanging in the air. My wolf stirred, anxious and straining against my control, going crazy with
the urge to have her.
I let my wolf lead me in her direction-he was better attuned to the scent of his mate—and
soon enough, I found her. She was hiding behind a jagged boulder, pressed against the stone
like she was trying to disappear into it. I could tell she was holding her breath. The minute I
stepped around the rock and into her line of sight, she immediately let it out, her face a mix
of fire and fury. “Don’t,” she snapped, before I could say a word.
She looked so pissed. So, so pissed. Deep down, I knew I deserved every ounce of hate after
how I’d treated her, but that didn’t mean it still didn’t cut that she was barely looking at me.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” I said, almost breathless, but not from running. “Just…just give me
a second. That’s all I’m asking.”

“I already gave you more than a second,” she said, her voice cutting as sharp as glass. “I
trusted you! And what did you do? You used me and then discarded me like I was nothing.”
“I didn’t-” I reached for her, a sharp pain stabbing my chest when she flinched. My stomach
sank as my hand fell lamely to my side. “I didn’t mean to-”

“Leave. Me. Alone.” Her voice cracked at the end, but the fierceness in her eyes easily made up
for it. She angrily wiped the year leaking from her eyes with the back of her palm, making a
move to leave.
I acted instinctively, stepping in front of her path with my hands out. “Please,” I said, softer
now. “Just hear me out.” My tone was pleading, but it was obvious from my stance that I
wasn’t letting her leave until she had listened to me. Her eyes shot daggers as she continued
glaring at me like she wanted to burn a hole through my chest…
“You’re such a jerk,” she said through clenched teeth. “You think just because you’re King, you
can command me into listening to you against my will?”
Things were spinning out of control. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. “No, I—”
“News flash, I’m not in your pack anymore,” she snapped. “You don’t get to chase me down
and trap me between boulders and trees and expect me to suddenly forget how you made me
feel like nothing.”
Gods, I’d almost forgotten how much she could rile me up, how easily she got under my skin. “If you’d just stop being so stubborn-”
That was the wrong thing to say.
I knew it the second I heard my own words. Her eyes flared with anger. “Stubborn? You kicked
me out of your life like I was disposable. And now you come back, act like you’re the one hurt,
the one owed something?” I opened my mouth, but she steamrolled over me. “You abandoned
me, Logan. And you think just showing up now makes it all better?” Her voice broke, hitting

me harder than any punch could. “You have no idea what you did to me.”
There was a silence that followed that I didn’t know how to fill.

How could I explain how much I’ve craved her presence desperately since that night? Her
spine was ramrod straight as she looked me in the eye. “I don’t ever want to see you again.”
I laughed. Not because it was funny, but because I couldn’t believe how much it hurt me to
hear her say those words. “That’s not what you said that night.”
Her hand flew in a blink, but it was slow enough that I caught her wrist. She was breathing
fast, her chest rising and falling like she’d just run another mile. Her back hit the tree behind
her as I stepped in closer, her hand still in mine, but loosening. “Calm down,” I murmured,
feeling my heart race. “Please.” She stared up at me, lips parted like she had more to say but
didn’t trust herself to say it. Our breathing filled the space. Gods, that pull between us was
still there. Pulsing. Familiar.
Dangerous.
I immediately let her go, taking a step back.
“I’ll be back,” I said. “I’ll give you some time to get used to me finding you, and after that… I’ll
be back.”
I turned and left, not waiting for an answer, barely stopping myself from ripping her clothes
off and taking her right there.
Cassian raised an eyebrow the second I met up with the others. Kael glanced between us. “You
good?” I nodded, my jaw tight.
Cassian crossed his arms. “You look like you just ran through hell.”
“I found her,” I said, my voice rough.
