Minutes later, and I was still struggling to catch my breath.
I couldn’t believe Logan had actually been standing in front of me. I couldn’t believe I’d
actually spoken with him after more than five years. I touched my hand to my chest, willing
my racing heart to slow down. I should have put more effort into avoiding him. I’d expected
his warriors to be the only ones raiding the pack.
How would I know he planned to show up too?
And I had tried to leave without alerting him. But of course, the moon goddess hadn’t been on
my side. She never really was. I increased my pace as soon as the cabin came into view,
anxious to hold Elias. What if he’d been with me? What if Logan had found out about the
child he’d never known he had in the first place?
I pushed open the cabin door, scanning my gaze a little frantically around the house. I didn’t
pause when I set my sights on Elias, closing the distance between us in three strides only and
pulling him into a tight hug. My chest was pounding, my hands trembling as I knelt down on
the floor and wrapped my arms around him. “Are you okay?” I whispered, my voice cracking a
little.
He buried his face in my shoulder and nodded. “I’m fine, Mom. We closed school early but
still, I didn’t have to wait, because Mara picked me up right on time and even made pancakes
when we got back.” I let out a shaky breath as I ran my fingers through his hair, trying to
steady myself. Mara stepped out of the bathroom then, noticing my shaky hands before I could
hide them from her.
Her eyes were sharp as she looked at me. “Everything alright?”
I forced a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “Yeah… just ran into someone.”

I almost winced when her gaze sharpened. I just ran into someone? Of course she would get
suspicious. “Who?” she wanted to know.
“Logan,” I said, sinking down onto the couch. “I mean, even though you’d asked me to return
to the cabin, I hadn’t actually expected to bump into him. One minute, I’m trying to quietly
move back and the next, he’s standing right in front of me.” I darted a glance at Elias,
realizing how much I’d spilled. Luckily, he wasn’t listening to our conversation, his attention
was on the last bite of pancake he had left.

Mara glanced at Elias then, before glancing back at me. “Elias, why don’t you go wash up? Put
the plate in the sink, wash your hands and freshen up.” Elias grinned and darted off, leaving
me alone with Mara. “Tell me everything,” she said softly.
I rubbed my hands over my face, trying to shake off the rush of memories. “He wanted to talk,
wanted to apologize.” I slanted a look at Mara. “I didn’t give him the chance, of course. He was
upset by the attitude. We had a small altercation, and that was it. I let him know he had no
right to corner me and demand a conversation after how he’s treated me, and then… Well, I
left.”
I didn’t want to go into more details than that. I knew she would connect the dots and figure
out the rest of the things I hadn’t said; that he wanted me to return to the pack. Mara folded
her arms across her chest. “If he’s trying to mend a burnt bridge, I suggest you let him. Or at
least hear him out.”
I didn’t respond.
She sighed, evidently deciding to leave the conversation for some other day. I was glad she
could silently tell how shaken I was by the situation even though I was trying to play it cool. I
needed some time to think. To process what the hell had just happened. It felt like my dreams
and my nightmares had collided and had a baby. And the way I’d felt being in his presence
again after so many years…
She nodded toward the bathroom. “Go splash some water on your face before Elias gets out.

I managed a weak laugh as I got up, heading for the small kitchen. The cold water from the
tap was enough to snap me out of the haze. I cupped my hands, splashing the water over my
face again and again, trying to calm the raging emotions inside me. Looking up at the mirror, I
barely recognized myself. Seconds later, I dried my face and took a deep breath. Logan was
here. After all these years, after everything I’d done to keep us safe, he’d found me.
Us.
And now, I had to decide what I was going to do about it.
By the time I stepped out of the bathroom, Elias was already out of the bedroom, laying on
the rug and playing around with his sketchbook. Mara raised her head up from the book she
had picked up. “Any idea how you’re going to handle the situation yet?”
I shrugged, stepping further into the room. “I’m just going to watch. See how far he’s willing
to go to get me back.”
A small frown took over her face but she quickly masked it. “Hhmm…”
I immediately got defensive at the non-committal sound she made. “He left me. Chose his
pack over me, and therefore over the child we’d made together. If he wants us back, he’s going
to have to prove it. I’m not going to make it easy.”
Mara hesitated, then said, “Maybe you should tell him about Elias.”
I shook my head firmly. “No. Not yet.” Before she could say anything else, I pressed my lips
together. “Let me handle this my way.”
She looked at me for a long moment, then nodded. “Alright.”
It was the response I wanted, but suddenly I wished she had pushed further. I sighed, heading
to the bedroom to get some sleep…
