There were slightly too many people when Mara and I got to the market.
As an unspoken rule, we usually didn’t go shopping except on days when the market was
supposed to be significantly less busy. Or days when we had to urgently get supplies; which
almost never happens because Mara and I were very conscious of our good supplies, making
sure we’d restocked before we completely ran out.
Today, however, was not at all one of the rare occasions where we had to urgently grab
something. It was the first day of the week, so everyone was supposed to be out and about
their business. I scanned our surroundings once more. If Mara had known this many people
would be out, she definitely would have made us wait a few more days. She’d been a lot more
conscious about laying low ever since Logan had showed up at the pack.
As we paused by a stall adorned with vibrant fabrics, I noticed a pair of she-wolves whispering
behind their hands, their eyes darting toward me before quickly averting. A knot formed in my
stomach. This wasn’t the first time I’d caught such glances since we’d entered the open square.
I hated the feeling of being talked about. At first I tried to brush it off, but when I noticed
they were unrelenting, I couldn’t help but inch closer to Mara.
At the end of the day, these were her pack members, not mine. “Did you see that?” I murmured
to her, keeping my gaze fixed on the bolts of cloth before us. She raised her head for only a
second before putting it back down.
Nodding subtly, she slanted me an unreadable look. Her somewhat stealthy reaction only
caused my hackles to increase. “Ignore them,” she advised, selecting a deep blue fabric and
adding it to our basket. “Oftentimes, people get bored. You’d be surprised by the kind of drama
they would stir up to keep themselves entertained.” She moved on to some other display of
clothes.

I understood what she was trying to say; that they had never really been curious about their
surroundings-myself included-until now, when things had gotten tense in the pack due to
the raid, and everyone was secretly waiting for the drop that would cause the spill over. I tried
to shake off their stares but I couldn’t. It didn’t seem like they were simply being curious, I
thought, eyeing the group of wolves subtly pointing at me.
No, there was something else at play here. I paused for a few beats, waiting for Mara to take a
few steps forward so there could be some space between us. And then summoning courage, I
approached one of the she-wolves who had been whispering earlier. “Excuse me,” I began,
offering a tentative smile. Her eyes widened like she hadn’t actually expected me to walk up to
her.
She anxiously darted her eyes to the side, but the rest of her friends had already dispersed. I
forced my smile to remain in place. “Is there something you’d like to say to me?”
If anything, she looked even more shaken by my question. She’d probably thought I was going
to act like I hadn’t caught her staring and pointing, and rather made small talk about
something like the weather. She cleared her throat, trying to quickly compose herself. “Oh, it’s
nothing,” she replied, trying to scurry off.
“Please,” I pressed gently, stepping into her path. I noticed Mara sending me a worried glance
just then, but I ignored it. Making my smile as polite as I could, I carried on. “I’ve noticed the
glances and whispers, and honestly? I don’t think I can ignore them any longer. If there’s
something I should know, I’d appreciate your honesty.”
She hesitated, glancing around before leaning in slightly. “There are rumors,” she whispered.
“People say the Lycan King has been asking about you. That his warriors have been seen
around, inquiring.” My blood ran cold. There was only one Lycan King she could be talking
about. Logan. Equal parts anger and something else-something I would rather not name-
filtered into my skin.
He was inquiring about me.

My heart skipped as I thought about what it would mean for Elias. I cleared my throat, trying
to mask the brewing turmoil. “Can you tell how much they found out?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Not exactly. But I heard from someone that the wolf they’d spoken to
hadn’t given them much.” She peered at me a little suspiciously. “No one really knows much…
about you.”
Realizing she’d said everything she knew, I thanked her and returned to Mara, relaying the
conversation to her. Mara’s jaw tightened. “I hadn’t heard about his digging, but I should have
expected it,” she admitted. “If he really wants you back in the pack like you’d said, he
definitely is not the type to simply give up without first trying.”
Her words echoed in my mind, long after we’d finished getting all the supplies we needed. I
couldn’t help but worry about Elias, and if Logan knew of the child I was deliberately keeping
away from him.
Back at the cabin, I put down the bags and immediately headed for the bathroom to steady my
racing thoughts. The reflection staring back at me in the mirror looked just as unsettled as I
felt. Tying my hair up in a loose bun, I made my way to my room. My eyebrows drew into a
frown when I noticed the folded piece on the nightstand. Elias had been at the store while
Mara and I had gone shopping, so the cabin had been empty.
I took a step back to inspect the room. There were no signs of a break in. Nothing was out of
place. And yet, there was an obvious note sitting on the table. Hands trembling, I picked up
the paper and unfolded it. The scribbled words had a chill skating up my spine.
‘Well, well, well. If it isn’t the cherry on top of the cake.’
