I stood under a thick tree towering over two hundred feet, Nessa standing beside me as we
silently inspected the wolves hauling crates of supplies across the training ground. The sun
was barely up but Nessa and I were already knee-deep in pack duties. This was the perfect
time to move the supplies; when the training ground was still empty.
“You’re unusually quiet today,” Nessa remarked, carefully watching one of the wolves as he
adjusted a heavy box on his shoulder. I raised my shoulder in a shrug, secretly wishing I was
supervising on my own. I needed a bit of silence to sort my thoughts out, and I knew Nessa
was the wrong person to expect that from. She preferred to be more… active than being quiet.
“Just thinking,” I replied, my voice gruff.
She nodded, her attention coming to me for a moment before she stared back at the warriors.
“About Sienna?”
I shot her a sideways glance. Nessa had always been perceptive, sometimes annoyingly so. I
barely stopped myself from admitting that Sienna was all I could think about lately. A small
frown formed on my face. Did she think about me just as much? Did she even care? I’d finally
found an explanation to why she was constantly on my mind recently.
Apparently since the mate bond hadn’t been officially broken, it was normal for it to return
stronger when the two mates were about to cross paths. “Yeah,” I admitted. “I messed up.”
She dragged her eyes away from the warriors who was setting the box down and slanted a look
at me. “You think?”
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. “I was trying to protect her, but I went about it all
wrong.” A small frown overtook my face. Sienna had definitely changed since the last time I’d
seen her. She was still as stubborn and just as proud, but now there was a quite confidence

underneath that was fiercer than it had been in the past.

A confidence I knew stemmed from the fact that she’d had to herself up after I’d tested her
like she was trash. Nessa noticed the troubled look on my face and folded her arms across her
chest, staring out into space. “Logan, you can’t force someone to accept your protection,
especially not someone like Sienna.” She said quietly. “Not only is she independent now, you
also didn’t exactly treat her the best way when you had her.”
It was the truth.
My hands curled loosely beside me. Truthfully, there was no time for back and forths.
Whatever might have happened in the past, we needed to move on from it. Her, more than me.
We had an enemy prowling around. I was still her mate, and this time, I was determined to
fulfill my duty of protecting her. The raid had been futile, Bruce was still MIA.
And whoever the mastermind behind the attack was, he was definitely planning on taking his
sweet time plotting. I dragged my attention back to my conversation with Nessa. She was
saying Sienna was independent now? “I know.” I stated. The sun was beginning to fully set,
but thankfully the warriors were already rounding up with moving the boxes. I ran a hand
downy face. “I just… I let my fear of choosing an Omega as my mate get the better of me.”
Nessa’s expression softened. “Then show her that you’ve changed. Apologize, sincerely. Let her
make her own choices.”
Her words lingered in my mind long after all the boxes had been completely moved. I made
my way back to the pack house, took a quick shower, and set out towards Sienna’s pack. The
warriors guarding the perimeter were going to inform the Alpha of my presence, so I made a
show of stopping by the Alpha’s place before subtly making my way to Sienna’s cabin. The
path to the cabin was familiar. I knocked on the cabin door when I arrived, waiting patiently
for a response.
Just as I was about to knock a second time, the door creaked open. Sienna stood behind the
door, her eyes wary. I took a comforting step back.

“Can we talk?” I asked softly.
She hesitated, then stepped out of the cabin, closing the door behind her and moving away
from the cabin. At a corner of my mind, I wondered if she hated seeing me around her new
home that much. “I came to apologize,” I began when she paused. “For everything, but
especially how I acted the last time I was here. I was wrong to try and control your choices.”
She didn’t respond immediately, looking like she was debating whether or not to trust my
apology. After a beat, she slowly nodded. “Thanks, but… I need time to process this.”
My reply was almost instant. “Of course.”
A silence settled between us. I could sense she wanted to say something. “What about the
choosing ceremony?” she finally asked.
A part of me was secretly glad she was bothered about it. It was a sign she cared, right? “It
was the elders’ idea. I didn’t choose anyone.” I searched her face, tamping down on my pride
as I asked. “Is there someone else?”
She pressed her lips together, “No, there isn’t.” She moved her gaze away. “I need some time
tol think about your apology, Logan. Give me a few days before you come back.”
“I understand.”

The envelope on my desk was the first thing I noticed the moment I stepped into my study
room. I picked it up, opening it with a sense of foreboding. Inside was a written note.
‘Taking a little break. The game has become far more intriguing now that I’ve uncovered your
little secret. Rest assured, when I return, I won’t just be playing-I’ll be ending it. For all of
you.’
I read the note over and over again, my blood running a little colder with each read. I’ve

uncovered your little secret. The ‘little secret’ could only mean Sienna. I carefully placed the
note in a file on my desk. It wasn’t the first time someone had managed to leave anonymous
threat notes in my study, but it was the first time they weren’t just directed at me. If anything,
my need to have Sienna back at the pack only intensified.
I had to get through to her before he got to her first.
