The sun was a little too hot on my back, but it was the kind of heat I didn’t mind. Mara and I
were working together in the garden at the back of the cabin, and I was already looking
forward to the cold shower I was going to have afterwards. My knees were almost to the
ground, the gloves on my hands making me unable to actually feel the soil.
Mara had suggested we take a day off from the shop so she could weed out the grasses in the
garden. She liked to tend to the garden on her own, but today I’d insisted on helping out,
needing the peace and quiet the task brought. Elias was only a few feet away from us, playing
around with a butterfly he’d found by the flower bed.
For a second or two, it was peacefully quiet. There was almost no noise being made, aside the
quiet rustling of leaves and the almost no audible hum of bees. A few seconds later, Mara
began humming a low tune under her breath. I didn’t recognize it, but somehow it felt
familiar. As I listened in on the sound, I let my mind shift to Logan’s visit the other day.
It was the second day since he’d come bearing an apology. My greatest fear about his visits
was him accidentally stumbling on Elias during one of them, but thankfully, it seemed even
the moon goddess was trying to keep my secret. He’d somehow managed to show up whenever
Mara and Elias were on their way back from the academy.
I would be lying if I said I trusted his apology. A part of me wished he had continued to be
demanding so I would have a good time refusing him. But after he had apologized and
admitted his mistakes like he had, what was I supposed to do? Things would have been much
easier if I didn’t have a child I was keeping from him.
Or if I wasn’t from a bloodline that was basically a taboo.
Sadly, both scenarios were in play.

It wasn’t just about my returning to the pack now. It was also about admitting that I’d kept his
son, his heir, away from him, and that I was not only a lowly Omega, but also part of a race
that was isolated and eliminated. When he’d answered my question about the choosing
ceremony, a tiny part of me had felt relief. That relief had quickly turned to embarrassment
after I’d admitted there was no one else.
I hadn’t even been able to act like I had moved on from him and gotten involved with
someone else, if only to see his reaction. Mara’s voice suddenly tore through my thoughts.
“Sienna!” I started, turning to meet her eyes. She looked like she had been calling me for a
while, a deep frown on her face. “Something bothering you?” She asked.
I shrugged, pulling a weed from the base of a tomato plant. “Just thinking.”
She quickly moved her attention to Elias to ensure he wasn’t listening in. “About the note?”
It was an easy escape so I immediately took it. I felt a sliver of guilt when I realized I’d almost
forgotten about the note for a second. We were all in danger–most probably because of me-
and here I was too caught up in my thoughts of Logan to actually come up with a way out of
the situation. I pulled the weed a little forcefully, the memory of the scrawled words
immediately sobering me up. “I can only hope whoever it is, isn’t watching our every move.”
Mara sat back on her heels, wiping her hands on the king skirt she was putting on. “I know
this might sound like I’m asking you to cower and run, but maybe it’s time to consider leaving
the pack,” I snapped my head to her. “Not permanently,” She quickly clarified. “But just enough
to get whoever’s keeping an eye on you off of your trail.” I opened my mouth, but no words
came out.
I couldn’t ask the questions I wanted to, because I already knew the answers to them. Yes,
Mara would be safe, because she wasn’t the target. And as for where I would go too… Logan’s
apology immediately came to mind. I looked at her, her words both terrifying and tempting.
“He did apologize the last time he was here,” I admitted.
She nodded. “That’s better,” Her head tilted to the side. “The man really wants you back in the

pack with him.
I hesitated. “I’m going to tell him. About Elias. I’m going to tell him soon. I’m just trying to
gather the courage for the aftermath.”
There was a concerned expression on her face. “You think he’ll understand?”
I shrugged my shoulders with a casualness I didn’t feel. “I don’t know. But he deserves to
know. And Elias deserves to know his father.”

That night, sleep came in fits. I tossed and turned, unable to get my mind clear enough to fall asleep. When I finally drifted off, the dream I had was strangely vivid. Logan stood in a field, the moonlight casting a silver glow around him. He had his back to me, but the second I laid eyes on him, he turned on his heel. He didn’t say a word, just stared at me in a way that made
me know he was calling out for me.
I stepped forward, the grass soft beneath my feet. He stretched his arm out and as I reached
for him, he faded, the field dissolving into darkness. I woke up with a start, the room silent,
and my heart pounding way too loudly in my chest. I slipped out of bed, padding to the
kitchen for a glass of water. Mara asleep on the couch. The other room where Elias had retired
for the night was closed.
I checked on him, watching his chest rise and fall. A relieved breath escaped me. He was safe.
The next morning, I recounted the dream to Mara in the shop. She listened quietly, her brow
furrowed. When I was done, she echoed the words I’d already known.
