The tension in the shop was so thick, it could be cut with a knife.

I still hadn’t informed Mara of the note I’d found in my room. I was still a little shaken. Okay,
a lot shaken. I was still a bit shaken. But I wasn’t ready to share that fear with Mara just yet.
For one, she didn’t deserve to be painted as a target. The note had been in my room. Not in
the room Mara shared occasionally with Elias. Not in the living room, or the adjoined kitchen,
or anywhere else in the cabin.
It had been in my room.
Whoever had put it there… a new wave of dread washed over me. How long had they been
keeping an eye on me? On us? My heart immediately went out to Elias, and I knew I had to
inform Mara of the note sooner than later. The second reason I was still keeping the barely
disguised threat to myself? I had an idea what Mara’s response would be. As warm as she was,
she could also be pretty…
Unbothered.
She always thought the moon goddess was in control of everything and that no harm would
ever come to her. Knowing Mara, she would be more concerned about what decision I was
going to take, than fearing for her own safety. She probably thought she would see the danger
before it happened. A dark thought clouded my mind. She hadn’t been able to see the
intruder…
I slanted a look at her. She was dutifully following some kind of handbook as she tried to
make a potion of some kind. I arranged the books in my hand onto the shelves before taking a
seat on the stool beside her. I silently watched her for a few minutes, wondering how best to
bring her up to the speed on the silent chaos that was my life.

I knew she could sense I had something to say, but she appeared to be waiting for me to let it
out on my own. “I found a note,” I said, breaking the silence. She didn’t react, but it wasn’t
because she hadn’t heard me. I continued, wanting to let it out all at once. No use holding
back now. “On my nightstand. It said, ‘Well, well, well. If it isn’t the cherry on top of the cake.””
There. I felt my chest loosen slightly.
Mara paused, her hands stilling. “That’s… unsettling.” She met my eyes briefly to acknowledge
what I’d shared, and then she was back to her task. She picked up some funny looking
spectacles, staring at the pages of her book with it. “I take it, it’s been a few days since you
found it?” She inquired.
I nodded, the memory of the scrawled words sending a chill down my spine. I shot her a look.
“Why aren’t you moved by that?”
She met my eyes, and I was surprised to see the ghost of a smile playing around her lips. “I
have a feeling you’re moved enough for the both of us,” her voice turned serious. “I don’t know
if I’ll see visions of the intruder, or get an understanding of what he wants, but I’m going to
fortify the house the minute we arrived back home.” I nodded at words, knowing it made
sense.
I pushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “Also… Logan showed up at the cabin.
Unannounced, and demanding to see me.” At my words, Mara looked up in genuine surprise. I
wondered how Logan’s showing up had gotten more of a reaction out of her than knowing
someone had snuck into the cabin. Knowing I would never be able to figure it out no matter
how hard I tried, I simply pushed it to the back of my mind.
She turned to face me, concern etched into her features. It surprised me how much I was
pleased by her concerned expression. She might have felt it, but it was the first time she was
really showing concern for me, and how the situation with Logan affected me. “What did he
want?”
I sighed, leaning against the counter. “In summary? He wanted to let me know he was going to
take me back to the pack, whether I like it or not.”

Mara’s eyes narrowed. “That’s not his decision to make.”
A wave of relief washed over me. She really was finally understanding things from my
perspective, and still… I looked down, tracing patterns on the countertop. “I don’t know what
to do. A part of me…” I let out a shaky breath, forcing myself to get the words out. “A part of
me still feels something for him.” At Mara’s head raise, I quickly continued. “Stupid, I know.
He’s done nothing but be a complete jerk since the day that I met him…” I trailed off, staring
blankly at a spot as I tried to sort out my feelings.

I could count the number of times he’d actually treated me right, but somehow over the last
almost six years while I’d been trying to forget him, I’d ended up bonding myself even more to the memories of him. And then there was Elias who was quite frankly the most beautiful reminder of him. Mara stepped forward and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“Feelings are definitely complicated,” she soothed. “And with the mate bond, there was only so
much you could to forget him,”
She was right, of course. I just couldn’t help feeling like the most conflicted and indecisive
person to ever exist. We settled into a comfortable silence for a while. I fiddled with the hem
of my skirt, voicing the question dancing in the forefront of my mind. “How do I tell him
about my bloodline?” I asked quietly.
Mara slanted a look at me, giving me a reassuring smile. “You know him better than I do,” she
responded vaguely. “Something tells me you’re better off figuring that out on your own.” Great.
Now, she left me to make the decisions. She put down the funny-looking goggles and closed
the book in front of her, throwing a glance at the clock. “I need to pick up Elias. Will you be
okay here?”
I nodded. “I’ll be fine.”
After she left, I tried to focus on organizing the shop, but my thoughts kept drifting. The door
creaked open minutes later, and I turned, my eyes immediately going wide. Elias was cradled
in Mara’s arms, a small bandage on his forehead. “What happened?” I rushed over, an
overwhelming panic immediately gripping me.

“He tripped while playing,” Mara explained gently. “Just a minor scrape.”
I examined the bandage, guilt and fear knotting in my stomach. “Are you sure he’s okay?”
Mara nodded. “He’s a tough little wolf. He’ll be fine.”
I took Elias from her, fretting over him. When he assured me he was okay, I kissed his head
and let him settle somewhere in a corner of the shop to do his homework. The injury really
wasn’t more than a scrape, but still, my unease lingered. “What if it wasn’t just a trip?” I
whispered to Mara. “What if someone was watching him?”
There was a mildly warning expression on her face. “Sienna, accidents happen. But if it will
ease your mind, we can increase security around the cabin, get some things in place.” I
nodded, the tension in my shoulders easing slightly. As I tucked Elias into bed that night, his
peaceful expression stirred a fierce protectiveness within me.
I knew I had to reach a conclusion soon.

Logan had rolled the ball in my court.
It was up to me to decide.
