I headed out to the garden on my own.
It was the third day and I needed the time to sort out my thoughts before Logan showed up. I
crouched to the ground, picking up the weeding from where Mara and I had left off. I tried to
lose myself in the mundane task, but all I kept seeing was Logan’s face, tight with rage, his
eyes brimming with betrayal as he’d stared me down in the clearing.
His threat rang over and over in my head. He’d meant it, and I didn’t know if that was what
scared me most, how angry he’d been… or how deeply he might truly want a chance to be a
father. I had returned to the cabin completely shaken up from my encounter with him.
Thankfully, Mara had kept Elias away from me until I’d put myself together enough to speak
to him.
And even then, I hadn’t come forward with the truth.
I’d smiled, cooked up a story, hugged him, and even made his favorite soup, all while feeling
like I was unraveling inside. Mara had stayed quiet that first night, letting me cry in my room
until I had no tears left. She hadn’t said much when she slipped in to check up on me, just
held my hand when I whispered I didn’t know what to do. Because honestly, I didn’t. I was
terrified of losing my son… and maybe just as terrified of losing Logan.
I wiped the tear that had rolled down my cheek when I noticed Mara and Elias making their
way to the garden. Mara let go of his hand and joined me with the weeding, and I watched as
he immediately darted around the garden, chasing a beetle with far too much enthusiasm for
how I was feeling inside. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, the guilt pressing down on my chest
like a boulder.
Mara noticed me staring and nudged me lightly with her elbow. “You need to tell him, Sienna,”
she said, drawing my attention to her. “It’s better if it comes from you.” She clarified. I

exhaled deeply, my eyes stinging as I followed Elias’s movements, realizing she was right as
always. I needed to tell him before Logan showed up.
She tipped her head toward Elias. “Go,” she said, giving me another nudge. I murmured a
thank you, pulling myself up from my crouch. I peeled my gloves oddly, dusting my dress with
shaking hands, as I called, “Elias, sweetheart, come here.” He turned at the sound of my voice,
his face flushed with sunlight and sweat. “Can we talk for a sec?” I asked softly. He
immediately dusted his clothes, running to take my hand.
1 led him to the front porch, the bench creaking slightly as we sat. “There’s something I want
to tell you,” I began, ignoring the way my throat tightened and smoothing his hair down with
my fingers. “Something I should’ve told you a long time ago.” He blinked up at me, confused
but curious. Pain stabbed my chest at the completely trusting expression on his face.
“What is it, Mom?” he asked. That innocence in his voice cracked something open in me. How
could I have kept something so important from someone who looked at me like that? My heart
pounded as I searched for the right words, none of which felt nearly enough. I swallowed hard,
bracing myself for his reaction.
“Elias… you… you have a father. And he’s not dead or gone or anything else you might
believe,” I confessed quietly, watching his little face shift from confusion to stillness. “His
name is Logan.” I carried on, my voice trembling. “The man you saw me talking to the other
day… he’s your father. He’s back now and he wants to be a part of our lives.”
He was still for a minute and then his eyes dimmed as realization dawned on him. “Why was
he away for so long?” he asked quietly. I wiped away a tear, explaining that his father had hurt
me in the past, and I believed he wouldn’t care about us, but I was wrong.
“I was wrong sweetheart, and I’m so sorry. He’s missed so much-your first steps, your first
words.” I smiled sadly at him through the tears stinging my eyes. “He even cried when he
realized it too. Realized how much he’s missed.” Elias listened intently, his small hand
reaching for mine. He asked innocent questions, each one ripping my heart open a little more.
I answered them all, striving to be honest yet gentle. When he had finally satisfied his

curiosity, whispering that he had forgiven me, I hugged him tightly to myself.
Dear goddess, I loved him.
“I have a secret to share,” I whispered. I managed a small smile at him when he pulled away.
“But you have to promise me something,”
“What?” he asked.
“Your father doesn’t know about our powers yet and I need you to keep it that way until I’m
ready to tell him,” I quickly cut in when he was going to ask why. “I have to be the one to tell him, honey,” I said gently, taking his hands in mine and smoothing my thumb over the back of
his palms. “You know we have to keep our abilities hidden from the wrong people. We can’t
risk anyone finding out when they’re not supposed to,” I finished.
He nodded solemnly. “I promise mom,” He responded, causing me to lay a gentle kiss on his
head.
“Good boy. And now for the secret, “I smiled, revealing the final piece of news I had for him.
“Your father is a king.”
I held my breath. Counted to three. I had barely made it to three when his face lit up with
excitement. “Really? That’s so cool!” he exclaimed.
I laughed at his excitement. “Your father wants us to return to the pack with him, but you
don’t have to decide what you want now,” I informed him. “You can take your time.”
Just then, a shadow fell across the porch. I looked up, my heart pounding as I saw Logan
standing there, staring at me with a hard expression on his face. Quickly, I stood, holding
Elias’s hand tightly. Elias looked between us, asking softly, “Is he my father?”
Meeting Logan’s gaze, I nodded.
“Yes, he is.”
