It all happened rather quickly.
One second I was fast asleep, the next, the scent of smoke was invading my senses. I felt the
warmth of the room heighten to a degree that was too suspicious for me to not be concerned.
My eyes fluttered open to a haze of yellow and red, an acrid smell burning my nostrils. Panic
surged as I realized this wasn’t a nightmare. This wasn’t my imagination. The house was
actually on fire.
My entire life flashed before my eyes.
“Elias!” I screamed, bolting upright, my heart pounding against my ribcage as it threatened to
burst out of my chest. My room door was open, and I had a clear view of the flames dancing
along the edges of the room. I stumbled out of bed, quickly navigating through the thickening
smoke, coughing as it clawed at my throat. “Elias!” I called again, desperation lacing my voice.
No answer. “Elias!” I yelled, completely terrified now. A faint, terrified whimper answered from
Mara’s room. Quickly, I pushed through the heat, my skin prickling as I made my way across
the living room to Mara’s room.
I found him curled up on the bed, his eyes wide with fear. “Mommy!” he cried, reaching out.
The fire was peeling my skin, but I couldn’t care less. The only thing that mattered was
getting Elias out of the house before he got seriously hurt. I scooped him into my arms,
shielding his face against my shoulder. The fire roared louder, as though it could sense we
were about to make an escape.
Reminding myself I could use my powers to control the situation, I summoned a small barrier
of water from the vases lined up in the room, causing the flowers to instantly dry up and get
burnt in the fire. I doused the flames nearest to us with the fire, still shielding Elias’s face
with my shoulder. Navigating through the smoldering debris, I kicked open the front door, the

cool air rushing in and wrapping around us like a soothing blanket.
I stumbled out of the cabin with Elias, collapsing onto the grass, coughing and gasping for air.
He clung to me, his sobs reaching my ears. My shoulder lightly sting from where his tears
made contact with the bruises around the area, but my attention was on soothing him. My
arms bore burns, my legs scraped and bleeding, but at least we were alive. Thank the goddess
we were alive.
As I cradled Elias, inspecting the minor burns on his skin and soot-covered face, a familiar
voice pierced through the air. “Sienna!” Mara was at my side so quickly, I wondered if she had
just materialized. Her eyes were wide with horror as she took in the scene, dropping to her
knees beside us. “Oh gods, what happened?” Her hands hovered, unsure where to touch. I
turned to meet her panicked gaze.
“I woke up and the cabin was on fire,” I rasped, my voice hoarse. I knew she would pick up on
the words I didn’t want to say in front of Elias. That someone had set the cabin on fire. “We
were asleep… I barely got us out.” Her face paled, her jaw tightening. She stared at the cabin,
quickly dousing the fire with just her eyes and a motion of her hands.
She went into the cabin and by the time she returned with a balm in her hand, the concern in
her eyes had doubled. “You need to tend to your wounds,” she insisted, gently taking Elias
from my arms. “Let me care for him while you see to yourself.” I hesitated, torn between my
injuries and my son’s well-being. Realizing the pain in my arms was becoming unbearable, I
nodded and allowed Mara to take Elias, watching as she soothed him with soft words.
I turned to assess the damage; the once-cozy cabin now a charred skeleton. A shiver ran down
my spine at the realization that someone had just tried to kill us. Someone wanted Elias and I
dead. I forced back my shudder, gently applying the balm to my burns, in the way Mara was
doing to Elias. Seconds later, his small voice pierced the silence that had settled over us.
“Mom, what caused the fire?” he asked, his eyes still wide with confusion and fear.
I opened my mouth to respond, but the words caught in my throat. How was I supposed to
respond to that? Mara, sensing my struggle, stepped in smoothly. ‘It seems there was an

accident, sweetheart,” she said, her voice calm and soothing. “But your mom acted quickly and
kept you safe. Like a true hero. Elias shifted his eyes to mine and gave me a small grateful
smile at being his hero.
Once his wounds were tended to, I suggested he sit on the bench outside the cabin, asking
him to stay close while Mara and I assessed the damage inside. He complied without protest,
and I couldn’t help but admire how strong he was. Just like his father. Mara and I walked into
the house, moving through the charred remains, and trying to salvage what little we could. I
paused, picking up the bracelet Logan had given me, miraculously unscathed amidst the
destruction.
I hadn’t even realized it had fallen off of my wrist. Holding it tightly, I turned to Mara. “At
least this survived,” I said without humor, the weight of the situation pressing down on me.
Tears stung my eyes when she managed a small smile at my word. “I’m so sorry,” I sobbed,
unable to stop the tears from escaping. She was immediately at my side, trying to hush me.
“I’m so, so sorry. None of this would have happened if you had never taken me in. Or if I’d
stopped being stubborn and moved ou-”
“Stop it, Sienna.” She firmly scolded, hugging me to herself and rubbing my arms as though I
was a child all over again. “None of this is your fault,” She said, kissing the top of my head.
“But that doesn’t change the fact that someone tried to kill you and Elias.” She pulled back,
staring at me with concern as she wiped the tears from my face. “You can’t stay here any
longer, She stated softly. “It’s not safe.” I nodded, the truth of her words sinking in.
“Logan is supposed to visit today. I’ll talk to him when he arrives.” I promised.
I had stalled for too long, and now it was time I took matters into my own hands. Whoever
had done this, had messed with the wrong wolf. They were welcome to come after me, but one
thing they would soon realize;
I would do whatever it took to keep Elias safe.
