Logan
Something wasn’t right.
The more I approached the cabin, the more unease settled over me. It didn’t take me long to
figure out what was out of place the second I set my eyes on the cabin. The structure, once a
symbol of warmth and safety, now bore the scars of what was no other than a very recent fire.
I headed for the cabin with a sense of urgency, running my gaze over the charred wood and
soot-streaked walls. My heart pounded inside my rib cage, dread coiling in my gut.
This was more than just any fire. Whatever had caused this much damage had been
intentional. The hairs on the back of my neck stood as I knocked on the newly installed door.
The wood was of low quality, and the installation had been poorly done; a sign that it had
been more about quickly replacing the old door than it had been about giving the cabin an
upgrade. I only had to wait a few seconds before the door was pulled open.
The sight of Sienna stopped me cold. Though her wounds were healing, the remnants of
bruises and burns marred her skin. Her eyes, usually so full of fire, had a weariness that made
my heart ache. “What happened?” I asked, taking a step forward, my voice barely above a whisper. She ushered me inside and recounted the events that had occurred in my absence. I scanned my gaze around the room, the extent of the damage letting me know how dire the
situation had been.
There was a detached calmness in her voice as she described how the fire had engulfed the cabin while they slept. She had been able to get Elias and her out of the fire, but the danger had been real and close. I felt a surge of anger and fear; someone had tried to harm them on purpose. Someone had made an attempt on their lives. I frowned, rubbing my hands down her arms as I searched her gaze. “Are you both okay now?” I pressed.
She nodded, explaining that Mara had taken Elias to the market for supplies. I pressed my lips

together, making sure to keep my voice gentle as I spoke. “I think it’s time you both returned
to the pack, Sienna. It’s not safe here any longer.”
A part of me expected her to disagree, and I was pleased when she didn’t. She looked away,
her expression conflicted. “I know,” she admitted softly. Her eyes came back to mine. “But
please, let me talk to Elias first. He needs a day or two at least to come to terms with it,
before we leave. He also needs time to say goodbye to his friends at the academy. And to
Mara…”
I ran my hand down my face, hating that I understood what she was trying to say. A huge
change such as this one could negatively affect him if we didn’t manage it carefully.
Reluctantly, I agreed, understanding the importance of closure for our son. Just then, I picked
up on the sound of footsteps. Sienna walked to the door to let Elias and Mara in, both carrying
bags filled with supplies; his, not as big as hers.
Elias’s face lit up the moment he laid his eyes on me, and he quickly dropped the bags before
running into my arms. I felt a surge of pride. Despite the very recent trauma, his spirit had
clearly remained unbroken. He clung to me, his small arms wrapped tightly around my neck.
The feel of holding him in my arms, knowing he was alright-caused the tension in my
shoulders to loosen slightly.
I met Mara’s gaze over his shoulder, offering a nod in greeting. My attention went back to my
son. “Are you okay, champ?” I asked, pulling back slightly to look into his eyes. He nodded
enthusiastically, his eyes shining.
“I’m okay,” He replied, craning his head to look at Sienna. “Mom was my hero. She saved me
from the fire.”
I turned to Sienna, our eyes locking. “She did, didn’t she?”
My attention moved to Mara, concern etched on my face. “And you? How are you holding up?
Considering…” I let my gaze meaningfully scan the room before coming back to hers.

She waved off my concern with a dismissive movement of her hand. I was beginning to realize
she rarely got bothered about anything. “It’s just a cabin, Logan,” She stated calmly. I’m just
glad nothing happened to Sienna and Elias.” As Sienna and Elias began taking the supplies
inside, Mara and I wordlessly headed out to the front porch. I turned to her, a deep sincerity
and gratitude in my expression.
“Thanks for looking after them all this while,” I said, a hint of gratitude in my voice as I
scratched the back of my neck. “I’m honored at how much you’ve single handedly shouldered
my responsibilities for this long, and I’m more than pleased to take it from here.”
Mara offered a small smile, her eyes reflecting a mix of sadness and happiness. “I’m happy
your family is finally coming back together, Logan.” she said softly. She sighed, her gaze
drifting towards the cabin. “I think you have to give Sienna a day or two to break the news to
Elias. He needs time to come to terms with it.” I nodded. It was almost the exact thing Sienna
had said.
“Sienna thought as much,” I replied.
I ran my gaze over the cabin for the umpteenth time. “My warriors would be over to help
rebuild your home,” I informed her. She began to protest, but I raised a hand to stop her.
“Please, let me do this. It’s the least I can do after all you’ve done.” She looked at me,
gratitude shining in her eyes.
“Thank you, Logan,” she said sincerely.
As Sienna stepped back out, Mara took the rest of the supplies and walked inside, leaving us
alone. Sienna stood on her tiptoes, pressing a gentle kiss to my lips. “Thank you,” she
whispered, having caught the last part of our conversation. I kissed her back, my hand resting
on her waist. “You don’t have to thank me for anything, I murmured, unable to stop myself
from kissing her again. I forced myself to pull away from her. “I’ll be back in three days to take
you both home.”
She gave me a small nod in return at my words.

As I walked away, a peaceful and hopeful feeling settled in my chest.
Hell, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been this happy.
