It was finally the last day before Elias and I had to move to Logan’s pack.
It somehow felt like the past two days had dragged on for forever, and had still been the
fastest two days ever. The cabin was almost entirely silent, save for the quiet rustle of my
packing. Mara and Elias moved in and out of my room, carrying clothes and other things I needed to pack into the bags as well. I took my time folding each piece of clothing, my hands
trembling slightly.
The gravity of our impending departure danced right in front of me, with each box that I
unzipped and stuffed with our belongings. As I sorted out the items scattered across my bed,
my eyes caught the delicate silver necklace I’d picked out for Mara at the market-a simple
band engraved with a small wolf paw. I slipped it under my pillow, deciding to wait until the
time felt right before giving it to her.
Mara and Elias entered the room again, this time holding hands. “We’ve brought everything to
your room,” Mara said softly, her voice tinged with emotion.
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Okay, I managed to reply.
She glanced at Elias, then back at me. “Would it be alright if I walked Elias to the academy to
say goodbye to his teacher and friends?” Her voice was just a little bit shaky, but it was still more than I’d ever heard it. Understanding her need for some time alone with him, I smiled
and said, “Of course.”
I followed them out to the porch, waving at Elias when he turned to look back at me. I stepped
back inside the cabin and closed the door with a soft click, leaning against it as tears streamed
down my face. The realization of how much I would miss Mara hit me with full force. She had
been everything I could have ever needed. The thought of leaving her behind was almost
unbearable.

I wiped my cheeks, taking a deep breath to steady myself. I had to carry on with packing or
they would know I had broken down after they had left. Returning to my room, I picked up
from where I’d left off. My thoughts drifted to a conversation with Mara the day before when
she’d mentioned waiting until Elias and I were gone before Logan’s warriors began rebuilding
her cabin.
I had casually mentioned the idea of her moving with us, well aware Logan would welcome
her. She had smiled wistfully, going silent for a moment before letting me know she would
give me an answer if I ever asked again. I hadn’t pressed, sensing she needed some time to
consider my offer. Now, as I folded the last of our belongings, I couldn’t help but hope she
would change her mind. I already felt empty, and I wasn’t the one who would be living alone
in the cabin.
I’d become so used to her presence that the thought of facing the future without her by my
side was honestly a little… scary. Still, I knew I had to respect her decision. I rounded up my
packing before making my way into the bathroom, completely exhausted. I took my time
having a thorough shower, and by the time I stepped out, I felt a little better. I was barely
done putting on my clothes when a knock sounded on the front door.
Quickly pulling on sweat pants and a tank top, I stepped out of my room to let them in. I
noted that Mara looked a little happier than when they’d been leaving. Elias walked into my
room with me as he recounted his farewells at the academy. There was a terse silence after he
was done. He stared at me, his eyes suspiciously bright. “I’m going to miss Mara, mommy,” He
said with a small voice.
I pulled him into a tight embrace, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “I’m going to miss her too, 1 whispered. “You know what?” I said, pulling back to look into his eyes. “If you’re up for it, why
don’t we take one final tour around the pack?”
His face lit up, and with a gleeful expression. “Yay!”, he exclaimed, darting off to inform Mara.
Already knowing she wouldn’t turn him down, I quickly changed into something more
appropriate.

Chapter 64
Minutes later, we were at the heart of the pack. Mara held Elias’s hand as we made our way
through the familiar paths, basking in the memories we had made. Our last stop was Mara’s
shop, a place that had begun to feel like a second home. We all had tears in our eyes by the
time we were leaving; knowing it would be a while before Elias and I were here again.
We made a stop at the clearing on our way back home. We lingered there the longest, for
obvious reasons. I turned, hiding the tear that fell at the reminder that this was where Elias
had learned to walk, and run, and climb, and defend himself, and get a hang of his abilities. I
waited until Mara gently pulled Elias along, before we began moving again.
Back at the cabin, Mara surprised us with a small, beautifully wrapped package. Inside were
two delicate pendants-ones I knew were a symbol of protection. Elias and I both thanked her,
completely overwhelmed by her kindness. It was at that moment I excused myself to retrieve
the gift I’d gotten her. Seeing the surprise and joy on Mara’s face made my heart ache and
swell at once.
She lifted her head, her eyes met mine and the sparkle of unshed tears caused me to stumble
into her arms. The tears we’d been holding for so long freely fell now as we hugged each other
tightly. “I’m going to miss you so much,” I whispered, my voice cracking. She pressed a gentle
kiss to my head, replying softly, “I’m going to miss you too.”
Elias, standing shyly beside us, had tears in his own eyes. I motioned him into the embrace.
“Aww, you crybabies,” Mara joked light-heartedly, breaking the heaviness and making us all
laugh through our tears. As our laughter faded, a warm calm settled over me. At some point in
our journey, she had become the mother I never had.
I sighed contentedly, realizing I was more than ready.
I was finally ready to enter the next chapter of our lives.
