I tried to concentrate on helping Maurie set up the dinner table but Logan’s words kept ringing in my
head.
He’d been to the shack countless times just to get a whiff of my scent. It sounded so absurd and yet, a part
of me knew he was telling the truth. He’d said it with so much… openness and honesty. The pure look of
want in his eyes had spooked me a little and like the coward I was slowly turning into these days, I’d done,
the only thing I could think of.
I’d run from him.
As I set the plates on the table, I couldn’t help but wonder if I wasn’t much like the wolf he’d referred to as spineless. I hadn’t even stayed in the room long enough to seek his permission to work on the shack in the lower village. I’d been too afraid of revealing how I truly felt about him. Afraid of being hurt and rejected and turned away all over again. If he hadn’t shown interest in having me back at the pack-when he hadn’t yet known of Elias’s existence-I knew a part of me would have doubted he truly wanted me.
I pressed my lips together as I scooped portions of rice onto the bowls. I should have just kissed him. What exactly would it have taken from me? Absolutely nothing. I should have just closed the distance between us and touched my lips to his like I’d wanted to the second I’d walked into his bedroom and found him
standing in just a towel.
As though on cue, the man I was thinking about in question walked down the stairs with his son. Maurie filled the glasses with orange juice and then got to cleaning up the kitchen before saying her goodbyes and leaving the house. I no longer bothered with inviting her to sit with us. I’d quickly learned it was
something she didn’t want to do, and not for any negative reason.
I avoided Logan’s gaze, pulling out a seat for Elias and pushing him closer to the table after he’d lowered himself on it. We began eating in a terse silence and I almost let out a relieved sigh when Elias began his usual chatter, immediately causing the awkwardness to disappear. Logan and I took turns replying to his questions and asking ours. We had gone almost halfway with dinner when one of the warriors guarding the
building stepped in.
Sighting him, Logan pushed his seat back and excused himself. I drew my eyebrows together as I watched them talk in hushed tones from the living room, my heart steadily picking up in my chest. Had something

happened? I tried to read the look in Logan’s face but he must have known my eyes were on him because
he gave nothing away.
I carried on with my meal, asking Elias about the friends he was making at the academy in an effort to distract him from the warriors presence. He’d lost touch with controlling his powers ever since we’d begun staying in the pack, and I knew that was partly because we no longer had the time to train and practice. The reminder of the secret I was keeping from Logan caused a bitter feeling to settle in my mouth.
I had to tell him the truth soon.
From a corner of my eyes I noticed Logan nodding at the warrior and shaking his hand before he began making his way back to the table. He didn’t sit down. He stood by my side, waiting for me to meet his eyes before saying so lowly I barely caught his words, “The warriors discovered unusual activity at the pack
borders,”
I immediately tensed.
I dragged my gaze to Elias, thankful when I found him intently trying to separate the vegetables in his food. Unusual activity? I thought as I brought my gaze back to Logan’s. Did that mean we were under attack? I’d known whoever had set Mara’s cabin on fire would eventually realize Elias and I had moved and would come looking for us. Apparently, that did nothing to help with feeling unsafe.
Logan placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, equally slanting a look at Elias. “You don’t have to worry about it,” He assured me. “I have warriors circling the mansion until I get back. You just stay with Elias, I’ll try to be back as fast as I can.” I swallowed, giving him a mod in response. He bent over his plate and hurriedly finished with his meal, before ruffling Elias’s hair and letting him know he had something to take
care of and he would be back as soon as possible.
“Can I come with you?” Elias asked harmlessly. Logan’s reply was immediate.
“Sorry bud, you can’t,” he responded, shaking his head as though he was sad about the fact. “I’ll make it up to you,” he promised, patting Elias’s shoulder and then coming to my side. “I’ll see you in a minute” he
whispered, kissing the side of my head.
“Logan, I called when he was a few steps away from me. “Be safe,” I mouthed to him, so Elias wouldn’t hear. He gave me a nod and in the next second, he was walking out of the house. I turned to Elias, just in time to see him putting the last bit of food in his mouth. I finished up mine as well before pushing my seat with the back of my legs and standing to my feet. “C’mon,” I said to him. “Let’s get this cleaned up.”

I stacked the plates and headed to the kitchen to do the dishes before returning to clean the surface of the dining table. When I realized Logan might take a while before getting back, I took Elias by the hand and let him know he would see his father in the morning. Luckily, he was tired and didn’t question it. Needing the time to go by fast and for me to be distracted by Logan’s absence, I started a shower for him. After he was done having a bath and had dressed in his PJs, I got him under the covers and adjusted his duvet.
I pulled a chair beside his bed and got to telling him bedtime stories until he fell asleep.
And still, Logan wasn’t back yet.
