AVA’S POINT OF VIEW
“Your place?” I asked.
Lucian merely lifted an eyebrow.
That was it.

I waited for him to elaborate, but his eyes returned to the road as though my question had never been
asked.
I knew he was an Alpha-the Alpha of Blackwood Pack, a pack I wasn’t even sure was anywhere near
here-but that only made his silence more confusing.
“Or your pack?” I tried.
He shook his head once.
I frowned, studying him from the corner of my eye.
There was something unnervingly composed about him. He didn’t fidget or glance at me unnecessarily. He simply drove, one hand resting steadily on the wheel, his attention fixed ahead.
He didn’t strike me as the type of man who would take advantage of a woman just because he had the
power to.
So, I settled back into my seat.
“So where is your place?” I asked again.
Nothing.
I bit the inside of my cheek.
Seriously?
I turned toward him.
“Please, can you at least give me a response when I ask you something?”
His fingers shifted slightly against the steering wheel before he finally glanced at me.
“Pardon me.”
His voice was calm, almost painfully so.

stay at Crescent Pack Hotel.
My brows rose.
“Then where-”
“You’ll be given a different room.”
The words came so naturally that I almost forgot what I had been about to ask.
“Oh.”

I sank farther into the seat, letting my head rest against it. For a moment, I closed my eyes.
A hotel.
Why was an Alpha staying in a hotel?
Wasn’t he supposed to be with his pack?
Or was he here because of pack business?
My eyes opened again.
“What exactly are you doing here?”
Lucian pulled the car over.
I looked at him.
“Are you here for pack business?”
He leaned back against the seat, completely unhurried. There was no impatience in his expression, no indication that my questions bothered him.
“You can say that.”
I raised a brow.
That wasn’t exactly an answer.
But apparently, that was all I was getting.
I opened my mouth to question him again.
“Wait.”
Before I could ask what he meant, he stepped out of the car. I watched him walk around the front, and

mements later, my door opened.
He extended a hand toward me.
I stared at it for a second, then looked up at him. A small laugh nearly escaped me.
Such a gentleman.

I slipped my hand into his, and he helped me out before quietly closing the door behind me.
We started toward the hotel.
From a distance, anyone watching us might have assumed we were something more than we were. The thought almost made me laugh.
There was nothing between us.
Still, when I glanced at him, I caught his side profile beneath the soft moon lights.
He was annoyingly handsome.
I quickly looked away.
Why was I even noticing?
“So…” I broke the silence. “Do you have a mate?”
Lucian stopped.
I turned toward him.
He looked at me for a moment before answering in the same composed tone.
“I don’t.”
I pressed my lips together.
“Oh.”
For some reason, I found myself smiling.
I quickly wiped it away and continued walking.
Maybe it was because of how different he was from Logan.
The thought of Logan alone was enough to sour the warmth in my chest.
My stomach twisted.

My mate.
The word itself had once meant something beautiful to me.

Now, whenever Logan’s name entered my mind, all I could remember was the lies from his mouth, the things he would have done with Celine, and the way I’d once been foolish enough to believe he would
never hurt me.
Disgust crawled up my throat.
I pushed the thought away.
I wasn’t going to let Logan ruin my mood.
We entered the hotel, and I immediately noticed the number of Alphas moving through the lobby.
Conversations were kept low, faces were guarded, and everyone seemed to know exactly where they
were going.
Lucian didn’t slow down.
I followed him toward the elevator, and when the doors opened, he placed a hand lightly behind my
back, guiding me inside before stepping in after me.
I blinked.
Wow. He really had manners.
The elevator doors closed, leaving us alone inside. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke, and the quiet stretched between us until curiosity finally got the better of me.
“What’s your relationship with Alpha Kion?”
Lucian’s gaze remained fixed ahead.
“You said Alpha Kion made a bad remark about your mate?”
I nodded. “Yes. Any business relationship with his pack isn’t possible anymore.
He gave a small nod, his expression remaining unreadable.
Nothing else.
I stared at him for a moment.
He hadn’t answered my question.
Of course he hadn’t.

I was beginning to suspect Lucian had mastered the art of saying exactly enough to end a conversation without actually giving anything away.
The elevator chimed.
The doors opened.
We stepped out.
Lucian reached into his pocket and handed me a black card.
I looked down at it.
“What’s this?”
“Your room card.”
I looked back at him.
He was already moving, his hands slipping into his pockets as though there was nothing more to
discuss.
How was this man always so prepared?
“Thank you,” I said softly.
He simply nodded.
I started walking, and he followed behind me.
A few steps later, I noticed him stop. A hotel worker approached and handed him another card. Neither
of them exchanged a word.
Lucian accepted it with a quiet nod before continuing down the hallway.
He stopped in front of a door and held the card against the reader.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
I stood there for a moment, staring.
Lucian looked at me.
He said nothing.
He didn’t have to.

The slight tilt of his head made it clear he was waiting for me to enter first.
I glanced down at the black card in my hand, then back at him.
Why was he like this?
So quiet.
So controlled.
And somehow, the less he said, the more questions he left behind.
I pressed the card against the reader.
The door unlocked.
I stepped inside, then turned back toward him.
“Goodnight, Alpha Lucian.”
He gave me a small nod.
I closed the door.
The moment it clicked shut, I leaned against it and exhaled.
My heart was beating faster than it should have been.
I frowned at myself.
What was wrong with me?
A quiet laugh echoed inside my head.
Karla had finally decided to speak after being silent throughout the entire drive.
Gosh.
I rolled my eyes.
What?
There was a pause.
Then her amusement practically bounced through our bond.
He is such a mysterious man.

sighed.
She wasn’t wrong.
Now I’m curious.
