Chapter 2

AVA’S POINT OF VIEW

To be honest, I was stunned.

If Nyx hadn’t brought it up just now, I would’ve forgotten that ridiculous excuse I’d made four years

ago.

“It has nothing to do with me,” I said through clenched teeth. “Logan is the one with another mate and

a pup outside.”

The words tasted like poison.

Before Nyx could respond, the door swung open. I immediately ended the call and slipped my phone

beneath the blanket.

“You finally woke up.”

Logan walked in, dressed in a black coat that caught my attention almost instantly.

It wasn’t one I’d bought.

It wasn’t even something I would’ve chosen.

For years, I’d picked nearly every suit, every tie, every watch he wore. I knew his wardrobe better than I knew my own. This coat was expensive, elegant… and completely unlike my taste.

Someone else had dressed him.

The realization settled in my chest like a stone.

As he approached my bed, concern softened his features, his deep eyes carrying just enough worry to

fool anyone watching.

Anyone except me.

If I hadn’t already seen the truth, I probably would’ve believed him too.

“Ava,” he said softly. “Guess who came to visit you?”

Ava.

The sound of my name lingered in the air, sharp enough to make something inside me crack.

No baby.

Ava.

My chest tightened as the truth settled over me with cruel clarity. I couldn’t remember the last time

he’d called me anything else.

Just my name.

Cold. Distant. Detached.

Yet somehow, those endearments came so easily when he spoke to another woman.

Darling.

The word he had never once given me rolled effortlessly off his tongue for someone else.

“Celine… Naya, come in.”

The two stepped inside.

Celine held the little girl’s hand as they walked toward my bed.

She wore a long cream-colored dress that practically screamed luxury. Delicate embroidery shimmered beneath the lights, the fabric flowing effortlessly around her figure. My gaze drifted to Naya, whose tiny designer shoes probably cost more than what an average wolf earned in months

Expensive.

Far too expensive.

If I still believed Celine was only Logan’s adopted sister, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about

But now…

Now every little detail felt painfully obvious.

Celine’s monthly income couldn’t afford clothes like those.

Which only left one explanation.

Logan.

“Hi, Luna Naya smiled brightly, lifting a small basket toward me. “I brought peaches for you.”

Every muscle in my body stiffened.

Peaches.

I was deathly allergic to peaches.

One bite…

One careless mistake…

And I’d be back fighting for my life.

“Naya is such a thoughtful child,” Logan said, pride warming his voice.

I almost laughed.

Thoughtful?

How ironic.

The man who called himself my mate didn’t even know I was deathly allergic to peaches.

He accepted the basket before carrying it to the table.

Then, to my complete disbelief, he picked up a knife and began slicing the peaches with practiced

ease.

I stared.

An Alpha…

Slicing fruit?

The knife moved effortlessly through the soft flesh as though he’d done it a hundred times before.

A bitter laugh almost escaped me.

How many times had I begged him to help me with little things like this?

Every single time, he’d brushed me off with the same excuse.

“I’m an Alpha, Ava. I wasn’t raised to do things like this.”

Yet here he was.

Perfectly skilled.

Perfectly willing.

Just…

Not for me.

Celine noticed where my eyes had settled and let out an awkward laugh.

“Oh… Alpha Logan used to prepare fruit for us all the time when we lived together.”

Us.

Such a small word.

Yet it carved another wound into my heart.

I looked away before the pain could show on my face.

Logan cleared his throat.

“By the way, Ava… while you were unconscious, I changed Celine and Naya’s pack registration to our household.”

For a heartbeat, the words refused to make sense.

I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh, to tell me I’d misunderstood.

“What?”

He shifted, avoiding my eyes.

“Ava-”

“No.”

The refusal left my lips before he could say another word.

“I don’t agree.”

The room fell deathly still.

Even the air seemed to hold its breath.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught it.

A quick wink.

Celine’s gaze flicked to Naya.

The little girl’s face instantly crumpled, and a heartbeat later, loud, pitiful sobs burst from her lips, shattering the silence.

“Luna doesn’t want me…” she cried.

Celine immediately lowered her head, her shoulders trembling just enough to appear heartbroken.

“Can’t Naya attend the best academy?” she whispered, her voice cracking. “She doesn’t even have a father… and now…” She sniffled. “Now even Luna doesn’t want her.”

Logan was beside the little girl in seconds, lifting her into his arms as though she’d shatter if he didn’t.

“Naya… don’t cry.”

He gently wiped away her tears before turning those cold, accusing eyes on me.

“Avery.”

The full name.

The warning.

“I thought you’d understand. She’s only a child.” His jaw tightened. “Look at her. She’s crying because she feels unwanted. How can you bear seeing that?”

I almost laughed.

The irony was suffocating.

He was asking how I could watch a child cry….

While expecting me to ignore the fact that he’d spent years making a fool out of me.

Oh, please.

Like I didn’t already know she was your daughter.

I opened my mouth to answer, but Celine interrupted before a single word could leave my lips.

“Alpha, please.” She stepped forward, black hair cascading over one shoulder as she looked at me

with pitiful eyes. “Ava is the Luna. Please don’t argue with her because of us.”

She turned to Naya and gently nudged her.

“Naya… apologize to Luna.”

The little girl only cried harder.

Of course she did.

The performance wasn’t over yet.

I wanted every single one of them out of my room..

Out of my sight.

Out of my life.

But I swallowed every burning word threatening to escape.

Logan looked at me one last time, disappointment etched across his face-as though I’d somehow become the villain in this story.

“I’ve already completed the household transfer,” he said firmly. “Nothing will be changed. This

discussion is over.”

Without waiting for my response, he turned and walked out.

Celine followed.

Naya’s sobs echoed down the hallway until the door finally closed behind them.

Silence settled over the room once again.

Only this time, it pressed against my chest until it was hard to breathe.

A dull ache spread through my head, each heartbeat making it pound harder. My chest felt unbearably heavy, as though someone had reached inside and wrapped chains around my heart.

Who was I trying to fool?

The answer had been staring me in the face all along.

That…

That was his family.

Not me.

A warmth traced slowly down my cheek.

I didn’t realize I was crying until the tear reached my jaw.

With a shaky breath, I brushed it away, my fingers rough against my skin, as though I could erase the

Absolutely not.

I refused to waste another tear on a coward who hid behind the title of Alpha while betraying the woman fate had chosen for him.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

I called Corin.

Corin Ashford handled legal matters within the pack. He was the one preparing my unbinding

agreement before it would be submitted to the Alpha Council.

“It’ll take a few days,” he’d told me.

“I can wait.”

A few days later, while I was still recovering in the healer’s den, Nyx barged into my room carrying a

thick stack of documents.

“As expected of my best friend.” She dropped them onto my blanket with a grin. “I know exactly what

kind of condolences you want.”

Despite everything, I found myself smiling.

“They’re really doing this?”

“They are.” Nyx folded her arms. “Honestly, Logan is even more useless than I thought.”

A soft chuckle escaped me.

It felt strange.

Laughing after everything.

Nyx’s smile slowly disappeared.

“Ava… when did you become this quiet?” she asked. “Aren’t you going to make his life miserable? And don’t tell me you’re worried about losing your title as Luna. Standing beside that kind of Alpha isn’t worth it.”

I traced my fingertips across the top document.

The official seal stared back at me.

“I’ve already decided.”

I looked up.

“I’m unbinding from Logan.”

The words came out calmly.

Without hesitation.

“He can register whoever he wants under his household. I don’t care anymore.”

Nyx frowned.

“If you don’t care about him… then what do you care about?”

“The pack.”

I slowly leaned back against the pillows.

“This pack is ranked fifth in the region. Logan has spent years obsessing over becoming number one.”

A faint smile curved my lips.

“Without my father’s assistance….he’ll never get there.”

Which meant Celine would never become anything more than the woman hidden behind closed doors.

His mistress.

His secret.

Nyx stared at me for a long moment.

“Corin said getting an Alpha to agree to an unbinding won’t be easy,” she reminded me. “Even with the documents, he’ll fight it. So what’s your plan?”

I gently ran my fingers across the crisp pages.

The words blurred for a moment before coming back into focus.

“I’m going to give Alpha Logan a gift.”

Nyx blinked.

“…A gift?”

“He’s been raising another woman and her child behind your back, and you’re talking about timing?”

She wasn’t wrong.

But revenge meant nothing if it wasn’t unforgettable.

“I told you before.” My smile widened ever so slightly. “The thing Logan treasures most isn’t me.”

“It’s this pack.”

Understanding flashed across Nyx’s face.

“You want to destroy everything he’s built?”

I slowly shook my head.

“No.”

I looked out the window toward the heart of the pack.

“I’ll help his pack rise to the top.”
