Chapter 25

AVA’S POINT OF VIEW

After eating, I decided to head home. But just as I was about to leave, shanged my mind and decided

to stay a little longer.

I leaned back against the tree, letting the quiet of the night settle around me. The only thing that could have made the moment better was if I had something beautiful to watch.

Then-

BOOM!

I nearly jumped out of my skin.

My head snapped toward the sky just in time to see a burst of brilliant fireworks explode above the trees. My mouth fell open as another followed, then another, each one blooming across the darkness

before fading into tiny sparks.

I stared.

For several seconds, I couldn’t do anything else.

The Moon Goddess really was on my side tonight.

Because what were the chances?

I’d always loved fireworks. Whenever I finished hunting, I loved lingering beneath the night sky and watching the stars. Fireworks weren’t exactly something I expected to see, but whenever I did, I

couldn’t help but feel a little mesmerized by them.

And now, of all nights, they were going off right after I finished hunting.

It was almost too perfect.

I narrowed my eyes at the sky, suspicion creeping in.

“Who would have…”

I trailed off before shifting back into my human form. I quickly picked up my phone and searched for

any event happening tonight.

Nothing.

There were plenty of human celebrations listed, but none of them were anywhere near here. And there

certainly wasn’t anything that explained this ridiculous display of fireworks.

I frowned.

So who had arranged them?

And why tonight?

A thought suddenly crossed my mind.

What if they were for me?

I immediately shook my head.

That was ridiculous.

Still, the timing was suspicious enough that I decided to call Nyx.

She picked up just before the call could go to voicemail.

“Ava, I’m kind of in the middle of something,” she said. I could hear her faint, slightly hurried breathing

through the phone. “But because I love you, I decided to answer.”

I smiled.

“Nyx, do you think these fireworks could have been set off just for me?”

There was a brief silence.

“Why would they be for you?”

“I’m just saying,” I replied, glancing back at the sky as another explosion illuminated the darkness. “How else do you explain the timing? They started right after I finished hunting. It’s almost like

someone knew I’d be here.”

“Avaaa…” Nyx groaned. “I really don’t think someone would arrange an entire fireworks display just for

you.”

I sighed.

“But you’re probably right.”

I could practically hear the smile in her voice when she replied, “Not everything revolves around you.

“I know.”

“But you’re allowed to dream.”

Lsmiled at that.

“I was probably interrupting something, so…”

“Oh, yeah.”

The call ended before I could finish.

I stared at my phone for a moment before lowering it.

Karla whimpered softly inside me.

And somehow, that tiny sound reminded me of another night.

New Year’s Eve.

Logan had bought an absurd amount of fireworks that night. I remembered standing outside,

completely mesmerized as one explosion after another lit up the sky.

Wolves weren’t exactly immune to the magic of fireworks. Something about watching those bright

colors burst across the darkness made my wolf restless with excitement. Karla especially loved them.

She’d practically been wagging her tail the entire night.

Back then, everyone had teased me about it.

They’d said the fireworks were specially arranged for me.

And at the time, I’d believed them.

I had already been betrothed to Logan, and he had been so openly doting on me that almost every

female in the pack seemed to envy me.

I’d felt proud.

Special.

Happy.

Celine had been there that night too.

But now, looking back, I couldn’t help wondering if I’d simply been too naïve to see what was right in

front of me.

Maybe the fireworks had never been for me.

Maybe they had been for Celine.

Lscoffed.

Karla scoffed right along with me.

“Traitor,” I muttered under my breath.

Before I could dwell on it any longer, my phone rang again.

Nyx.

I answered immediately.

“Well, Ava, guess what?”

I raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“I just heard that a Beta arranged the fireworks for a girl.”

My eyes widened.

“A Beta?”

“Apparently.” She sounded amused. “Can you imagine? I wonder what kind of Beta would go to all that

trouble just to impress a girl.”

I almost laughed.

For one foolish second, a tiny part of me wondered if the fireworks really could have been for me.

Then reality settled in.

I felt ridiculous for even considering it.

“That’s actually really sweet,” I said, smiling despite myself. “I guess some Betas are better than some

Alphas.”

My thoughts immediately drifted to Logan.

Well…

His Beta was about as useful and lazy as Logan himself.

“I know, right?” Nyx replied. “Anyway, I’ve gotta go.

The call ended.

I slipped my phone into my pocket and settled against the tree again.

The fireworks continued to explode above me, one after another, painting the night in brilliant flashes

of light

I stayed there longer than I’d intended…

There was something peaceful about watching them. For once, my thoughts weren’t racing. I wasn’t thinking about Logan, Celine, the pack, or everything that had happened.

I was simply watching the sky.

Whoever that Beta was trying to impress must have been incredibly special.

All those fireworks just for her?

Wow.

Eventually, I pushed myself away from the tree and headed home.

Thankfully, it wasn’t too far, so I didn’t have to shift. By the time I reached the house, the fireworks had

completely disappeared behind me.

I opened the door and stopped.

The house was completely empty.

For a moment, I simply stood there, one hand still resting on the doorknob as my eyes moved across the quiet living room. There was no sound of footsteps, no low murmur coming from another room, nothing to suggest that Lucian had even been here.

“Lucian?”

Silence.

I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, my gaze sweeping over the room again as if he might

suddenly appear from somewhere.

Karla shifted restlessly inside me.

Where’s Mr. Mysterious?

I ignored her and walked farther into the house, checking the living room before moving toward the

kitchen. Everything was exactly as I had left it. Neat. Undisturbed.

No Lucian.

Of course there wasn’t.

Lucian was only renting this place to me Whether he came home every night or disappeared for days at a time had nothing to do with me.

At least, it shouldn’t have

You haven’t checked his room, Karla pointed out.

I rolled my eyes.

And how exactly do you expect me to do that? Break into his room? Just keep quiet.

She gave an irritated little grumble, but thankfully, she eventually fell silent.

I headed to my room, trying not to let my thoughts linger on the empty house. After changing into something more comfortable, I climbed into bed and pulled the covers over myself.

Whatever Lucian was doing, wherever he was, it wasn’t my business.

I repeated that to myself again.

And again.

Eventually, exhaustion won, dragging me into sleep before I could think about him any longer.

The next morning, I woke feeling surprisingly refreshed.

Sunlight streamed through the curtains, spilling across the room and warming the floor. For once, I hadn’t spent the night tossing and turning, and I decided not to question the rare stroke of luck.

After making myself a decent breakfast, I wandered through the house again.

Still no Lucian.

I paused in the living room, staring at the empty space where he should have been.

Something about it bothered me.

I couldn’t explain why.

Maybe it was because the house felt different without him. Quieter. Colder, somehow

I quickly shook the thought away.

Whatever.

I wasn’t going to waste my entire morning wondering where Lucian had gone. If he wanted to

disappear without saying a word, that was his choice.

And frankly, I had enough problems of my own.

I grabbed my things, locked the house behind me, and headed toward the Silvercrest packhouse.

Whatever mysterious business Lucian was involved in could wait.

I had my own mess to deal with.
