Chapter 32
AVA’S POINT OF VIEW
To be honest, I never had an appointment with Nyx.
I had simply wanted to annoy Logan.

After spending several nights away from home, I could practically feel the tension building every time I walked through the door. Logan had started to realize that I wasn’t as easy to control as he thought, and judging by the expensive dress he’d bought me, my little act of indifference was getting under his
skin.
The dress had cost hundreds of thousands.
I didn’t care about the dress itself.
But it wasn’t my money.
So I might as well enjoy it.
The moment I arrived at Mooncrest, I handed the dress to Nyx.
She stared at the box as though I’d just offered her something rotten.
“I don’t want that.”
Her nose wrinkled, and she pushed the box away.
“The dress itself is innocent, but knowing that scumbag bought it makes my skin crawl. I swear, L might break out in a rash just looking at it.”
I burst out laughing.
Nyx was practically shivering, glaring at the dress as if it had personally insulted her.
“You’re being dramatic.”
“I’m being reasonable.”
She folded her arms and looked away.
I glanced at the dress again.
Beautiful, Expensive. Completely useless to me.
Still, I had no intention of returning it.

If Logan wanted to spend his money trying to keep me happy, who was I to stop him?
Before the divorce, intended to squeeze every last benefit I could out of being his mate.
I wasn’t going to walk away with nothing.
After spending some time with Nyx, listening to her ramble about her life and the man she had been seeing, I finally headed home.
She spent most of the afternoon insisting that she didn’t think things with him were serious, despite
spending nearly an hour talking about him.
Some things never changed.
When I got home, I took a few pictures of the dress and listed it on eBay.
If someone was willing to pay that much for it, the money would be mine.
I had barely finished uploading the listing when a deep, magnetic voice came from behind me.
“You’re selling this dress?”
I froze.
Then I turned around.
Lucian stood there, his phone in one hand, his expression unreadable as his eyes settled on the dress.
There was something about the way he carried himself that made even the simplest movement seem
deliberate.
I looked back at the screen.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I need the money.”
There was no point lying about it.
His expression remained unreadable as he looked at me.
“How much?”
The question came so quickly that I blinked. For a second, I just stared at him, wondering if I had heard him correctly.

Then one eyebrow lifted.
“Oh.”
My gaze dropped to the dress between us before returning to him.
“You want to buy it?”
He gave a small nod.
The next question escaped before I could think better of it.
“For your girlfriend?”

His eyes stayed on mine. Something shifted in his expression, subtle enough that I almost missed it. His brows pulled together.
“I don’t have a girlfriend.”
I nearly choked.
“You don’t?”
The question escaped before I could catch it.
Lucian looked at me as though he couldn’t understand why I was surprised.
I quickly cleared my throat.
“Sorry. I just assumed…”
I didn’t finish.
How was someone like him single?
Even if he hadn’t found his mate yet, surely there had to be someone interested in him.
But he didn’t look like he was lying.
And I couldn’t imagine why he’d bother lying about something so insignificant.
My eyes drifted back to the dress.
Then another thought occurred to me.
If he didn’t have a girlfriend, why did he want it?
Did he know someone else who might like it?

Of:::
I glanced at him again.
No.
There was absolutely no way he wore dresses.
The thought was so ridiculous that I nearly laughed.
“If you really want it, I’ll give you a discount.”

I hadn’t cooked for the past few days, either, and I still felt slightly guilty about how little I’d been able
to do for him.
He had rented such a beautiful house to me for practically nothing.
At least I could give him a decent discount.
I was already calculating twenty percent in my head when he shook his head.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“No?”
“I’ll pay the full price.”
Before I could argue, his fingers moved across his phone.
A second later, my phone chimed.
Payment received.
I stared at the notification.
Then at him.
“You really are straightforward.”
The corner of my lips lifted.
Normally, a dress that expensive wouldn’t sell quickly on eBay. It was far too extravagant for most people, and I’d already prepared myself for the possibility of waiting months, maybe even years, before finding someone willing to pay that much.
Lucian hadn’t even given it the chance to sit there.

For a moment, I couldn’t help wondering if the Moon Goddess had sent him into my life as some kind
of lucky charm.
When I needed somewhere to stay, he provided a house.
When I needed money, he somehow appeared with an excuse to give me some.
Suspicious.
Very suspicious.
“Since you’ve already bought it…” I hesitated, then smiled. “Do you want some late-night snacks?”
He looked at me.
“There’s free-range chicken in the fridge. I can make chicken soup.”
I waited.
His answer came without hesitation.
“No need.”
Cold.
So cold.
My smile slowly disappeared.
I’d been trying to repay my good luck charm, but judging by his expression, I had somehow managed to make things awkward instead.
Maybe he didn’t want to trouble me.
That had to be it.
I shrugged it off.
There was no point trying to figure out what went on inside a man’s head.
Lucian slipped his phone into his hand and walked toward the door.
I watched him leave, my lips pressing into a small frown.
Strange man.

The next morning, I went to the packhouse to help sort through the new herbs and reorganize the supplies we’d lost.
I was halfway through arranging everything when I noticed several packages sitting on my table.
I looked around.
No one was there.
Curiosity won.
I pulled the first box toward me and opened it.
Clothes.
My eyes immediately lit up.
I lifted the first dress from its packaging.
It was black, long, and fitted, the skirt falling into an elegant fishtail silhouette.
Beautiful.
I opened the second box.
Another gown.
This one was vintage-inspired, with a rhinestone-encrusted skirt that caught the light every time I
moved it.
It was glamorous.
Almost too glamorous.
The kind of dress a Luna could wear to meet her Alpha in the middle of a grand ceremony.
I opened the third box.
This one contained a two-piece black ensemble, unbranded but clearly expensive. Subtle sequins
caught along the fabric, while the clean, sophisticated cut gave it an understated elegance.
I laid all three outfits across the table.
They were completely different.
Yet somehow, every one of them suited me.
My brows pulled together.

Who had sent these?
And why?
Three dresses at once?

It was almost as if whoever had chosen them hadn’t known which one I’d prefer and decided to let me
choose for myself.
I reached for another box.
Unlike the others, this one had been sealed carefully.
I opened it.
My breath caught.
A bowl of chicken soup sat neatly inside, accompanied by a bottle of water.
Steam still curled faintly from the soup.
The smell reached me before I could even lift the lid properly.
My stomach immediately growled.
Karla, on the other hand, seemed far more interested in the food than the mystery behind the gifts.
I stared at everything on the table.
Then a ridiculous thought crossed my mind.
Could someone have a crush on me?
I immediately grabbed my phone and called Nyx.
The moment she answered, I told her about the packages.
Then, unable to resist, I asked,
“Do you think someone has a crush on me?”
There was a brief silence.
Then Nyx’s laughter exploded through the phone.
“With everything you’ve received? Whoever has a crush on you definitely isn’t young anymore.”
I frowned.

She continued, sounding far too pleased with herself.
“He’s probably middle-aged, greasy, and balding. Be careful.”
I covered my mouth to stop myself from laughing.
Against my will, my imagination supplied a picture.

An older man in an expensive suit, a bracelet around his wrist, his hair thinning at the top as he
nervously handed me another box of gifts.
I burst out laughing.
“You’re horrible.”
“I’m being realistic.”
I rolled my eyes.
Still, whoever had sent the gifts clearly knew what they were doing.
And since they had already gone through the trouble of sending them, I decided there was no harm in
accepting them.
The soup, especially.
I ate every drop.
Later that evening, I made my way to the garden feast hall where the family dinner was being held.
Alaric had booked the entire banquet hall, and nearly all of Logan’s extended family had already
arrived.
The moment I stepped inside, several pairs of eyes turned toward me.
Logan’s gaze landed on me almost immediately.
“Why are you just arriving now?”
His voice carried enough irritation to make a few people glance between us.
I smiled.
“I got held up.”
That was all I said.
I didn’t bother explaining further.

The truth was, I’d deliberately arrived late.
I’d attended enough family banquets to know exactly what was expected of me.
In the past, I would have arrived early.

I would have checked the tables, helped organize the food, greeted every relative with a smile, and
made sure everything was perfect before Logan even stepped into the room.
I’d thought that was what a good daughter-in-law did.
And for all my effort, Logan’s relatives had smiled to my face and praised me for being sensible and
virtuous.
Behind my back, they’d said something entirely different.
That I wasn’t elegant enough.
That I behaved more like a rogue than a proper Luna.
That I couldn’t compare to my stepsister.
That a daughter raised without a mother’s guidance was bound to turn out badly.
I had swallowed every insult.
I’d smiled through every gathering.
I’d done it because I loved Logan.
Because I believed his family mattered to him.
Because I believed I mattered to him.
But that woman was gone now.
I wasn’t going to spend another evening running around trying to earn the approval of people who had
never respected me in the first place.
Logan could deal with his family himself.
My patience had already run out.
“Ava!”
Celine’s voice suddenly cut through my thoughts.
She looked me up and down before her eyes widened.

“Why aren’t you wearing the dress my brother bought for you yesterday?”
The room seemed to quiet slightly.
Celine pointed toward me, her expression turning accusatory.

“That dress is high-end. It cost my brother so much, and he bought it specifically for tonight’s family
dinner.”
She glanced around the room as if expecting everyone to take her side.
“So why aren’t you wearing it?”
Her lips curled.
“Isn’t that just wasting my brother’s good intentions?”
