Chapter 33
AVA’S POINT OF VIEW
“Why are you so wasteful?”
Elowen’s voice drifted across the table.
She approached with a wineglass balanced delicately between her fingers, wearing the kind of elegant
smile that never quite reached her eyes. Logan’s second aunt had always had a talent for making an
insult sound like concern.
Apparently, the price of my dress had offended her.
Or perhaps it was simply another excuse to remind everyone that Logan’s mate had come from a
family she considered beneath them.
Her gaze traveled slowly over me before settling on Logan.
“Logan,” she said, her tone almost playful, “you really shouldn’t spoil your mate this much. I don’t think you’ve ever bought your mother a dress that expensive, have you?”
The words were barely out before I noticed the subtle change in Isla’s expression.
I glanced from her to Elowen, then to the dress in question.
Seriously?
This entire family was going to turn a piece of clothing into a family dispute?
I almost laughed.
Apparently, in this pack, a dress wasn’t just a dress. It was a declaration of wealth, status, and who
deserved to stand where.
“If I were Ava,” Elowen continued, turning her attention back to me, “I would give a dress worth thousands of dollars to my mother-in-law. That’s what it means to be a good Luna. And a good
daughter-in-law.”
Her eyes gleamed as she said it.
She was waiting for me to squirm,
I smiled instead.
“Aunt Elowen is right.”

Her eyebrows lifted slightly, clearly pleased with herself.

“But unfortunately, that dress is far too revealing for my mother-in-law. It wouldn’t suit her.”
The smile on Elowen’s face faltered.
I turned toward Celine.
“And besides, Logan didn’t buy that dress simply because he wanted to spoil me.”
Celine’s attention snapped toward me.
I kept my smile perfectly pleasant.
“When we were shopping, Celine chose a dress that cost several hundred thousand dollars. Logan didn’t think it was fair to buy her something that expensive while getting me something considerably
cheaper, so he bought me a dress in the same price range.”
Celine’s eyes widened.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely caught off guard.
I turned to Logan.
“Isn’t that right?”
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
He glanced at Celine, then at me.
“Yes,” he finally said.
“Logan.”
Celine’s voice came out sharper than she probably intended.
I just stood there, watching her struggle to decide whether to argue with me or with Logan.
On the other hand, Karla was utterly uninterested in the spectacle. She had apparently reached the
point where even she was tired of listening to them.
I picked up my glass.
“I deliberately didn’t wear that dress tonight.”

“I thought it would make me look overdressed beside Logan, and I didn’t want the attention.” I let my gaze move around the table. “But apparently, it didn’t matter what wore. You still found something to
criticize.”
I paused, then looked directly at Elower
“So perhaps I made the right decision. If this is the reaction I get from a simple dress, I can only imagine what would have happened if I had actually worn the expensive one.
I tilted my head.
“Aren’t I right, Aunt Elowen?”
The muscles in her jaw tightened.
For a second, I thought she might snap back.
Instead, she took a slow sip of her wine.
Her silence said enough.
To my surprise, Isla spoke next.
“Actually, I think Ava has a point.”
Celine immediately turned toward her.
“Mom-”
“You chose the expensive dress first, didn’t you?”
Celine’s mouth closed.
Isla’s gaze hardened.
“I remember you telling me about it.”
The argument that followed lasted less than a minute, but it was more than enough for Celine to
realize she wasn’t going to win.
She finally fell silent beneath Isla’s pointed glare.
I let out a quiet breath and settled back into my chair.
Maybe I could survive one family dinner after all.

Unfortunately, the peace didn’t last.
Celine suddenly raised her voice.
“It’s a rare family dinner. Is it really so wrong to dress properly for the occasion?”
I looked down at my clothes.
Apparently, this was now a matter of national importance.
Celine continued, making sure everyone at the table could hear her.

“Logan has already spent the money on you. Even if you don’t want to wear something that expensive,
there’s no reason to show up in something without a brand nane and embarrass him.”
“There it is,” I thought.
The brand.
That mattered more to them than the actual clothes.
Elowen nodded enthusiastically.
“Celine is absolutely right.”
She turned toward Isla, as though expecting support.
“Ava, there’s nothing wrong with being thrifty, but there’s a time and place for everything. I don’t expect you to wear designer clothes every day, but wearing something completely unknown to a family dinner makes people wonder whether Logan has fallen on hard times.
The change in Logan’s expression was immediate.
So was Isla’s.
Both of them looked uncomfortable.
Logan, especially, looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole.
I simply took another sip of my drink.
Their opinions didn’t bother me.
I had never intended to dress for Logan’s family in the first place.
Why would I spend hours trying to impress people who had already decided I wasn’t good enough?
The clothes had been sent to me by that mysterious person, and I had deliberately chosen the most

There didn’t need to be.

The tailoring was impeccable. The material was exquisite. Anyone who actually understood clothing would have recognized the quality immediately.
But this family didn’t seem interested in quality.
They were interested in labels.
To them, the more expensive the name, the more valuable the person wearing it.
I had no interest in playing that game.
And if Logan felt embarrassed because I refused to parade around in designer clothes for his family’s
approval, that was his problem.
Besides, none of this would matter for much longer.
Logan wouldn’t be my mate forever.
Soon enough, he would be my ex-mate.
So let them think whatever they wanted.
The rest of the dinner passed without another confrontation, mostly because I stopped giving them
anything to work with.
I ate quietly while the others talked, argued, laughed, and occasionally found some new reason to
complain about one another.
I had almost convinced myself the evening was finally over when something caught my attention.
Across the room, a wolf shifted back into her human form.
I watched as she straightened, long black hair spilling down her back in a silky wave. She ran a hand
through it before looking around the room.
Then her eyes found mine.
She stopped.
For a moment, neither of us looked away.

Her expression changed.
She reached for her phone and typed something, her face suddenly serious.
I frowned.
Who was she?
“Who’s that?”
Someone from Logan’s family followed my line of sight.
I barely heard the question.

Logan had noticed her too. He shifted as though he was about to get up, but before he could move, I
caught the sharp glare Celine sent him.
I rolled my eyes.
Not everyone is trying to steal your precious Logan, you idiot.
Then I noticed the two wolves standing near the woman.
They weren’t speaking to her.
They were watching everyone around her.
Guarding her.
My attention sharpened.
There was something about her face that bothered me.
Not because I recognized her.
Because I almost did.
She started walking toward me.
The closer she came, the stronger that strange sense of familiarity became.
I started walking toward her before she could reach me.
When she finally stopped in front of me, a faint smile curved her lips.
Almost a smirk.
“So,” she said, looking me over, “you’re the one Alpha Lucian had people in the pack working on last

night for this dress.”
My smile disappeared.
I stared at her.
The dress.

Suddenly, every strange thing that had happened over the past few days collided in my mind.
The clothes.
The food.
The chicken soup.
The mysterious person who had somehow known exactly what I needed before I ever asked.
My heart gave a strange little jolt.
Could it be her?
“Told you he was mysterious,” Karla murmured inside my head, sounding far too pleased with herself
after being silent for so long.
No.
That couldn’t be right.
Nyx had said the person was old.
But Nyx doesn’t know that..
And there was something else.
She had mentioned Alpha Lucian.
There was only one Alpha Lucian I knew.
The woman’s smile deepened as if she could see the questions racing through my mind.
Then she extended her hand.
“Hello, Luna Avery. I’m Seraphina Blackwood.”
I stared at her outstretched hand for half a second before taking it.
The moment I heard her surname, everything inside me went still.

Blackwood.
My fingers tightened around hers.
Blackwood?
There was only one Blackwood whose name mattered to me.
Lucian Blackwood.
My gaze slowly lifted to hers.
She smiled.
And suddenly, the pieces fell into place.
She wasn’t just some mysterious woman who happened to know about my dress.
She was-
Lucian Blackwood’s sister.
“Fuck.”
The realization hit me like a blow.
I had just been standing here talking to Seraphina Blackwood.
