I smiled as I looked over the table. Tonight, I had gone all out, filling it with a sumptuous dinner I had prepared myself. It was more food than two people could possibly need, but I wanted the evening to feel special. More importantly, I wanted Lucian to stay.
“Please don’t reject my offer,” I said, adjusting the apron around my waist with a hopeful smile.
Lucian’s gaze moved from the table to me.
For a moment, he said nothing.
His expression remained unreadable, his dark eyes as cold and still as ever. Then, without a word, he
gave a small nod and pulled out a chair.
That was it.
No smile. No polite remark. Not even a hint that he appreciated the effort.
I was beginning to get used to it.
Lucian seemed to have been born without the need for unnecessary words. Every response was
measured, every expression carefully restrained. Yet, sometimes, when our eyes met, I caught
something fleeting in the depths of his gaze.
Something warmer.
Something that disappeared so quickly I often wondered if I had imagined it.
Tonight was no different.
And I deliberately didn’t bring up the dinner at his pack. Tonight wasn’t about that. It was about
celebrating, and perhaps, in some small way, making up for the fact that I hadn’t held up my end of the deal after he’d rented me this house at such a generous price.
Still, I wasn’t going to let the matter slip entirely. Once he was ready to leave, I would find the right
moment to ask him about the dinner.
I untied my apron and placed it aside before taking the seat across from him. The contrast between us almost made me laugh.
Lucian was dressed in his usual black, the dark fabric making him look even more intimidating
beneath the warm dining-room lights. I, on the other hand, was wearing a bright yellow dress that
practically glowed beside him.

We looked like we belonged in completely different worlds.
I pressed my lips together to keep from smiling.

He was so…
“Ding!”
My phone chimed against the table.
I glanced down and saw Logan’s name on the screen. I rolled my eyes at the message before turning the phone facedown.
When I looked up, Lucian was already watching me.
His expression had not changed, but something in his eyes had.
The warmth I had occasionally caught before was gone.
His gaze had darkened, turning distant and impenetrable.
I decided not to think too much about it.
Instead, I picked up my fork and began eating.
Across from me, Lucian ate in silence.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
His movements were controlled, almost unnaturally so. Every now and then, I felt his eyes settle on me, but there was something strange about the way he looked at me. It was as though he was watching without truly allowing himself to see.
Then his gaze dropped back to his plate.
The silence stretched between us.
It wasn’t comfortable.
It was the kind of silence that made me suddenly aware of every small sound in the room. The faint clink of cutlery. The scrape of his fork against the plate. Even my own breathing seemed too loud.
I started to feel like I was sitting at the table alone.
Eventually, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Uhhmm… Lucian.”
His hand paused.
Then he slowly lifted his head.
Our eyes met.
And there it was again.

For the briefest moment, something shifted in those deep, cold eyes. They seemed almost brighter as they settled on mine.
I blinked.
Maybe Karla was right.
Maybe I really was seeing things that weren’t there.
Told ya.
I cleared my throat.
“Our new herbs from the Silvercrest Pack have become a natural healing remedy for wolves across
several packs,” I said, trying to sound casual. “Have you considered getting some for your pack too?”
Silence.
Lucian placed his fork down.
The soft clink against the plate sounded strangely loud.
“You want me to patronize your pack’s new herb?”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
One eyebrow lifted slightly, but there was no amusement in his face.
Then his eyes moved over the table, taking in the ridiculous amount of food I had prepared.
“That’s why you deliberately made so many dishes?”
There was no accusation in his tone.
That somehow made it worse.

He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t annoyed
He simply sounded… empty.
His face revealed nothing, his dark eyes giving me no clue what he was thinking.
I held his gaze.
“You misunderstood.”
I leaned back slightly, allowing a small, sly smile to tug at my lips.

“Tonight is mainly to celebrate the success of my hard work. Of course, there is also a little intention behind all this.”
I wasn’t going to lie to him.
If I wanted the herbs to reach more packs, I needed connections. Lucian had them, and pretending otherwise would only waste both our time.
“It seems you’re close to Alpha Kion,” I continued. “You could speak to him about collaborating with us. Or perhaps some of the other Alphas you’re acquainted with. It would really help the Silvercrest Pack.”
Lucian stared at me.
Not at the food.
Not at my smile.
At me.
His gaze remained fixed on my face for several long seconds, so unreadable that I found myself shifting slightly in my chair.
Then he looked away.
“You’ve misunderstood too.”
He reached for his glass and took a slow sip of water.
I frowned.
What had I misunderstood this time?
He placed the glass back on the table with quiet precision.

“You don’t need to cook all these dishes.”
Before I could respond, he pushed his chair back.
The legs scraped softly against the floor.
He gathered his plate and stood.
I watched him, confused.
Then he looked at me.

His expression remained as cold and composed as ever, but his next words caught me completely off guard.
“Just ask, and I’ll help you.”
He said it so simply.
As though it were the most obvious thing in the world.
As though he hadn’t just offered to use his influence to help me without asking for anything in return.
I froze.
Lucian held my gaze for another moment before turning toward the kitchen, his plate in one hand.
I stared after him.
Once.
Twice.
My mind struggled to catch up with what had just happened.
Wait.
Was he saying he didn’t want me exhausting myself just to get his help?
Was that why he had been staring at all the food?
I looked down at the table, suddenly noticing just how much I had prepared.
Then I looked toward the kitchen.
Or maybe I was overthinking it.
After all, this was Lucian.

The same man who could look at someone as though he could see straight through them and still leave them wondering what was going on inside his head.
I remained seated, waiting for him to return.
But his words had already settled somewhere in my mind, refusing to leave.
Just ask, and I’ll help you.
