AVA’S POINT OF VIEW

Last night had been funny in a way I still couldn’t quite explain. Mostly because I never got the chance
to ask Lucian about the date again.
Or maybe because he had made sure I didn’t.
Either way, I let him go. By the next morning, he was already gone, so I didn’t dwell on it too much. I figured I’d talk to him the next time I saw him.
Now, I sat in the backseat of Logan’s car, watching the streets slide past the window. He had only sent me a short text earlier, telling me we were going somewhere, and foolishly, I had assumed that
somewhere meant the Packhouse.
But as the familiar roads disappeared behind us, I realized we weren’t heading back there at all.
I leaned forward slightly. “Where are you taking me?”
“Somewhere I’m sure you’ll like.”
His eyes met mine briefly through the rearview mirror, and the small smile on his face made me
suspicious immediately.
The car eventually pulled into the parking lot of an enormous luxury store.
I stared at the building, then at Logan.
“Why did you bring me here?”
He parked and turned toward me with a smile. “I’ve wanted to buy you something for a while, but 1 haven’t had the time. You helped me with such a major launch, Ava. I should do something to show
my appreciation.”
I got out of the car and shut the door behind me, fighting the urge to laugh.
“So, this how you reward your high-performing employees, Alpha?”
The smile slipped from his face.
“I am not rewarding an employee.” He frowned. “I’m doing something for my wife. For my mate.
You’ve been wonderful, Ava.”
The certainty in his voice was almost impressive.

Anyone listening would have thought I had the most thoughtful husband in the world.
I, on the other hand, felt my stomach twist.
Wonderful mate, huh?

I forced a smile and followed him inside.
“Don’t let your anger make you stupid,” Karla murmured in my mind. “He may be a scumbag, but his
money isn’t.”
A small smile tugged at my lips.
For once, I couldn’t argue with her.
Logan led me straight toward the jewelry section, and the sight of glittering diamonds beneath the glass almost made me roll my eyes. Of course he had brought me here. A necklace, a few flattering words, perhaps a kiss on the forehead, and suddenly he could pretend everything between us was
perfect.
Unfortunately for him, I was no longer interested in making things easy.
The old Ava had never been particularly demanding. Even after we became mates, I rarely asked
Logan for anything expensive.
In fact, I couldn’t remember the last time I had accepted a gift from him worth more than five
thousand dollars.
But the old Ava had also believed that love meant making excuses for him.
This Ava was learning.
So, while Logan waited beside me, I began looking through the most expensive necklaces in the
display cases.
And then I looked at more.
And more.
The price tags quickly climbed past figures I knew would make most people blink twice.
Logan’s expression began to change.
“That one is beautiful,” he said, pointing toward a simpler necklace. “But something like this is more
practical for everyday wear.”
I pretended not to hear him.

My fingers moved to another necklace.

He cleared his throat. “Ava, I mean, you’ll probably get more use out of something less-”
I picked up another one.
Behind me, I heard him mutter under his breath, “Never mind. We only made this money thanks to you
anyway…”
His phone began ringing.
I ignored it and continued browsing.
The ringing went on.
And on.
Finally, when the sound began to grate on my nerves, I turned toward him.
“Who is it?”
“N-no one.”
The answer came too quickly.
His eyes widened slightly, as though he had realized how suspicious he sounded.
“No one important,” he corrected.
Interesting.
He hung up immediately and walked toward me.
“Have you chosen a necklace yet?”
“Yes.”
I led him toward a counter where a shop assistant stood holding two necklaces I had chosen.
The moment she saw us together, her smile widened.
I didn’t need Karla’s wolf instincts to know what she was thinking.
The Alpha taking his Luna shopping.
The perfect mate.
The beautiful couple.

Lalmost wanted to laugh.
“I like them both,” I told Logan, studying the necklaces thoughtfully. “I can’t decide.”
The shop assistant was quick to seize the opportunity.
“Then why not buy both?” she said brightly. “Luna Ava is so beautiful, and both necklaces suit you perfectly. You could wear them with different outfits.”
I glanced at the price tags again.
One was worth 1.04 million.
The other was 1.7 million.
Together, they would cost almost three million.
Now that was interesting.
I turned to Logan.
He was staring at me.
Not angrily.
Not yet.
More like he was trying to figure out when his mate had been replaced by a complete stranger.
When he remained silent, I smiled sweetly.
“Forget it,” I said. “Buying two would probably be too much trouble for you.”
The shop assistant’s smile faltered slightly as she looked at Logan.
His jaw tightened.
He opened his mouth to speak, but his phone rang again.
This time, my eyes dropped to the screen before he could turn it away.
Celine.
With a heart beside her name.
Of course.
“It’s Celine,” I said lightly. “You should answer.”

He rejected the call without hesitation and smiled at me as though that little gesture should have
impressed me.
“Whatever she wants can wait. Buying your necklace is more important.
He had barely finished speaking before I felt the urge to laugh.
He was really trying, wasn’t he?
“I’ll buy you one,” he added.
One.
I stared at him.
Then at the two necklaces.
So you really can’t afford both, Alpha?
The words danced at the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed them.
Instead, I pointed to the more expensive necklace.
“The one worth 1.7 million.”
I actually liked the other design better.
But suddenly, I liked the thought of Logan spending more money on me even more.
“Excellent choice, Luna,” the shop assistant said.
Logan’s smile looked slightly strained.
I almost felt bad.
Almost.
While the shop assistant carefully packaged the necklace, Logan went to pay.
That was when his phone rang for the third time.
I glanced at the screen.
This time, it wasn’t Celine.
Logan frowned and answered.

“Hello?”
There was a brief pause before a woman’s voice came through the phone.

“Excuse me, am I speaking with Anaya’s uncle? I’m one of the teachers at Hearthstone Kindergarten. Anaya suddenly has a stomachache, and her mother has already arrived, but she’s crying and insisting that she wants you. She asked us to call you.”
I blinked.
Anaya’s uncle?
Karla snorted in my head.
Does this kindergarten realize they’re calling the Alpha because a child has a stomachache?
Apparently not.
But the amusement faded the moment I looked at Logan.
He was already moving.
The call had barely ended before he hung up and hurried toward me, his expression filled with panic.
“Ava, I’m sorry.”
His hand came around my arm, and I had to fight the instinct to pull away immediately.
“Anaya’s teacher just called. She has a stomachache, and she’s crying for me. I have to go there and
take her to the hospital.”
His voice softened, as though he expected me to understand.
Of course he did.
“Choose whichever necklace you want and buy it yourself,” he continued. “I’ll reimburse you when I get
back.”
And just like that, he turned around and walked out.
I stood there.
For several seconds, I didn’t move.
Then I slowly folded my arms across my chest.
The cold that spread through me had nothing to do with the air-conditioned store.

How had I ever been so stupid?

How had convinced myself that Logan loved me so deeply that he would do anything for me?
The truth was almost laughable.
After we got married, the gifts he bought for me had never been worth more than ten thousand dollars.
Lucian had spent more than fifty thousand dollars on suits without blinking.
And me?
I had been the one defending Logan.
I had managed the household finances and made sure he never had to worry about the money he
spent. After all, he was the Alpha. He needed expensive clothes for status. He needed to look the part.
And as his mate, I had never wanted him to feel embarrassed because of what he wore.
Thinking about the woman I used to be made something inside me ache.
I wanted to grab my past self by the shoulders and shake some sense into her.
“Luna?”
The shop assistant’s hesitant voice pulled me back.
The necklace was already packaged, the elegant box sitting neatly on the counter between us.
But the Alpha who was supposed to pay for it had disappeared.
I looked at the box.
Then at her.
“I’m sorry,” I said, offering her a polite smile. “But I won’t be buying the necklace anymore.”
Her face fell.
I couldn’t blame her. The sale she had been expecting had just vanished into thin air.
Still, I had no intention of spending 1.7 million of my own money simply to save face.
Embarrassment was free.
A necklace worth over a million was not.
I turned and started toward the exit.

Lwas only a few steps away when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.
I frowned.

I hadn’t damaged anything while trying the necklace on. Was she seriously going to accuse me of
something just to force me into paying?
“Luna Ava, please wait!”
The shop assistant hurried toward me and stopped in front of me, slightly out of breath.
I lifted a brow.
“What is it?”
