Chapter 42

AVA’S POINT OF VIEW

I watched Logan’s face drain of color.

For a moment, he simply stood there, staring at me as though he was waiting for me to change my

mind. When I didn’t, his jaw tightened. Then he gave a stiff shake of his head and turned away.

I couldn’t have cared less.

I started toward the stairs, ready to put the entire ridiculous encounter behind me. Celine and Naya

were still standing there, but they were no longer my concern.

I had barely placed one foot on the first step when something prickled at the back of my neck.

Karla stirred.

Ava.

I caught the movement from the corner of my eye.

Naya was coming toward me.

Fast-or at least, as fast as she could manage.

And the second I saw the way she angled herself toward me, I knew exactly what she was trying to do.

“Oh!”

She stumbled dramatically, throwing her arms out as though she had suddenly lost her balance.

Seriously?

I stepped aside.

Naya’s eyes widened.

She hadn’t expected me to move.

Without me there to catch her fall-or rather, break it for her-she lurched forward. Her feet tangled

beneath her, and she crashed to the ground.

A sharp crack rang through the mall,

The plaster ornament beside the stairs had taken the worst of it.

It shattered.

Pièces scattered across the polished floor.

For one heartbeat, Naya lay there in stunned silence.

Then she burst into tears

Celine rushed to her immediately, gathering her into her arms. “Oh, sweetheart!”

I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing.

Then Celine looked up.

Her glare landed squarely on me.

“It’s all Ava’s fault!” Celine snapped. “You need to stand up for Naya, Logan!”

I didn’t bother turning around.

By the time her words reached me, I was already walking away.

Let them say whatever they wanted.

It didn’t matter whether Logan yelled at me or not.

Because Logan had already lost his money.

A smile tugged at the corner of my lips as I descended the stairs.

All those bills he’d escaped from?

He would have no choice but to pay them now.

Only this time, they wouldn’t be spent on me.

And judging by the things Anaya had destroyed, he’d be paying far more than he ever expected.

They’d be spent on his precious daughter.

Suits him right, Karla said with satisfaction.

I couldn’t agree more.

By the time I got home, the excitement of the afternoon had long since faded.

Isat curled into the corner of the sofa, staring blankly at the coffee table in front of me. My coffee had gone untouched and cold.

Two jewelry boxes sat beside it.

I rested my chin against my hand and sighed.

This afternoon at the jewelry store had been strange enough.

At first, when the shop assistant stopped me, I’d assumed I was about to be accused of something. After everything that had happened with the necklace, I had been prepared for another ridiculous confrontation.

Instead, she’d handed me two beautifully packaged boxes.

“This is your necklace,” she’d said politely. “The shop manager asked me to give it to you.”

I had stared at the boxes in confusion.

“I haven’t paid for these.”

“Our manager has already taken care of it.”

“Who is your manager?”

“Marta Kade.”

The name meant absolutely nothing to me; neither did it ring a bell.

“I’m sorry,” I’d told her, pushing the boxes back toward her. “I can’t accept something I didn’t pay for.”

I had turned to leave.

Then the lady had stopped me again.

“Please, Luna Ava.”

The desperation in her voice made me pause.

“If you don’t accept them, I might lose my job.”

I sighed.

That was the last thing I wanted. I wasn’t about to make someone’s life difficult over a situation I

didn’t even understand.

So, instead, I asked her to take me to Marta Kade.

Unfortunately, that only made things more confusing.

Marta explained that someone had arranged the purchase but had chosen to remain anonymous. It had been handled as a business transaction, and she couldn’t disclose anything more.

Every answer I received only led to another question.

Eventually, I gave up.

I left the store carrying two necklaces worth a total of three million and wandered around the mall,

hoping a little mindless shopping might clear my head.

It didn’t.

If anything, it gave me more time to think.

There was one person who immediately came to mind.

Lucian.

He was the only person I knew who might casually spend that much on a gift and act as though it was

nothing.

But I hadn’t asked him.

And now, sitting here and staring at the two dazzling necklaces on my coffee table, I wasn’t sure what

to do with them.

Keeping them seemed pointless. They were far too expensive to sit in a drawer, collecting dust.

Selling them didn’t feel right either.

Whoever had sent them had spent a ridiculous amount of money.

And before I knew they weren’t from Logan, I had wanted him to buy them just so I could sell them

afterward and enjoy watching him regret wasting his money.

Now?

Now I didn’t even know who the mysterious giver was.

“What are you thinking so hard about?”

I jumped, my hand slipping slightly from where it rested against my chin.

When I looked up, Lucian was standing in front of me.

Lhadn’t even heard him come in.

For a second, I just stared at him before my gaze drifted toward the two necklaces resting on the coffee table. The boxes seemed almost impossible to ignore now

Then my eyes flickered back to his.

Did you buy these for me?

The question rose so quickly that I nearly asked it aloud.

My lips parted.

But something stopped me.

What if he hadn’t?

I glanced away, swallowing the question along with the strange flutter of anticipation that had started

building in my chest.

Instead, I kept quiet.

“I’m trying to decide which one to wear,” I said.

It was a lie.

A terrible one.

But even if I asked him seriously, there was no guarantee he’d tell me the truth.

And what if he wasn’t the one who sent them?

Just ask him, Karla urged.

Before I could make up my mind, Lucian’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.

“Why don’t you try them on?”

I looked at him for a moment before giving a small nod.

Lucian stepped toward the coffee table and picked up one of the necklaces. I pushed myself off the

sofa, watching him as he turned back to me.

He crossed the small distance between us.

And suddenly, he was closer than I’d expected.

My breath caught.

His gaze dropped to my neck, lingering there for just a moment. Something about the quiet focus in his eyes made me shift beneath his attention, suddenly far too aware of how close he was.

Lucian cleared his throat

I turned around, gathering my hair and sweeping it over one shoulder, leaving the back of my neck exposed to him.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The silence stretched between us.

Then I felt him step closer.

His fingers brushed against my skin.

My entire body went still.

It was only the lightest touch as he lifted the necklace around my neck, yet warmth spread across my skin as though I had been caught too close to a fire.

I closed my eyes.

Get a grip, I told myself.

But Karla was suspiciously quiet.

I felt the necklace settle against my skin.

Lucian’s fingers lingered for the briefest second before he fastened the clasp.

Then he stepped back.

Only then did I realize I had been holding my breath.

I exhaled slowly.

The strange tension in my chest loosened slightly.

“Beautiful.”

His voice was low.

I froze.

Then I glanced at him and gave an awkward little laugh.

“Anyone wearing something this dazzling would look beautiful.”

Lucian muttered something beneath his breath

I didn’t catch it.

When I turned toward him, he was still watching me.

“You can wear this one.”

My mouth parted.

Before I could ask another question-or mention the dinner, or the necklaces, or anything at all-Lucian turned and walked away.

“Lucian-”

The name barely left my lips.

He didn’t stop.

A moment later, he disappeared from the living room.

And I remained there, standing in front of the sofa with the necklace resting against my collarbone.

Unable to move.

Unable to call him back.

Because even after he’d gone, I could still feel the ghost of his touch against my skin.

I wish Ava would leave Logan sooner and be with Lucian…I hope.
