Chapter 43
LOGAN’S POINT OF VIEW

I’d spent the past two days away on pack business, moving from one meeting to another until the hours blurred together. By the time I finally got back, exhaustion sat heavily on my shoulders, but there
was still one thing on my mind.
Celine’s new project.
Before I left, Ava had tried to tell me about an idea she had for the new herbal launch. I hadn’t even let
her finish. Celine had already presented me with a better plan-or so I’d believed-and I’d cut Ava off almost immediately.,
Celine knew what she was doing. She always did.
So, despite how exhausted I was, I found myself curious to see how much progress she’d made.
Maybe she’d even surprise me.
What I didn’t expect was to walk into the room and find her looking as though the world had just collapsed around her.
I stopped in the doorway.
Celine stood in front of her vanity, but she clearly hadn’t finished getting ready. One side of her face was made up while the other remained bare, and strands of hair had escaped around her face. She was pacing back and forth, her fingers twisting together anxiously.
My brows pulled together.
“Celine?”
The moment I stepped toward her, she jerked away from my touch.
I froze.
“What happened?” I asked, studying her carefully. “Did something go wrong with the work?”
Her head snapped toward me.
For a second, she simply stared.
Then her face twisted into a scowl.
“Oh, so you’d love that, wouldn’t you?” she snapped. “You’d love for things to go badly for me.”

“What?”
“Don’t act confused.”

I stared at her. Her reaction was so sharp, so completely out of proportion, that I almost wondered if
something else had happened while I was away.
“Did you drink something?” I asked cautiously. “I’m just worried about you.”
Fenrir chuckled in the back of my mind.
I clenched my jaw.
You’re enjoying this?
His amusement only deepened.
That did nothing for my mood.
“Is there anyone who actually cares about me?” Celine suddenly demanded. Her voice rose as she
threw her hands into the air.
“I’m here working myself to the bone for your pack, and you disappear on a business trip for days without even bothering to ask how I was doing!”
The last two days of exhausting negotiations flashed through my mind, and something inside me
tightened.
“I was working,” I said, my voice turning colder. “I wasn’t away having fun.”
Celine scoffed.
The way she was acting made it painfully obvious that she was struggling to handle the project.
“And besides,” I continued, irritation creeping into my tone, “this project originally belonged to Ava. You insisted on taking it over. If it’s too difficult now, maybe you shouldn’t have taken it in the first place.”
The silence that followed was immediate.
Celine’s eyes widened.
For a moment, she looked genuinely stunned.
Then anger slowly crept across her face.

“What did you just say?”
She planted her hands on her hips and let out a sharp, humorless laugh.
“You think I stole Ava’s job?”
I frowned, already losing patience with the direction this conversation was taking.
“Celine-”

“Do you think I stole everything from her?” she cut in, stepping closer. Her eyes burned with fury. “Is
that what you think?”
I said nothing.
Her laugh came again, louder this time.
“Do you think I stole her project?” she demanded. “Her place? Her mate?”
My jaw tightened.
The direction this conversation was taking was beginning to irritate me.
This had nothing to do with what we were originally talking about, yet somehow, Celine was turning it
into something else entirely.
Of course I loved Celine.
That had never changed.
But the truth was more complicated than she wanted to admit.
Ava had been promised to me since childhood. She was the woman I had formally mated with, the woman everyone recognized as my mate and wife.
And for four years, despite that title, she had never truly had a normal marriage with me.
Because of Celine.
Because of the promises I had made,
Ava had been denied things that should have belonged to her as my mate, and no matter how complicated my feelings toward her were, I couldn’t deny that I owed her. Emotionally. Morally.
Celine laughed bitterly.
“I’ve been with you for years without any official status,” she said, her voice trembling now. “I even had

your child. Don’t you think Ava is the one taking my place? Yet somehow, I’m the thief?”
“Celine, Ava has nothing but a title,” I said, trying to reason with her. “You have me.”
Her expression didn’t change.
“And Anaya,” I added.
“What good is that?”
Her scream rang through the room.
Before I could react, she swept her arm across the vanity.
Everything came crashing down.

Bottles shattered against the floor. Makeup scattered everywhere. The sharp sound of breaking glass
made me flinch.
I stared at her.
Celine stood there, breathing hard, her chest rising and falling as she looked down at the mess.
I had seen her angry before.
But never like this.
Never so… out of control.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I demanded.
Her head snapped up.
“Get out.”
I frowned.
“Celine-”
“Get out!”
She pointed toward the door, her entire body trembling.
“Get out of here!”
Something inside me finally snapped.
I wasn’t going to stand there and let her throw a tantrum simply because she didn’t like what I had

said.
Without another word, I turned and strode toward the door.
The sound of it slamming shut echoed behind me.
The moment I stepped outside, the cool night air hit my face.
I kept walking.
And before I could stop myself, my thoughts drifted to Ava.
At least Ava had never spoken to me that way.

She had never screamed at me, thrown things, or looked at me as though I were her enemy.
The thought settled uncomfortably in my chest.
Ava was my true mate.
My steps slowed.
Darkness had already swallowed the pack grounds, and the night was quiet around me. I pulled out my phone and stared at her name for a moment before pressing it.
The call rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Just when I thought she might not answer, the line connected.
I immediately lifted the phone to my ear.
“Ava, where are you?”
There was a brief pause.
Then her voice came through, casual and completely unaware of the storm I’d just walked away from
“I’m at Nyx’s shop.”
I didn’t hesitate.
“I’m coming to find you right now.”
