LUCIAN’S POINT OF VIEW

The moment Ava’s friend called to tell me she was drunk, everything had been doing lost its
importance.
I left immediately.
By the time I stepped outside, Ava’s friend had already pulled up in front of the house. I walked toward
the car, forcing my expression into its usual calm mask, even though my steps had carried me there
much faster than I would have liked to admit.
“I’m so sorry to trouble you, Lucian.”
“You’re not troubling me.”
My voice came out steady. Controlled.
Her friend nodded before stepping aside, and I looked through the open car door.
Ava was slumped against the seat, deeply asleep.
For a moment, I simply stared at her.
Even drunk, she looked peaceful.
“She’s sleeping so soundly,” her friend murmured.
She glanced toward the house, clearly waiting for me to open the door so she could help bring Ava
inside.
But Ava shifted in her sleep, her brows pulling together slightly, and something inside me tightened.
“I’ve got her.”
I reached into the car and carefully lifted Ava onto my back, making sure she was secure before
standing upright.
“Thank you for bringing her home,” I told her friend. “You can leave the rest to me.”
She nodded, though I could feel her gaze following me as I turned toward the house.
“Hey, wait-”
I didn’t turn around.

I failed.
The moment I stepped into the house, I headed for the stairs.
Then Ava stirred.
“Lucian…”
My foot stopped on the next step.
Everything inside me went still.
Her voice was soft. Barely more than a drunken murmur. But hearing that name leave her lips sent something sharp and unfamiliar through my chest.
Behind the silence in my mind, Noctis stirred.
He didn’t say a word.
Neither did I.
We had both worked far too hard to bury certain emotions. To pretend they had never existed. Yet with Ava resting against my back, her warm breath brushing against my ear, those carefully buried feelings clawed their way to the surface.
I waited.
A few seconds passed.
Her breathing slowly evened out again.
But when she exhaled, the soft warmth of her breath brushed over my skin, and my heart betrayed me with a sudden, hard beat.
I frowned.
Get a grip.
Noctis remained unusually quiet.
That was how I knew he was feeling it too.
I continued up the stairs, exhaling slowly as I forced myself to focus on something-anything-other than the woman on my back.

When I reached Ava’s side of the house, I headed toward her room. Fortunately, the door wasn’t
locked.
I pushed it open.
The room was neat.
Organized.
Soft.
Just like her.
I walked over to the bed and carefully lowered her onto it, making sure her head rested comfortably against the pillow.
Ava shifted onto her side, her hair falling across her face.
I should leave.
That was the sensible thing to do.
Instead, I stood there.
My gaze remained fixed on her.
The alcohol had left a faint flush across her cheeks, making her skin look warmer than usual. Her lips were slightly parted as she breathed, soft and full and-
Damn.
I looked away.
Noctis shifted within me.
He clearly disapproved.
But he didn’t disagree.
The room was silent except for the faint sound of Ava’s breathing.
And somehow, despite the cool air in the room, heat slowly began crawling beneath my skin.
I loosened my collar, slipping a finger beneath it as though a little more air would somehow make the
tightness in my chest disappear.
It didn’t.

If anything, it only made me more aware of how warm I felt.
My throat was dry.
My chest felt tight, every breath seeming heavier than it should have been. It made no sense. The room was cool, and Ava was the one who had been drinking.
Yet I was the one struggling to remain composed.
My gaze drifted back to her.
Ava was asleep.
I should leave.
That was the obvious thing to do. The moment I stepped outside this room, I would feel better. The cool air would clear my head, and everything inside me would settle back into place.
I would be composed again.
Unbothered.
Like I was supposed to be.
We should leave, Noctis finally said, his voice unusually quiet.
I didn’t move.
For a few seconds, I simply stood there, staring at Ava’s sleeping figure.
Then I realized something that unsettled me more than it should have.
I didn’t want to leave.
My jaw tightened.
I had never been the kind of man to lose control of himself, and I certainly would never take advantage of someone who wasn’t fully aware of herself.
Never.
But I couldn’t stop myself from moving closer.
Noctis immediately stiffened.
What are you doing?
I ignored him.

Ava’s forchead was damp with sweat, her hair sticking slightly to her skin. My hand hovered for a moment before I gently brushed a strand away from her face.
Then another.
Slowly, carefully, I combed my fingers through her damp hair, separating the strands and moving them away from her forehead.
The simple act shouldn’t have affected me.
But it did.
My heartbeat grew louder in my ears with every second I remained that close to her.
Noctis had gone completely silent.
When I finally finished, I looked down at her face-
And froze.
Her eyes were open.
For one dangerous second, neither of us moved.
Ava stared at me, her sleepy gaze slightly unfocused as if she was still trying to figure out where she
was.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Noctis stirred sharply.
I almost pulled away.
Almost.
Her gaze slowly drifted downward.
Straight to my open shirt.
I suddenly became very aware of the exposed skin beneath her eyes.
Ava blinked.
“Did I do something to you while I was drunk?”
Her voice came out soft and small.
She rubbed her forehead and winced slightly.

“Let me get you some carprofen,” I said immediately.
“Thank you.”

She slowly pushed herself into a sitting position.
Before she could say anything else, turned and walked out of the room.
The moment the door closed behind me, I released the breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding.
My heart was beating far too fast.
And Noctis was absolutely no help.
I grabbed the medicine and a glass of water before heading back to her room.
The moment I entered, Ava’s gaze dropped to my chest again.
Then quickly returned to my face.
Fuck.
I should have fixed my shirt before coming back.
I set the tray down beside her and silently buttoned my shirt, one button at a time, forcing my
expression back into the calm, unreadable mask everyone expected from me.
“Are you sure I didn’t do anything to you?”
Her voice was almost squeaky with worry.
“No.”
She studied me.
“Then what did you do to me?”
My eyes met hers.
For a moment, I couldn’t look away.
There was no fear in her gaze. No suspicion.
Only curiosity.
And something else I couldn’t quite name.
“I just fixed your hair,” I said. “You were sweating.”

“That’s it?”
Something in her voice made me pause.
Was that disappointment?
No.
I had to be imagining it.
“Thank you so much for your help tonight,” she said, reaching for the medicine.
She reached for the carprofen and swallowed it with the water.
I watched her carefully.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded, looking down at the glass in her hands.
“Yeah. I am.”
I hesitated before asking the question that had been bothering me since I saw her.
“Is something bothering you?”
Her brows lifted.
“Why do you ask that?”
“Because I rarely see you drink this much.”
Concern slipped into my voice before I could hide it.
Ava looked at me for a moment.
Then she smiled.
Even after everything she’d had to drink, she still somehow managed to look radiant.

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I didn’t drink because something was bothering me. I was just
happy.”
“Happy?”
“Yes.” Her smile widened. “I went to the most famous Black Rose Club in Mooncrest with Nyx.”
My expression changed immediately.

“Black Rose?”
She nodded enthusiastically.
“The guys there were incredibly handsome. And they were really good at performing.”
My brows drew together.
Of course.
She noticed.
A small laugh escaped her.
“Of course, they don’t meet your beauty standards.”
I stared at her.
The tension in my shoulders slowly disappeared.
She hadn’t even realized what she’d just done.
But I had.
My chest loosened.
The corner of my mouth almost lifted.
She thinks I’m more handsome than them.
Noctis’s pride practically radiated through me.
Obviously.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
But I couldn’t stop the warmth that settled somewhere deep in my chest.
For once, I didn’t mind hearing Noctis’s smug voice.
Because Ava had said it,
And somehow, that made all the difference.

We talked for a few more minutes, mostly about whether she was feeling better. Eventually, her responses grew quieter, her eyelids becoming heavier with every passing second.
“You should get some sleep,” I said.

She nodded.
I stood and walked toward the door.
Just before leaving, I glanced back.
Ava was already curled beneath the covers, her eyes slowly closing.
For a moment, I simply watched her.
Then I quietly shut the door behind me.
I started toward my own room.
Then I stopped.
For several seconds, I stared down the hallway, listening to the silence of the house.
Ava was asleep.
Safe.
But something inside me refused to settle.
With a quiet exhale, I pulled out my phone.
Noctis immediately knew what I was thinking.
I ignored him as I opened the booking page.
Then I booked a flight back to my pack.
Two tickets.
