Back when Alaric had used my father to force me into cleaning up Logan’s mess, I had started thinking about how to turn the tables. And Celine, ambitious and opportunistic as she was, had always
been predictable.
If there was something to gain, she would reach for it.
If there was credit to steal, she would take it.
So I had given her the perfect opportunity.
And she had taken that opportunity and used it to destroy Logan.
I smiled at the thought and pushed my chair back.
“Excuse me,” I said sweetly.
Lucian frowned.
“You’re not excused, Ava.”
I blinked.
He looked almost annoyingly calm as he gestured toward my seat.
“Sit down.”
My brows pulled together. “I need to use the restroom.”
His gaze settled on me again.
Calm.
Steady.
Far too knowing.
“You don’t have to lie.”
I stared at him.
What?
“You’re the one treating me,” he continued, as though he hadn’t just caught me in a lie I hadn’t even
realized was obvious. “You should be present.”
For a second, I was completely speechless.
How did he know we were lying? Karla muttered.

We? I shot back.
You’re the one with the terrible poker face.
I pressed my lips together to keep from reacting.

Then, with as much dignity as I could manage, I slowly lowered myself back into my seat.
“You’re right,” I said with a pleasant smile. “I should be present.”
Lucian leaned back slightly.
“So you won’t miss the performance.”
My smile faltered.
My brows creased.
I wasn’t planning to use the restroom at all. I had wanted to sneak away and see what was happening between Logan and Celine.
Then smile about it.
Because apparently we’re the bad guys now, Karla said sarcastically.
I almost laughed.
Instead, I looked at Lucian.
How did he know?
And why did it feel like he always knew more than he should?
I decided not to think about it.
Whatever happened between Logan and Celine could wait.
The lights around the restaurant dimmed, and my attention shifted toward the open space at the front.
Music began to flow through the room.
The performance started slowly.
A single woman stepped onto the stage in human form, her costume shimmering beneath the soft lights. She moved with the music, every turn of her body deliberate, graceful. Then a low growl rolled
through the room.
The crowd fell silent.

A wolf emerged from the shadows.
Not just any wolf.

He was enormous, his thick fur gleaming beneath the lights as he prowled across the stage with
powerful, controlled movements. His paws struck the polished floor without a sound, yet there was
something terrifyingly captivating about the way he moved.
The woman spun away from him.
The wolf followed.
And suddenly, the performance became something else entirely.
It was part dance, part story.
More performers joined them-some shifting between their wolf and human forms while others
remained human, their movements weaving around one another with impossible precision. A wolf would leap through the air, only for a human performer to catch the rhythm of the movement and
continue the story with a graceful spin. The transitions between human and wolf felt almost
seamless, like watching two worlds collide and somehow become one.
It was beautiful.
Wild.
Dangerous.
The music rose, and the wolves moved alongside the humans as though they understood every beat.
There was no fear in the dancers’ movements, only trust. One woman ran toward a wolf, her hand
brushing against his thick fur before she spun away, and moments later, he shifted into his human form and caught her around the waist.
My eyes widened slightly.
“Okay,” I murmured, unable to hide my smile. “This is actually amazing.”
Karla hummed in agreement.
And you were ready to leave?
I was curious.
You’re nosy.
I ignored her.

Still, I couldn’t deny how good of a mood I was in.
Maybe it was the performance.
Maybe it was the food.

Or maybe the thought of Logan dealing with the consequences of Celine’s actions somewhere outside
this restaurant was simply too satisfying to ruin.
All because of his precious sweetheart.
They were probably already on their way back home.
And here I was, sitting in one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen, eating incredible food while watching a performance I hadn’t expected to enjoy.
Then Lucian’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.
“You’re in a very good mood today.”
I turned toward him.
“I am.”
He studied me for a moment, his expression still calm.
“What’s the occasion?”
I looked back at the stage as another pair of performers moved across it.
“Let’s just say I’m exactly where I want to be right now.”
Because I was.
Everything was falling into place.
At least, for now.
“Where’s that?”
I looked at him again, surprised.
Someone was curious.
Karla, please, I muttered inwardly.
I didn’t say anything.

But I could practically hear the smugness in her voice.

Lucian was still watching me, and under his gaze, I suddenly became aware of just how close he was.
He was beautiful.
There was no other word for it.
Even sitting there with that irritatingly calm expression, Lucian looked unfairly attractive. His features
were sharp enough to look almost sculpted-the strong line of his jaw, the straight bridge of his nose, and those dark eyes that seemed capable of stripping away every lie I told.
And his lips…
I quickly looked away.
Absolutely not.
I wasn’t going to sit here admiring the Alpha of Blackwood Pack.
Especially not when I had enough problems in my life already.
“Here,” I said. “In Sovereign.”
It was a lie.
Not entirely, but close enough.
There was no way I was going to tell him anything about my mating life and the disaster it had
become without my permission.
“Your pack is beautiful,” I added quickly, changing the subject.
Lucian’s gaze lingered on me for another second before he looked ahead.
“I’m glad you find it appealing.”
His voice was deep and smooth, and I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes at how effortlessly he said
everything.
Of course he had a voice like that too.
I smiled and leaned back in my chair.
“I can’t believe I’m treating you without spending a single penny.”
For the first time, something shifted in his expression.

It was small.
So small that I almost missed it.
But the corner of his mouth moved.
Almost a smile.
Almost.
“It’s one of the privileges of being the Alpha,” he said.
I nodded thoughtfully.
“Specifically, the Alpha of your pack.”
Something that looked suspiciously like satisfaction flickered across his face.
Pride.
He was proud of Blackwood.
I could see it even though he quickly hid it behind that composed expression of his.
“But you don’t get everything complimentary,” I teased.
“I don’t get anything complimentary,” he corrected. “Like I said, it’s a privilege.”
I hummed, pretending to understand.
My attention returned to the stage.

The performance had become even more breathtaking. Wolves circled the dancers while the humans moved through them, their elaborate costumes flowing with every turn. The fabric caught the light
beautifully, designed to make every movement seem larger, more dramatic. Feathers, embroidery, shimmering details-everything worked together to transform the dancers into characters rather than
simply performers.
“Their costumes are amazing,” I said. “Whoever designed them is incredibly talented.”
“Seraphina.”
I glanced at Lucian. “Hm?”
“Seraphina,” he repeated. “Seraphina Blackwood designed the costumes.”
“Oh.”

My gaze returned to the stage, appreciating them even more.
Then Lucian spoke again.
“I heard you’ve met her.”
