My head was burning.
That was the only way I could describe it. It felt as though something inside me had been set on fire and was slowly consuming every rational thought I had left. I couldn’t think straight. I couldn’t even breathe properly without feeling like my chest was being crushed beneath the weight of everything that had happened.
By the time we boarded the flight back to Silvercrest Pack, I had already stopped trying to make sense
of it.
Yes.
We flew back that night.
The flight was barely two hours and thirty minutes, but it felt endless.
I hadn’t said a single word since we left the restaurant
Not one.
Celine didn’t dare speak to me either.
Neither did Anaya.
The silence around us wasn’t peaceful. It was suffocating. Heavy. Everyone knew I was hanging by a
thread, and that something as small as the wrong word-or even the wrong look-could make me snap
again.
Because I could feel it.
That anger sitting beneath my skin.
Waiting.
Growing.
By the time we got out of the car in front of my parents’ house, my hands were clenched so tightly that
my nails were digging into my palms.
Celine stood a few feet away from me, staring desperately at her phone.

Again and again, she tried to contact Meade Alder.
Her fingers moved frantically across the screen, calling, messaging, refreshing the page, searching for anything that could give her a way back to him.
But there was nothing.
He had blocked her.
Deleted the account.
Vanished.
I watched her from the corner of my eye.
I deliberately said nothing about what she was doing. Not because I didn’t care, but because I knew exactly how close I was to losing control. One wrong thing from her and-
I didn’t even want to think about it.
Still, somewhere beneath all that rage, I found myself almost hoping she would say something.
Anything.
Give me a reason.
Give me somewhere to put all this anger before it tore me apart from the inside.
And then she did exactly what I had been waiting for.
“He was a fraud… I was actually scammed?!”
Celine’s voice rose sharply as panic turned into rage. Before anyone could stop her, she hurled her
phone to the ground.
The sharp crack of the screen shattering cut through the quiet night.
“Logan, shall we call the pack hacker? This is a scam! If only we can catch this fraudster-”
“What’s the point of calling the hacker now?!” I roared.
She flinched,
Her mouth fell open slightly,
“We need to do-”
“Shut up!”

The slap cracked across her face.

Celine stumbled sideways, her hand flying to her cheek as she stared at me in complete shock.
Woah, Fenrir commented
My chest rose and fell violently.
For a second, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Celine slowly sank to the ground.
A sob escaped her.
And another.
I stared at her.
The sound should have made me feel guilty.
And at first, it did.
A small, ugly flicker of regret twisted inside me as realized how far I’d gone. She was sitting on the ground, crying, her cheek red from my hand.
But then she raised her face.
Almost as though she wanted me to see what I’d done to her.
And all I saw was what she had done to me.
To us.
She had destroyed something that was supposed to be the biggest breakthrough of my

life.
The chance to make Silvercrest one of the strongest and most powerful packs there was.
She had turned what should have been my triumph into a disaster.
And worst of all, she had disgraced me in front of nearly every Alpha in Blackwood.

Not just there.
Online too.
Everyone had seen it.
Everyone had watched me fall.
The regret inside me disappeared.
It was swallowed whole by something darker.
Something bitter.
Hatred.
“I’ve staked all my money on this project,” I said.
My voice came out hoarse.
“All of it.”

The words echoed around me, and suddenly, the full weight of them crashed down on my shoulders.
I felt powerless.
Completely powerless.
There was no clever solution.
No person I could call to fix this.
No amount of anger could undo the humiliation I had suffered or bring back the money I had thrown
into that project.
No one could save me from what had happened to my pack.
To my name.
I lifted my hand again.
For one terrible second, I wanted to slap her.
Hard.
But I forced my arm back down.
My entire body trembled with the effort.

We were standing outside my parents’ house the only place I could think of going when everything
else had fallen apart.
If anyone could help me, it had to be my father.
I knew he would probably call Evander.
Ava’s father had influence. Connections. Power.
But even I knew the truth before the phone call was ever made.
Evander was powerless this time.
There was absolutely nothing he could do.
“I’ve invested almost everything I had into that project,” I repeated.
This time, I said it louder.
For Celine.
She shifted backward.
I moved toward her.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
And for some reason, seeing her cry only made the rage inside me burn hotter.
“Stop crying!” I yelled.
She sobbed harder.
Then I heard Anaya crying too.
I didn’t even look at her.
I couldn’t.
I moved toward Celine again, my fists clenching at my sides.
But I stopped myself.
I couldn’t hit her again.
Not because I had forgiven her.
I hadn’t.

Lsimply knew that if I touched her again, I might not be able to stop myself from taking out every ounce of my frustration on the person standing in front of me.
So I shut my eyes.
Drew in a long, shaking breath.
And turned away from both Celine and Anaya before walking into the house.
The moment I stepped inside, my mother rose from where she had been sitting.
“Logan-”
I didn’t hear the rest.
I walked past her and dropped onto the nearest chair.
My body felt heavy.
My mind was spinning so violently that I couldn’t hold on to a single thought.
My mother was talking.
Someone else was moving around.
But the voices had become nothing more than distant noise.
My head was blank.
Completely blank.
The only thing that eventually surfaced through that emptiness was one thought.
One regret.
I never should have given Celine a project that important.
I should have given it to Ava.
Ava had never disappointed me.
Not once.
But you said Celine’s plan was better, Fenrir said, his voice filled with displeasure.
My jaw tightened,
I ignored him.

My nostrils flared as I tried to keep myself together.
Then-
A scream.
I snapped back to reality.
My eyes flew open.
My mother was standing in front of Celine.
No.
She was shouting at her.
Her entire body shook with fury.
“You stupid girl!” my mother screamed.
Celine shrank back.
“I knew it was a mistake adopting you into a family like this!”
Then my mother lunged at her.
Celine cried out as my mother began hitting her.
Again.
And again.
The sound filled the room, mixed with Celine’s sobs and Anaya’s terrified crying.

“Please don’t hit Mommy!” Anaya cried, rushing forward and wrapping both arms around my mother’s leg. “Grandma, please! Stop hitting Mommy!”
My mother barely seemed to hear her.
She was consumed by rage.
Each blow came with another curse, another accusation, another bitter word about Celine being bad
luck.
And I….
I just sat there.

I didn’t tell my mother to stop.
I didn’t step between them,
I watched.

No desire to protect Celine from the consequences of something I believed she had caused.
I sat on the sofa looking completely disheveled, my clothes rumpled from the journey, my hair a mess,
my entire body feeling as though I’d been dragged through the worst night of my life.
My father eventually walked toward me.
His face was grim.
Tired.
And before he even spoke, I knew.
“I was just on the phone with Evander,” he said.
I looked up at him.
He sighed before sitting down beside me.
“There’s nothing he can do.”
I closed my eyes.
A breath left me.
Slow.
Heavy.
Defeated.
Of course there wasn’t.

“Just because you’ve gone bankrupt doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world,” Dad said.
He tried to sound encouraging.”
But I could hear it in his voice.
He didn’t believe his own words.
Not completely.
“You can still make a comeback.”
I stared ahead.
His words drifted past me.
Comeback.
Recovery.
Hope.
They all sounded so distant.
So meaningless.
I felt numb.
My father continued talking, but I barely heard him. My mind had retreated somewhere far away, somewhere quiet, because facing the truth of what had happened felt impossible.
Then one sentence finally broke through.
“By the way, with such a big problem we’re facing in this pack…” Dad paused.
My eyes slowly shifted toward him.
“Why haven’t I seen Ava?”
