Chapter 55

AVA’S POINT OF VIEW

After we finished our meal and the performance finally came to an end, the restaurant slowly began to empty. Guests drifted toward the exit in small groups, their voices fading beneath the soft music that still played in the background. Yet I remained seated across from Lucian, in no particular hurry to

leave.

I found myself watching him instead.

His expression was as composed as ever, almost unreadable, as the glow from his phone reflected faintly against his face. His fingers moved across the screen, typing a reply, and there was something subtle in his demeanor that caught my attention.

He looked… pleased.

Not that Lucian ever smiled broadly or made his emotions easy to read, but I had spent enough time around him to notice the small differences. The faint ease in his eyes. The way his shoulders seemed

less tense.

Whatever he had read on that phone had clearly put him in a good mood.

“You seem to be in a good mood too,” I said.

Lucian lifted his gaze from his phone and looked at me.

I waited for him to deny it, or perhaps give me one of those vague responses he seemed so fond of,

but instead, he simply nodded.

“I am.”

A smile spread across my face.

“Is it because a beautiful girl like me is having dinner with you?”

I meant it as a joke, expecting him to dismiss it with that calm, almost indifferent expression of his

Instead, he nodded again.

“Yes.”

My smile slowly faded.

I stared at him.

For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.

Lucian remained perfectly calm, as though he hadn’t just answered my teasing question without hesitation. Meanwhile, my mind was suddenly working much harder than it needed to.

I looked away, rubbing my fingers together beneath the table.

“Although…” I began, my voice quieter than before. “This is probably a bit of a mood killer to say at a

time like this, but I still feel like I should remind you that I’m already mated.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

I wasn’t sure why I suddenly felt the need to say it. Perhaps it was because the entire evening had felt

strangely intimate. Dining with an Alpha in a place like this, surrounded by soft music and expensive decorations, while most of the restaurant gradually emptied around us…

It could easily have looked like a date.

And romance was the last thing I wanted to pursue right now.

Not when my life was already complicated enough.

Besides, I knew Lucian probably didn’t have any romantic feelings toward me. At least, I hoped I

wasn’t reading too much into a simple dinner.

“I know.”

His response was as calm and indifferent as ever.

I glanced back at him.

Of course he knew.

For a brief moment, silence settled between us. It wasn’t uncomfortable, though. The kind of silence. that pressed against your chest and demanded to be filled. It simply existed between us, strangely peaceful.

Then Lucian spoke again.

“Does being friends with me bother you?”

His voice was low and smooth, but he didn’t immediately look at me. His attention remained fixed ahead, his expression composed as though the question meant nothing more than discussing the weather.

I blinked.

“No, not at all.

I smiled and reached for my phone, glancing down at the screen.

Definitely not at all, Karla teased.

I could practically feel the amusement in her voice.

And I knew for a fact that if Karla had the chance, she wouldn’t be sitting here quietly pretending not to

be affected. She would probably flirt with Alpha Lucian without an ounce of shame.

I tried not to smile at the thought.

Lucian had also discovered that I knew Seraphina, his sister, and I hadn’t bothered denying it. Seraphina was charming, and I had genuinely enjoyed meeting her. It made sense that I was curious about her, so I eventually asked Lucian if she was here.

He told me she hadn’t come to the restaurant.

I had wanted to ask why. This place was beautiful, and I couldn’t imagine why someone wouldn’t want to experience an evening like this, especially when they would undoubtedly be treated with the highest

level of hospitality.

But I stopped myself.

I had already asked enough questions for one night.

So, I kept quiet and let it go.

After glancing around the restaurant again, I realized it was probably time for us to leave. I waited for

Lucian to stand, but he didn’t seem to be in any hurry.

I looked at him.

Then waited.

And waited a little longer.

Lucian remained completely relaxed.

Eventually, I gave in.

“Do you think we should start going?”

He turned toward me.

“Okay,” he said simply.

I stood up and gathered my bags, only to realize that several guards had suddenly appeared around us. I hadn’t even noticed where they had come from.

They moved with quiet precision, surrounding us without drawing unnecessary attention. As we walked toward the exit, they followed close behind, their presence making it very clear that Lucian was

not someone who could simply walk around without protection.

Once outside, one of the guards opened the car door.

I glanced at Lucian.

Get in, Karla urged.

I rolled my eyes inwardly and climbed into the car.

As soon as I settled into my seat, I looked toward Lucian.

“We’re going back to your packhouse, right?”

He looked at me.

“Where else do you think?”

Heat crept into my cheeks.

I smiled awkwardly, suddenly realizing how strange the question must have sounded.

Then Lucian spoke again.

“If it makes you feel any safer, yes. We’re heading back to the packhouse.”

I smiled, but I hadn’t asked because I was afraid of him.

I trusted Lucian.

I had been living with him for some time now, and he had never done anything to make me feel

unsafe. If anything, he had gone out of his way to make sure I was comfortable.

I doubted he would suddenly do anything suspicious.

So I leaned back against my seat and closed my eyes, allowing myself to enjoy the rest of the drive.

By the time we arrived at the packhouse, I was beginning to feel tired.

A quard opened the car door for me, and I stepped out, adjusting my bags in my hands. I was already turning toward the private room Lucian had given me when I heard my name.

“Avery.”

Something in his voice made me stop.

I paused in the middle of my step as the cool night breeze swept past me, sending a faint shiver down

my spine.

Slowly, I turned around.

At first, my eyes went to Lucian.

Then I noticed someone else.

Someone was walking toward the packhouse.

Not just a man.

A wolf.

Even from a distance, I could feel it.

The aura around him was cold and heavy, carrying the unmistakable presence of someone powerful.

He moved without urgency, each step calm and measured, yet there was something about him that

made the space around him seem quieter.

His eyes briefly met mine.

Cold.

Piercing.

They swept over me with an unreadable expression, and for some reason, I felt as though he could see

far more than I wanted him to.

I couldn’t hear what Lucian was saying anymore.

My attention had shifted completely.

The stranger continued into the packhouse, his presence lingering behind him like a chill in the air. He

didn’t need to raise his voice or make a show of his authority. It was simply there.

Strong.

Undeniable.

Then he walked closer and held something out toward me.

“The keys.”

I blinked before realizing what he meant.

“Oh.”

A small, embarrassed smile tugged at my lips as I walked toward him and took the keys.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “It was rude of me to just walk off like that without saying thank you.”

Lucian raised a brow.

I held the keys a little tighter.

“Thank you for dinner.”

For a moment, it looked as though he wanted to say something.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he simply nodded.

“Thank you for treating me.”

I opened my mouth, ready to respond, when another voice cut through the quiet.

“Alpha.”

I turned.

Another man was approaching.

The moment I saw him, I felt it.

That same cold aura.

Not identical to the wolf who had entered the packhouse earlier, but similar enough to make my skin

prickle.

He walked toward Lucian with an unnerving calmness, his footsteps steady against the ground. There

was no unnecessary movement, no hesitation. His entire demeanor was controlled and restrained, yet

something about him made me instinctively straighten.

When he reached Lucian, his attention shifted toward me.

And stayed there.

His gaze was sharp.

Cold.

It traveled over me slowly, as though he were silently studying me, trying to figure out exactly who I

was and why I was standing beside his Alpha.

I suddenly became painfully aware of myself.

The way he looked at me made my fingers tighten around the keys.

Then, to my surprise, something faint flickered in his eyes.

Amusement.

It was gone almost as quickly as it appeared, leaving me wondering if I had imagined it.

I looked away from his piercing gaze.

Lucian glanced between us before speaking.

“Let me introduce you to my Beta, Draven.
