When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the blurred ceiling of the plane.
For a few seconds, I had no idea where was.
Then everything came rushing back.
The flight. Blackwood Pack, Lucian.
And Lucian’s shoulder.
My eyes widened.
I had fallen asleep by the window. I distinctly remembered leaning against it, exhausted enough that I barely noticed when sleep pulled me under.
So how exactly had I woken up with my head resting against Lucian’s shoulder?
Slowly, almost afraid to look, I lifted my gaze.
His profile came into view.
Lucian was staring ahead, his expression as calm/and unreadable as ever. The harsh lines of his face softened beneath the dim cabin lights, making him look almost unfairly charming.
For a moment, I simply stared at him.
Then embarrassment hit me.
I had spent so much time reminding Lucian that I already had a mate while we were in Blackwood
Pack.
Yet the moment we boarded the plane, I had somehow ended up sleeping on his shoulder.
Great.
Wouldn’t that make him think I was playing hard to get?
Oh, it definitely will, Karla said smugly.
I resisted the urge to groan.
Maybe I was thinking too much.

My relationship with Lucian had moved far too quickly for my liking. One moment, he had been a stranger I met by chance, and the next, we were living under the same roof and traveling together.
It was strange.
Confusing.
And apparently, comfortable enough for me to fall asleep on him..
I straightened slightly, only then realizing how close our faces were.
Lucian turned his eyes toward me.
His gaze was deep and beautiful, but just as impossible to read as always.
There was no irritation in his eyes. No accusation. No amusement.
Nothing that told me he had misunderstood the situation.
And somehow, that made me even more curious.
“I’m sorry,” I murmured, quickly pulling away. “You could have pushed me away.”
“It wasn’t necessary.”
That was it.
Three words.
Brief. Calm. Indifferent.
As if I had merely leaned against an empty wall instead of him.
I blinked before deciding to let it go.
Since Lucian clearly wasn’t making a big deal out of it, neither would I.
At least, I would try not to.
As we walked out of the airport, I turned toward him.
“Thank you.”
I hadn’t gotten the chance to meet his sister, Seraphina. I hadn’t even caught a glimpse of her back at Blackwood Pack. Maybe she had been away, or perhaps she simply hadn’t been around when we
arrived.

I had, however, met his Beta, Draven

Draven was calm, composed, and carried the same commanding presence that seemed to follow everyone close to Lucian. He wasn’t as cold as Lucian, though. He hadn’t spoken much, but he hadn’t
seemed unfriendly either.
And Blackwood Pack…
It was even more impressive than people said.
Everything about the place carried a sense of power. The facilities, the people, the atmosphere. There
was something strangely peaceful about it despite the strength that surrounded it.
It was beautiful.
Which only made one question continue circling through my mind.
Why wasn’t Lucian there?
Why had he left his own pack to follow me back here?
Why wasn’t an Alpha staying in his own territory?
For pack business, Karla chimed in.
For how long? I asked her.
But I immediately regretted asking.
I didn’t want to start overthinking Lucian again.
“Thank you for treating me,” I said instead. “Even though I was supposed to be the one treating you.”
“Then treat me to another meal when you have time.”
His answer came almost immediately.
Too immediately.
I stared at him.
Did he already have that prepared?
Karla practically squealed inside my head.
Another date with Mr. Mysterious!
Hmmm.

So, had he just arranged another date with me?
I had only been polite when I thanked him.

After everything that had happened, he had still saved me twenty million. It didn’t matter that he was
an Alpha or that money clearly meant nothing to him. He had helped me, and I believed gratitude was
necessary.
But I hadn’t exactly planned on inviting him out again.
Now that he had said it himself, though, refusing would feel unnecessarily rude.
“Sure,” I replied with a small smile, although I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about it.
I pulled out my phone and turned it on to check the time.
A few missed calls immediately appeared on the screen.
One of them was from Axel.
My expression darkened.
Why was he calling me?
He hated my guts.
And honestly, the feeling was mutual.
Besides, he knew the truth about Anaya.
He knew that she was Celine and Logan’s illegitimate daughter.
Even if Axel and I had never had a problem before, I certainly had one with him now.
The other missed call was from my father.
With a sigh, I called him back.
He answered almost immediately.
“What were you doing just now? Why was your phone off?”
His voice came through the receiver sharp and impatient.
Of course.
I lied without hesitation.

“My battery died. I only just got it charged.”
He didn’t question me further.

Instead, he went straight to the reason he had called.
“Your Aunt Greta is returning from Onyx Ridge Pack tomorrow. I’ve arranged for our in-laws to celebrate her discharge from the pack. Be there by noon,
I stared ahead.
Not a request.
A command.
“I’m not going.”
There was a brief silence.
Then Dad’s voice thundered through the phone.
“Nonsense!”
I pulled the phone slightly away from my ear.
“If you dare not come, I’ll cut off all your credit cards.”
The line went dead before I could reply.
I stared at my phone.
My fingers slowly tightened around it.
The veins at the back of my hand became visible as anger surged through me.
Of course.
That was always his answer.
Whenever I refused to obey him, he found a way to remind me exactly what power he held over me.
I climbed into the passenger seat of the car while Lucian placed our luggage in the back.
The moment he got behind the wheel, I waited.
I sat there, staring straight ahead, my blood practically boiling.
Any second now, he would ask what was wrong.

Lwould tell him everything.
Well, maybe not everything.
But enough.
One minute passed.
Then two.
Lucian started the car.
Still nothing.
I turned my head slightly.
He was focused on the road.
Serlously?
The entire drive home passed in silence.

By the time we pulled into the driveway, I was more annoyed with him than I had any right to be.
I remained in the passenger seat, my arms folded tightly across my chest.
Lucian switched off the engine.
Still nothing.
I finally snapped.
“Aren’t you going to ask me what I’m angry about?”
Lucian looked at me.
Actually, I wasn’t usually someone who enjoyed discussing my private problems with other people.
I hated feeling exposed.
I hated explaining myself.
But for some ridiculous reason, I had expected Lucian to ask.
And maybe that was what irritated me the most.
How could he sit there so calmly when I was practically radiating anger?

How did he notice everything and still somehow remain indifferent to people’s emotions?
He stared at me for a moment before speaking.
“Pardon me. What’s wrong?”
His voice was calm.
Almost painfully calm.
A bitter laugh slipped out of me.
That was it?
That was all he had to say?
I shook my head and immediately opened the car door.
Before he could say anything else, I grabbed my luggage and headed inside.
I unlocked the door and walked straight into the kitchen.
My throat felt dry.
Or maybe I was just trying to find something to do with my hands.
I opened the refrigerator, grabbed a bottle of water, and took several large gulps.
Where is he?
He’s so slow, Karla growled.
I frowned.
Why was I even waiting for him?
A few moments later, I heard the front door open.
Lucían walked inside with his luggage.
“Why did you walk out like that?”
His voice remained calm.
My lips parted.
Then suddenly, I felt stupid.
