Lhad been angry because he hadn’t asked what was wrong.
Then, when he finally did, I got offended by the way he asked.
What exactly was wrong with me?
Guilt crept in.
I couldn’t bring myself to explain.
I just shook my head.
“I’m sorry. I should go.”

I picked up my luggage and the bottle of water and walked toward the door before he could say
anything else.
And he didn’t even call me back.
Not once.
I stepped outside and shut the door behind me.
Gosh.

I deliberately arrived late the next day.
I already knew Logan’s family and mine would be there.
That was exactly why I had no intention of rushing.
I hadn’t even seen Lucian since I walked out of the house and left him sitting in the living room the day
before.
And honestly, I didn’t know what to say to him.
Not that I had time to think about Lucian now.
I had something far more annoying waiting for me.
I knew they were probably already seated, probably talking about me, probably complaining about how difficult I was.
So I took my time.
If they wanted to say stupid things about me, they could do it whether I arrived early or late.

When I finally entered the private room at Mistfalls, the first voice I heard was Greta’s.
“Oh, Avery, you’re finally here! If you hadn’t come, the food would have gotten cold.”
I looked at her.

Her face was stretched into that familiar fake smile, the kind that always made my skin crawl.
I sneered.
“You didn’t wait for me anyway, so of course the leftovers are cold.”
I rolled my eyes as I walked further into the room.
Greta’s smile stiffened almost immediately.
Good.
“You were the one who was late, and you still have the nerve to say that?”
Dad’s angry voice cut through the room.
I turned toward him.
Unlike everyone else who seemed to shrink whenever Dad raised his voice, I simply looked him directly
in the eye.
No fear.
No apology.
“It’s already a favor that I came,” I said. “If you’re unhappy about it, I can leave.”
“Ava…”
Dad barely had time to continue before Alaric stood.
“Alright, alright. We’re all family,” he said quickly, attempting to calm the growing tension. “Ava is here
now. Let’s sit down and have a good meal together.”
Dad’s jaw tightened,
For the sake of our in-laws, he swallowed whatever else he had wanted to say.
“If it weren’t for our guests,” he muttered, “I would definitely teach you a lesson.”
I rolled my eyes right in front of him.

Then I took iny seat.
The atmosphere around the table immediately became strange.
Heavy.

Everyone in the family knew Greta and could barely stand to be in the same room together.
She was my father’s second mate.
My stepmother.
And, in my opinion, the woman who had destroyed whatever was left of our family.
I understood that Dad had the right to find happiness again after my mother passed away.
That wasn’t what I hated.
What I hated was Greta.
Because before my mother died, Dad had already been having an improper relationship with her.
Then, barely a day after my mother passed away, Dad and Greta announced their mating ceremony.
And nobody had stopped them.
Dad was an elder of the pack I grew up in, Shadowmere Pack. The Alpha hadn’t cared enough to question him, and everyone else had simply watched as Greta went from being the woman Dad secretly saw behind my mother’s back to becoming his official mate.
I hated Dad too, but not nearly as much as I hated Greta.
The private room was crowded, yet strangely quiet.
Then Celine spoke.
Her eyes moved over me slowly, taking in my outfit.
“Luna Ava,” she said casually, “you look so casual.”
I glanced down at myself.
Of everyone at the table, I was probably dressed the most plainly.
I wore a simple top, black jeans, and boots.
Nothing special.

Meanwhile, everyone else looked like they were attending some kind of formal celebration.
Greta might have been perfectly healthy now, but she had just returned from Onyx Ridge Pack, and Dad had organized an unnecessarily grand celebration for her recovery.
Naturally, Logan’s family had dressed for the occasion.
After hearing Celine’s comment, Dad finally looked at what I was wearing.
His expression darkened.
“Outrageous.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“So what if I’m dressed inappropriately?”
I couldn’t care less.
I hadn’t come to impress anyone.
Isla immediately seized the opportunity.
“Ava has even more outrageous behavior than that.”
Her voice was coated in sarcasm.
Dad slowly turned toward her.
His face grew grim.
“What are you talking about?”

AVA’S POINT OF VIEW D
Alaric immediately shot Isla a look.
It was far too obvious to miss.

Dad’s brows drew together as his gaze moved between them, suspicion already beginning to darken
his expression. He had never been the type to sit quietly when he believed something was being kept
from him.
“Could it be that Ava has done something outrageous again?” he asked.
His eyes settled on Alaric.
“Alaric, we’ve been through thick and thin together. Avery is my daughter. If she’s made a mistake, you don’t have to hide it from me.”
A familiar sense of irritation curled quietly inside me.
Of course.
Before anyone had even said what happened, Dad had already decided I must have done something
wrong.
Alaric shifted slightly in his seat, wearing that uncomfortable expression people put on when they
wanted to pretend they were reluctant to expose someone while secretly enjoying every second of it.
“It’s not really a mistake,” he began carefully. “It’s just… there might have been some
misunderstanding.”
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
My attention barely shifted.
Alaric unlocked the screen, opened a picture, and handed the phone to Dad.
The moment Dad saw it, something in his expression changed.
His brows furrowed.
“This is…”
“It was taken by a very famous photographer,” Alaric explained. “He probably saw the scene by chance while he was eating, thought it looked beautiful, and casually snapped a picture. He uploaded it to his

He was taking his sweet time getting to the point.
Dad, surprisingly, didn’t interrupt him. He simply stared at the picture and waited.

“The important part,” Alaric finally continued, “is that this was taken at Sovereign Restaurant in
Blackwood Pack.”
The room seemed to freeze.
Then Dad turned toward me so abruptly that I almost rolled my eyes.
“Explain yourself clearly. What were you doing in Blackwood Pack with a man?”
I didn’t even bother looking up.
“Eating.”
The single word left my lips with such casual indifference that Dad’s face darkened immediately.
I leaned back slightly in my chair, completely unmoved by the way everyone suddenly seemed to be watching me as though I had committed some unforgivable crime.
Dad slammed his palm against the table.
The sharp sound cracked through the room.
I blinked slowly.
Still not impressed.
From beside him, Greta tilted her head, her eyes widening with exaggerated curiosity.
“Sovereign?” she asked. “Isn’t that the super-popular restaurant where all the wealthy people go? I heard the minimum spending there is ridiculously expensive. Doesn’t a single meal cost tens of
millions?”
A quiet, humorless laugh almost escaped me.
Karla practically rolled her eyes inside my head.
Oh, please.
Since being officially acknowledged by Dad, Greta had spent almost every waking moment surrounding herself with wealthy socialites and influential people. She knew perfectly well how
expensive Sovereign Restaurant was.

So why was she suddenly acting like she’d only just heard about the place?
Why ask a question when you already knew the answer?
Because she wanted everyone else to hear it.

“That’s right,” Gu Wanning immediately chimed in, seizing the opportunity. “Luna Ava spent twenty million to treat a man she met at a bar to dinner.”
She even gave the exact figure.
Dad’s gaze snapped toward her.
Gu Wanning straightened almost immediately.
“I’m not lying,” she said quickly. “We saw it with our own eyes that day. Isn’t that right, Logan?”
Everyone looked toward Logan.
He remained silent.
His silence stretched through the room.
And, naturally, Dad took it as confirmation.
I watched the entire thing unfold with an almost unbearable sense of boredom.
For a moment, Dad said nothing. He simply stared at me.
The disappointment in his eyes was supposed to make me feel guilty.
Instead, all I felt was tired.
“I told you to stay away from that Nyxelle girl,” he finally said, his voice heavy with anger. “But you wouldn’t listen. And now you’re taking things even further? Spending twenty million on a man?”
“Evander, don’t be too angry,” Alaric said smoothly. “Ava is still young. Young people make mistakes.”
My eyes slowly shifted toward him.
A bitter smile almost touched my lips.
His words sounded like an attempt to defend me.
But they weren’t.
They were simply another way of declaring me guilty.

But standing there and listening to him now, I realized how wrong I had been.
He’s nothing more than a scumbag, Karla finished for me.
I almost smiled.
Exactly.
“I was thanking him for helping me,” I said coldly. “So I treated Kim to dinner.”
My voice remained calm, almost bored.
As though I truly didn’t have the energy to sit there and defend myself against a crime that existed only in their imaginations.
Originally, I had considered telling them who Lucian really was.
Telling them that he wasn’t simply some random man I had met at a bar.
He was the Alpha of Blackwood Pack.
But then I looked around the table.
None of them had ever met him.
How would they even know what the Alpha of Blackwood looked like?
A faint amusement curled through me.
The man they were so eager to look down on was the very person who could potentially become more valuable to their pack than anyone sitting at this table.
I almost laughed.
But I swallowed it.
No.
I wouldn’t tell them.
They could find out the hard way.
“And what exactly did he do for you that made you spend twenty million on a meal?” Celine asked.

I turned toward her.
Then I smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
The smile barely touched my lips as I looked at her with quiet dismissal.
“I’m spending the savings my mother left me before she passed away. It’s not marital property, so I
can spend as much as I want.”
I paused deliberately,
“Besides, even if it were marital property, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with you, Celine.”
Her mouth opened.
“-”
“But since you brought it up,” I continued before she could finish, “I should ask you something.”
My gaze moved briefly toward Logan.
“That day, when Logan treated you and Anaya to dinner at Sovereign Restaurant, was the money he used from our joint marital property?”
Celine’s lips parted again.
But this time, nothing came out.
Silence settled heavily over the table.
No one seemed to know what to say,
I watched Dad’s gaze shift slowly between Logan and Celine.
The atmosphere immediately became awkward.
And apparently, Alaric couldn’t stand it.
“Oh, right,” he suddenly said, turning toward Dad. “Evander, do you remember the new herb I
mentioned to you before?”
Just like that, the subject changed.
Dad’s attention shifted.

I sat quietly as they began discussing business, and just like that, Sovereign Restaurant was forgotten.
This dinner was supposed to celebrate Greta’s discharge from Onyx Ridge Pack.
Yet somehow, by the end of it, Alaric was the one who had gained the most.
Later, after Logan and his family finally left, I found myself standing alone with Dad.
The living room had grown quiet.
Too quiet.
I stood in front of him with my arms crossed over my chest, watching him carefully.
“Da’d, the greener herb we cultivate for the pack is incredibly rare.”
My voice was serious now.
“So many packs have offered us a fortune for even a small supply, and you refused every single one of
them.”
I paused.
“So why did you agree to give it to Logan’s family so easily this time?”
Dad’s face hardened.
Then his palm crashed against the table.
“How dare you ask me that?”
I didn’t flinch.
“I did all of this for you!”
“For me?” I repeated.
“If you take a man out and someone photographs you, and your in-laws come knocking on my door questioning what you’re doing, how am I supposed to compensate Logan’s family for the loss of face if I don’t give up the exclusive greener herb?”
I stared at him.
For a second, I couldn’t even find the words.

Of course.
Of course Dad had done something like that.

“Does this mean I’m not allowed to go out and eat with men simply because I’m mated?”
“You’re a Luna, Ava,” he snapped. “Don’t ask me stupid questions.”
His dismissal was so effortless that I simply stood there, staring at him.
And something inside me slowly went quiet.
There was no point.
Dad and I were speaking two completely different languages.
The person who had cheated on his mate, gotten involved with his adopted sister, and had an illegitimate daughter was Logan.
Yet somehow, in Dad’s eyes, I was the one who constantly needed to prove my loyalty.
I was the one being watched.
I was the one being accused of betrayal simply because I had dinner with another man.
“Dad,” I said, my voice tightening despite myself, “you accuse me of spending too much money on another man, but have you ever considered that Logan spent the same amount treating Celine and Anaya?”
I stared directly at him.
I wasn’t saying it openly.
Not yet.
But I was giving him enough to think about.
Enough to question whether Logan’s relationship with Celine and Anaya was truly as innocent as everyone wanted to believe.
Dad went silent.
For several long seconds, his expression became distant, as though he was actually considering my words.

“Celine is Logan’s sister,” Dad said at last. “And she’s the widow of his best friend. It’s only natural for him to treat her and her daughter well.”
The tiny spark inside me died immediately.
“What if I said-”
“Ava is still too childish.”
Greta’s voice cut through mine.
I turned sharply.
She swayed into the living room with that irritating confidence of hers before dropping onto the sofa
beside Dad.
Her lips curved.
“She always thinks that if she slanders Logan in front of you, she can justify going to nightclubs and
associating with shady men.”
My jaw tightened.
Not because her words hurt.
Because I was exhausted.
Exhausted by the same accusations.
The same twisted logic.
The same people speaking as though they knew my life better than I did.
Dad immediately pointed at me.
“Let me tell you something, Ava, Give up on that idea right now. I watched Logan grow up, and I trust
his character-”
That was enough.
I turned around.

Nonsense, Karla muttered, disgust thick in her voice.

“Where are you going?” Dad roared behind me.
I kept walking.
“I haven’t finished speaking yet! Come back here!”
His voice followed me through the house.
But I didn’t slow down.
I didn’t turn around.
And I certainly didn’t look back.
Because I genuinely couldn’t care less about what any of them had to say.
