Chapter 61
AVA’S POINT OF VIEWG
Logan’s sudden outburst caught Nyx off guard.
For a second, she simply stared at him, her brows drawn together in confusion. Then realization slowly
dawned on her face.
They went to a hotel.
It seemed Logan still believed Lucian was nothing more than a bartender working at Nyx’s shop. And
because he hadn’t found me there, his mind had immediately leaped to the conclusion that Lucian and I had disappeared together.
To a hotel.
Stupid of him to think that, Karla snarled.
I had been standing quietly by the doorway the entire time, watching the exchange unfold. The
moment Logan demanded to know which hotel we had supposedly gone to, I knew exactly what Nyx
was going to do.
Knowing her, there was no way she would let an opportunity to get under his skin pass her by.
So, I stayed where I was and prepared myself for the show.
“You really have a broad mind, Alpha,” Nyx mocked, folding her arms across her chest.
She stood directly in front of Logan, staring him straight in the eye with the kind of confidence that came from knowing he couldn’t touch her.
And because he couldn’t, she pushed even further.
“In fact, I’m not telling you where they are. You can do whatever you want.”
Logan’s jaw tightened.
The muscles in his face flexed as his expression darkened, and for a moment, he looked as though he
was only one wrong word away from completely losing control. Then, much to my surprise, he shut his eyes and drew in a slow breath.
When he opened them again, his anger had been carefully buried.
“Nyxelle,” he said, his voice noticeably calmer, “you’re Ava’s best friend. I won’t hold this against you. Just tell me where Ava is right now.”

The sudden shift in his attitude made Nyx scrunch up her face.
Apparently, even she hadn’t expected him to restrain himself so quickly.
Then a mischievous glint appeared in her eyes.

“I don’t know where Ava is,” she said casually. “She doesn’t need to report to me whenever she takes a
man to a hotel.”
“What the fuck do you mean by that?”
Logan slammed his palm against the table so hard that the sound cracked through the room.
Nyx looked far too pleased with herself.
A smile tugged at my lips as I shook my head from where I stood.
Since I was divorcing Logan anyway, I honestly couldn’t care less what he thought about my
reputation anymore.
Nyx, on the other hand, seemed more than willing to take advantage of that fact.
Instead of clearing things up, she exaggerated whatever relationship she believed Logan imagined I
had with Lucian, watching with obvious satisfaction a’s Logan’s face gradually turned red with anger.
I decided to step in before she pushed him so far that he actually ran mad.
“What are you talking about?”
My voice cut through the room.
Both of them turned.
Logan’s eyes widened the moment he saw me,
For a second, he looked as though he’d seen a ghost.
Then his gaze immediately moved past me, searching the space behind my shoulders as though he
expected someone else to walk through the door at any moment.
I rolled my eyes.
Of course.
He was looking for Lucian.
Nyx’s lips curved into a smirk before she quickly rearranged her expression into one of exaggerated

surprise.
“What brings you here?” she asked sweetly.
I smiled back at her.

“If I hadn’t come, were you planning to start spreading rumors that I disappeared to a hotel with a
man?”
Nyx pouted, clearly disappointed that I had interrupted her fun.
Still, when she glanced at Logan, satisfaction flashed through her eyes. She might have stopped before driving him completely insane, but she had clearly enjoyed every second of making him furious.
Why is he so angry, anyway? Karla rolled her eyes inside my head. I thought Celine was the one he
loved.
“He’s worthless,” I muttered inwardly.
Karla immediately agreed.
Still, there was one thing I understood perfectly well.
A man’s pride and possessiveness would never allow him to stand quietly by while his mate appeared to be growing close to another man.
But he can do whatever he wants, Karla snapped, sounding even more irritated.
I refused to let myself become angry over Logan.
He wasn’t worth the energy.
“Now that the person you’re waiting for has arrived, I won’t disturb you two any longer.”
Nyx smiled and started toward the door. Halfway there, she suddenly stopped and turned around.
“I was just joking, Alpha. Don’t take it seriously.”
With that, she walked out completely.
Logan watched her leave with an expression so sour that I nearly laughed.
“Let’s go,” he said, frowning as he turned away.
I followed him, intending to question what had gotten into him, but he suddenly stopped and turned
around.

The question came with a strange note of uncertainty, as though he desperately wanted me to
reassure him.
“No,” I answered plainly.
Then we continued walking.
I thought that would be the end of it.
It wasn’t.
He asked me again.
And again.
And again.
By the time he had repeated the same question for what felt like the twelfth time, I was beginning to
wonder if something had happened to his brain.
Each time, I gave him the exact same answer.
No.
Eventually, when he asked again, I stopped walking and turned toward him.
“Logan, if you don’t believe me, then stop asking. Just pretend I went to a hotel with him. Is that okay?”
I didn’t wait for his response.
I turned and walked away.
Behind me, I heard his footsteps quicken.
“Ava, wait.”
I kept walking.
“I’m sorry.”
That made me pause.
“I was just… concerned about you.”
With my back to him, the corners of my lips curled coldly.

I almost turned around and spat the truth directly in his face.
You’re only concerned about the benefits I bring to your pack.
But I swallowed the words.
There was no point.
“Look, I know your dad scolded you today, and you must be in a bad mood, so I specially bought you a
gift.”
I slowly turned around.
Logan was holding out a shopping bag.
A bitter sneer threatened to rise to my lips as I took it from him.
“Like you don’t know why my dad scolded me.”
The words came out sharper than I intended.
Logan opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
For a moment, he simply stood there, as though he was reconsidering whatever he had been about to
say.
Then he decided to avoid the subject altogether.
“Let’s not talk about that anymore,” he said. “See if you like the gift I got you.”
Of course.
Change the subject.
Pretend the problem didn’t exist.
I didn’t bother pressing the matter. Instead, I opened the bag.
Inside was a silk scarf,
Karla made an offended sound in my head.
What exactly are we supposed to do with that?
I stared at it.

“So, do you like it?”

His eyes remained fixed on my face.
He wasn’t simply asking whether I liked the gift. He was studying me, carefully searching my expression for any sign that he had succeeded in pleasing me.
“Yeah.”
My answer came without hesitation.
The relief that immediately crossed his face almost made me roll my eyes.
He actually looked as though a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
I dropped the scarf back into the bag.
Apparently, he thought a piece of silk was enough to soften me.
Thinking he had successfully won me over, Logan stepped closer and fell into step beside me.
“Ava, I’m not going home tonight.”
I stopped walking.
“What?”
The question came out much sharper than I intended, and Logan looked at me in surprise.
“Haven’t you been staying at hotels or the packhouse lately because of Anaya?” he asked. “Tonight, I’m not going home to be with Anaya and Celine. I’m going to stay at the hotel with you.”
Then he smiled.
It was a gentle smile.
Soft.
Warm.
So carefully placed that, four years ago, it would have melted something inside me.
His eyes rested on me with what looked like deep affection, and for one brief, dangerous moment, I understood exactly why I had believed him for so long.
He was good at this.

Logan knew how to look at me as though I was the only woman in his world. He knew how to soften his voice, how to smile, how to make concern look like devotion.
Anyone watching us would have believed he loved me.
Maybe that was what made it hurt the most
Not because I still wanted his love.
I didn’t.
But because I had spent four years of my life mistaking that performance for something real.
Four years believing that this man loved me enough to be obsessed with me.
Four years allowing myself to feel grateful for crumbs that had apparently meant nothing.
So deceptive, I thought bitterly.
“Honey, you’re so considerate.’
A small smile appeared on my face.
I made sure it reached just far enough to look convincing.
Logan smiled back.
Idiot.
We continued walking, and I kept the faint smile on my face until the meaningless stroll began to irritate me.
“You should go home tonight,” I said. “I have to go to the packhouse and work overtime.”
His smile immediately faded.
“You’re going back to the pack?”
Duh.
“Yes,” I replied bluntly.
Logan glanced toward the pack before looking back at me.
“It’s already late, Ava. I don’t think you should go back to the pack at this time of night.”

His voice was gentle.
Almost too gentle.
Too caring.

I stared at him.
We were still inside Mooncrest Pack, and honestly, I had been planning to go home from here. But with Logan suddenly pretending to be the perfect, concerned mate, slipping away was becoming more complicated than I had expected.
“I know it’s late,” I said. “But after all, it was Celine who made you go bankrupt.”
The change in his expression was immediate.
“And now the healers and injured wolves in this pack are the ones suffering because of it.”
His face tightened.
I smiled.
“Now we have to think of another way to save the pack after the last plan failed.”
I paused deliberately.
“That is, if anything can cover the damage Celine caused.”
Logan’s expression darkened further.
“But don’t worry.”
My smile widened.
“That’s why I’m your mate. To help you rise to the top.”
I tilted my head slightly, watching him closely.
“I can’t let the same mistake happen twice, can I?”
For a moment, Logan simply stared at me.
Then that look returned to his eyes.
That deep, warm affection.
The same carefully crafted tenderness that had fooled me for four years.
