“Logan,” I cut him off before he could say another word. “It’s already late I should get going.”
The finality in my voice left him with nothing to argue against.
For a moment, Logan simply stared at me. Then his expression softened, and he nodded.
“Let me walk you to where you can get a cab.”
“I can get there myself.”
My answer came out sharper than necessary, but I didn’t take it back. I was already tired of standing there, tired of his voice, tired of the strange tenderness he kept trying to wrap around me as though I couldn’t see right through it.
Logan shook his head gently.
“You’re going straight to work. You shouldn’t stress yourself too much.”
There it was again.
That careful voice.
That concerned expression.
As though he was some devoted mate worried about my well-being.
I stared at him for a moment, searching his face for something real, but all I could see was the same performance he had become so skilled at giving me.
“Okay,” I finally said.
His lips curved slightly, and he fell into step beside me.
L
The night breeze swept through the streets, cold enough to slip beneath my skin. I barely reacted to it, but Logan noticed immediately.
Of course he did.
Before I could move away, he had already taken off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.
“Be careful not to catch a cold,” he murmured. “I’d be worried if you got sick.”
My entire body stiffened.

For one brief second, I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I was touched.
Because I was disgusted
I had seen this before.
Felt this before.

Logan had done the exact same thing countless times during our relationship. Whenever I shivered, his jacket would find its way around my shoulders. Whenever I complained about the cold, he would pull me closer and tell me to be careful.
And back then?
Back then, I had loved it.
I had looked at him and thought I was the luckiest woman alive. I used to imagine other women watching us and wishing they had an Alpha as thoughtful and caring as mine.
How embarrassingly blind I had been.
My fingers curled around the edges of his jacket.
The same hands that had once clung to him lovingly now wanted nothing more than to rip the thing
off and throw it straight into the gutter.
Logan wasn’t caring.
He wasn’t sweet.
He was probably the most useless Alpha I had ever known.
I swallowed the bitter laugh rising in my throat and said nothing.
When a cab finally pulled up, I got in without looking back. Logan remained outside, watching as I
settled into the seat,
I caught sight of him through the window just as he lifted his hand in a small wave.
My eyes rolled so hard they almost hurt.
Gosh.
The cab pulled away.

Lwatched Lugan grow smaller through the rear window until the streets swallowed him completely, and only then did the tightness in my chest begin to ease.
But not enough.
Never enough.
By the time the driver reached the borders of Ashwood Pack, I was done.
“Stop here.”
The driver pulled over, and I immediately stepped out of the cab.
I left Logan’s jacket behind.
The scarf he had bought me stayed there too.
I didn’t want either of them touching me.
The moment the cab disappeared down the road, I closed my eyes.
Karla was already clawing eagerly beneath my skin.
Finally.
My bones shifted.
A familiar warmth surged through me as my body transformed, and seconds later, Karla stood where I
had been.
Then we ran.
No hesitation.
No second thoughts.
Our paws tore across the earth, striking the ground harder and harder as we raced through the
darkness.
Karla was furious.
I could feel it in every powerful stride, in the way she pushed us faster despite the fact that there was
absolutely no need to hurry.
You are angry.
I’m aware.

She didn’t need to be told twice.
The wind tore through our fur as the trees blurred around us. By the time we reached home, my anger
had not disappeared, but the suffocating pressure inside my chest had loosened.
Karia slowed to a stop outside the house.
For a moment, I remained there, panting heavily.
I couldn’t go inside yet.
Not like this.
Not with Logan’s voice still echoing in my head.
I’d be worried if you got sick.
I snarled softly.
The sound startled even me.
So instead, I paced.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
The cool night air pressed against my fur while I tried to force my thoughts into silence.
Eventually, my breathing slowed.
Only then did I shift back.
I quickly slipped inside the house and closed the door behind me.
Darkness greeted me.
The lights were off.
I looked around.
Lucian wasn’t home.
A small frown formed between my brows.

Lhad started noticing something strange about him lately.
His routine was almost impossible to predict.
Sometimes he was at home.
Sometimes he disappeared to where don’t know.
It was nothing like what I had expected from the Alpha of Blackwood Pack.
I spent most of my time moving between places because I had a purpose.
Everything I did was part of a plan.
A very specific plan.
One that would eventually leave Logan with absolutely nothing.
But Lucian?
What exactly was his excuse?
Wasn’t an Alpha supposed to be involved with his pack?
He didn’t have to spend every waking moment there, but still…
Lucian was absent.
A lot.
I stared into the darkness for another moment before shrugging.
Not my business.
Whatever Lucian did with his life had absolutely nothing to do with me.
I walked to the couch and dropped onto it, exhausted.
I would only close my eyes for a minute.
Just one minute.
Then I would go upstairs.
With that thought, I leaned back and closed my eyes.
The next thing I knew, morning had come.

Daylight spilled into the living room when I finally woke up.
For several seconds, I didn’t move.
Then I noticed the warmth covering me
A blanket.
I slowly looked down at it.
My brows pulled together.
I hadn’t brought this here.
In fact, I didn’t even know where the blankets were kept in this enormous house.
I sat up slowly, rubbing at my eyes.
Before the realization could fully settle in, Karla’s delighted voice echoed inside my head.
Mr. Mysterious is back.
My eyes widened slightly.
I had fallen asleep so deeply that I hadn’t even noticed Lucian coming home.
And apparently, I hadn’t noticed him covering me with a blanket either.
I looked around the empty living room.
Nothing.
No sign of him.
Curiosity slowly crept into me.
I stood and began walking toward Lucian’s side of the house.
His room.
The door was closed.
I stopped in front of it.
I should leave.

I had absolutely no reason to be standing outside his bedroom like some suspicious intruder.
You want to know where he is.
I ignored Karla.
Just open it.
I glanced down the hallway.
No one was around.
Before my conscience could stop me, I quietly pushed the door open.
I took a small peek inside.
Lucian was there.
Asleep.
I froze.
A blanket was loosely wrapped around his lower body, but his upper body was completely exposed.
Karla became suspiciously interested.
Let’s go inside.
No.
I stared despite myself.
His arm was thrown above his head, the muscles in his chest and shoulders relaxed in sleep. The morning light spilled faintly across his skin, making it impossible not to notice just how toned he was.
I blinked.
Once.
Then twice.
What was I doing?
My face immediately heated.
I stepped back from the door.

We should leave, Karla said innocently.
I narrowed my eyes.
That was your idea from the beginning.
I quietly shut the door.
“I shouldn’t be spying on people,” I muttered to myself.
Lucian deserved his privacy.
Especially while he was sleeping.
That sounded completely reasonable.

Even if I was saying it while standing outside the door of the man I had just spent the last few minutes
staring at.
I quickly turned around and headed toward my room.
I needed to get dressed.
Today was an important day for Silvercrest Pack.
Well…
Important might have been a generous word.
After everything Celine had managed to destroy with her own two hands, the pack desperately needed something that resembled a fresh start.
Today, they would be recruiting new healers.
Silvercrest Pack depended heavily on herbs, healers, and several other resources, so bringing in new
talent should have been something worth celebrating.
Unfortunately, everyone knew the truth.
This wasn’t really a new beginning.
It was an attempt to repair what had already been broken.
Still, I had to be there.
By the time I arrived at the packhouse, the place was already busy.
And then I saw Celine.

She was dressed as though she were attending the Moon Goddess’s coronation rather than a healer
recruitment ceremony.
Her outfit was impossible to miss, and the heavy makeup on her face only made the entire thing
worse.
A laugh nearly escaped me.
It looks like the Moon Princess pooped on her, Karla commented.
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing.
The contrast between us was almost amusing.
Celine looked like she had spent hours preparing to make sure no one could possibly look away from her,
I, on the other hand, wore a simple white gown that flared softly around my legs. A silver band decorated my waist, with a moonstone resting at its center.
“Oh, Luna Ava is here.”
Celine’s voice carried through the room.
I looked up.
She was smiling.
Too brightly.
She walked toward me.
“You look so good.”
Her tone was sweet.
Her eyes weren’t.
I simply stared at her.
I had no interest in complimenting whatever… that was.
Celine’s smile twitched slightly when I remained silent.
Then she lifted her chin.

My brother has officially decided to rehire me I’ll be focusing on the main herbs data from now on.”
I stared at her.
So what exactly are we supposed to do? Throw her a parade? Karla muttered.
Celine waited.
And waited.
When I still said nothing, she finally frowned.
“Aren’t you going to congratulate me?”
The pride in her voice was almost impressive.
Almost.
I smiled.
“Congratulations.”
Her expression brightened immediately.
Then I added, “After all, not everyone can find another job after ruining a huge launch and helping drive their Alpha toward bankruptcy.”
The smile disappeared.
Slowly.
Beautifully.
Celine’s face tightened as she stared at me.
I could practically see her biting back whatever she truly wanted to say.
For once, I was enjoying the silence.
“Well,” she finally said, forcing a smile back onto her face, “as Luna, you should be able to contribute more to the pack.”
I tilted my head slightly.
But I didn’t answer.
I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of believing she had gotten underneath my skin.

“We’re going to take pictures with the new healers,” she continued. “And I know you’re the Luna, but…”
She paused.
Waiting for me to ask her what she meant.
I didn’t.
Her expression flickered.
Then she continued for me.
“But could you stay at the back?”
I stared at her.
Celine’s smile widened.
“Or perhaps not appear at all.”
There it was.
The real reason she had walked over to me.
“Since you’ve contributed little to nothing to this pack,” she continued smoothly, “you don’t mind standing at the back, do you?”

CELINE’S POINT OF VIEW

I stared at Ava, and disgust crawled through me so quickly that I had to force my expression into
something pleasant.
Just looking at her irritated me.
The way she stood there. The way everyone still referred to her as Luna Ava. The way she carried herself as though she actually belonged at Logan’s side.
Please.
Even if Logan refused to divorce her, it wasn’t because Ava meant anything to him.
It was because of her family.
Because of Evander.
Ava’s father had influence, connections, and a name that could open doors for Logan and this pack.
Ava herself? What was so special about her?
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
If Logan truly valued her, why had he been the one to bring me back to the packhouse? Why had he made sure I had a place here while Ava-the supposed Luna of this pack-was never treated like
someone he actually wanted beside him?
The answer was obvious.
Ava was useful only because of the name she carried.
Without it, she would be nothing.
I lifted my chin and gave her my sweetest smile.
The smile remained frozen on my face as the silence stretched between us. After a few seconds, the muscles around my mouth were beginning to ache.
Finally, Ava spoke.
“Okay. I’ll go stand in the back.”
For a moment, I simply stared at her.
