That was it?

She didn’t argue. She didn’t make a scene. She didn’t even question me.

She simply turned around and walked toward the back row.

A small flicker of surprise passed through me.

I hadn’t expected it to be that easy.

Then again, perhaps Ava was finally beginning to understand her place.

Tala appeared beside me, her lips curling into a knowing smile.

“It seems Luna Ava is quite self-aware.”

I glanced at her without saying anything, but I couldn’t stop the smugness from spreading across my

face.

Exactly.

Soon, the new healers began arriving at the packhouse, one after another. Conversations filled the room, blending with the sound of footsteps and greetings. At the front, Logan and Axel were deep in

discussion.

Even Kieran, the Gamma, was there.

And, of course, I spotted him speaking with Ava.

My eyes rolled before I could stop them.

Honestly, she was the worst Luna any pack could ever ask for.

She barely involved herself in pack matters, barely made an effort to connect with anyone, and yet somehow people still treated her like she deserved that title.

I turned away from her and headed toward Logan and Axel.

Both men looked up when I approached.

I smiled brightly.

Axel, as usual, looked as though the entire world had personally offended him. His brows were drawn together in that permanent frown of his.

Logan, however, barely seemed to notice me.

His eyes were moving across the room.

Once.

Then again.

What the heck is he looking for? Runa snarled inside my head.

I watched him for another second before moving closer.

Close enough for my voice to be low when I leaned toward him.

“What are you looking for?” I asked softly.

The moment he opened his mouth, every pleasant feeling inside me seemed to shrivel.

“I’m looking for Ava. Have you seen her?”

For one horrible second, I simply stared at him.

Of course.

Of course he was looking for her.

My teeth pressed together as heat rushed through my chest.

Runa growled.

I knew it.

I forced the irritation down so quickly it almost made me dizzy.

My smile remained perfectly intact.

“Well…” I began, pretending to search the room with my eyes. “I saw her walking toward the back row.”

I paused before adding casually, “For such an important recruitment, I don’t know why she didn’t want to stand in the front. Especially when she’s the Luna.”

“I see…”

Logan lowered his gaze, apparently lost in thought.

I watched him carefully.

Did he feel guilty?

Did it bother him that Ava was standing at the back?

The thought irritated me even more.

So, before the silence could stretch any longer, I slipped my arm through his and beamed at him.

“Logan, isn’t it nice having me here with you?”

His body went still.

For the briefest moment, he hesitated.

Then he gently-but unmistakably-pulled his arm away.

My smile vanished.

I stared at him.

He looked around, checking whether anyone nearby was watching us with suspicion.

A laugh nearly escaped me, but it came out as something sharper.

“Oh, come on, Logan.” I frowned. “It’s not a crime for a sister to hold her brother’s arm.”

His gaze shifted past me.

Straight toward Ava.

I followed his eyes.

She wasn’t even looking at him.

Logan frowned slightly before nodding, as though reassuring himself of something.

A few moments later, Axel joined us at the front, and the new healers gathered nearby for the

photographs.

But even as everyone settled into position, I noticed the glances.

People were looking around.

Looking toward the back,

Wondering why their Luna wasn’t standing beside her Alpha.

I couldn’t have cared less.

Because that was where she belonged.

At the back.

We took several photographs with the new healers, and once that was done, more pack members began gathering around.

Logan had decided to use the event as an opportunity to sell some of the older herbs that had been sitting around for far too long. If we could clear out the old stock, the healers could begin working with

newer supplies.

The growing crowd also gave the new healers an opportunity to sell their products and interact with the pack members.

I turned toward Logan.

“Logan-”

“Celine.”

The way he said my name made me stop.

His brows were furrowed, but he wasn’t looking at me.

He was staring across the room.

I followed his gaze.

A woman was standing with Ava.

There was something familiar about her.

She carried herself with a certain confidence, and something about her face tugged at my memory. I

narrowed my eyes, studying her.

Then it came back to me.

Blackwood Pack.

She was a designer.

A rather popular one, if I remembered correctly.

She had attended the family banquet before.

She had even come specifically to speak with Ava.

My stomach twisted.

What does she want now? Runa muttered, already sounding disgusted.

I don’t know, I replied. But I’m going to find out.

The last thing I wanted was for Ava to gain some new connection from Blackwood Pack.

Especially one that might actually benefit her.

I started toward them.

But Logan’s hand closed around my wrist.

“Where are you going?”

I looked at him and smiled.

“Oh. I just wanted to check on Ava.”

“No. Stay here.”

My smile tightened.

I followed his gaze back toward Ava and the designer.

“She’s from Blackwood Pack,” Logan said quietly. “Any mistake Ava makes around her won’t be good

for this pack.”

I almost scoffed.

Who was he worried about?

The pack?

Or Ava?

“Who knows what she wants?” he continued.

I watched the woman smiling at Ava.

The two of them looked comfortable.

Too comfortable.

“Maybe she wants to check out this pack and report back to her Alpha.”

“I don’t think so, Logan.”

“What do you know?”

The sharpness in his voice caught me off guard.

I took a step back.

Runa went silent for a second before commenting.

Yeesh.

I resisted the urge to glare at him.

Instead, I folded my arms and watched from a distance.

Ava and the designer were getting along far too well, and the sight of it made something bitter rise

inside me.

I couldn’t let that woman leave this pack with a good impression of Ava.

Not when she was a popular designer from Blackwood Pack.

Not when Ava could potentially gain opportunities through her.

If anyone deserved an opportunity to build connections with someone like that, it was me.
