Chapter 4

Sarah stared at me in disbelief. Her grip on Joshua’s hand tightened.

But Joshua looked down and scolded her, his voice tense with barely held frustration.

“Allison’s right. You should stop.”

Sarah frowned, but quickly looped her artis around him again, acting affectionate. “I was just teasing, babe.”

“Come on, we ran into her. It must be fate. Why not help her out?”

She kissed him again, her tone syrupy sweet.

“Let me do something nice for Allison, please?”

Joshua seemed helpless. He turned to me.

“Allison, Sarah’s always looked up to you. You’ve been her role model. She really means well.”

Sarah gave a charming smile when I didn’t answer.

“There’s a violin competition show I’m working on. If you’re interested, I could get you a trainee

slot.”

“I’ll be one of the judges, so I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”

I let out a cold laugh.

So this was her big gesture. She wanted to drag me in front of the cameras just to humiliate me on national television?

She had no idea the show was created for me by my mate.

And me? I was the internationally recognized, yet-unannounced head judge.

Just then, I saw Jake’s car pulling up.

I dusted off the spots they’d soiled on my coat and said flatly, “No, thank you.”

“And unless there’s something else, let’s not see each other again.”

I was about to walk away when Sarah grabbed my wrist.

“Allison, where do you live? I’ll have Joshua drive you.”

I shook my head and walked straight toward Jake’s car.

Sarah held Joshua back as he moved to follow. “I think Allison’s married,” she said thoughtfully

“Look, her husband’s here to pick her up.”

“He looks kind of old, but maybe he treats her well?”

In a rare move, Joshua pulled away from her hand and stormed to the car.

He yanked the door open before I could close it.

His voice was cold, his eyes unreadable.

“Allison, this is your husband?”

“This is what you meant by doing well?”

“Where’s that proud, untouchable version of you?”

“He’s not good enough for you. Break the mate bond. If it’s about money, I’ll send it.”

I opened my mouth, then stopped. Why was I even trying to explain myself to him?

I simply pushed him back and shut the door.

‘I

“If you really feel sorry for me,” I said quietly, “then give me back my hands.”

Nothing else mattered.

And we both knew that was the one thing he could never do.

Sarah bit her lip, hard. “Allison! If you’d just listened to Joshua back then, you wouldn’t have ended up like this-”

“Sarah, that’s enough,” Joshua snapped, frowning.

Before they could react, I gave Jake the signal to drive.

On the way, my daughter Hailey called. “Mommy, are you home yet? I’ve got a surprise waiting for

you!”

My heart softened instantly.

She was the one who’d won the award, and yet she was preparing something for me.

“I’ll be home in just a minute, sweetheart. Stay put, okay?”

What I didn’t expect was to see Joshua’s car parked right behind mine as soon as I got out.

They had followed me.

Sarah clung to Joshua’s arm and spoke before I could say anything.

“Allison, it was my idea to come.”

“I just wanted to see how you’re really doing.”

She looked over my shoulder at the four-story pack house behind me, her lips curling into a smirk.

“You’re not seriously giving late-night violin lessons, are you?”

She paused, then sighed dramatically.

“Well, I guess with a plagiarism record, most people wouldn’t hire you. You take what you can get, right?”

“But you do know this house belongs to the fullmoon pack, right?”

Of course I did.

The fullmoon pack was the richest and most powerful in the werewolf realm. Even Joshua had to show respect when he met Alpha Adam.

Sarah took two steps closer, her tone sharp and threatening.

“If Alpha Adam finds out you lied to him, even Joshua and I won’t be able to save you.”

“Allison, maybe try being honest for once. It’s called integrity.”

Right then, my phone rang again.

“Mommy! I see you from the window!” Hailey chirped.

“Why aren’t you coming in yet? My surprise is ready!”

Just hearing her soft little voice swept all the tension from my chest.

}

“I’m coming now, bug,” I said with a smile.

As I ended the call, Joshua stood frozen.

He stared at my phone, his expression shocked. “Daughter?” he asked, stunned.

“Allison, you have a kid?”

A second later, Hailey came running out of the house, her tiny figure bouncing with excitement

under the porch lights. She threw her arms around my leg, rubbing her cheek against me.

“Mommy! If you don’t come in now, my surprise is gonna burst!”

i picked Hailey up and kissed her soft cheek. “Alright, sweetie. I’m going in now.”

Behind me, I heard Sarah gasp.

“Allison… this child…” Her voice trembled with disbelief.

“She’s your daughter?”
