The call came while I was going through Flourish’s report on the inactive warrior accounts.
One of my patrol captains didn’t wait for me to ask why he was calling me directly.
“Alpha, we have an injured warrior at the eastern perimeter. He was hit while helping two pack members back in through the outer road.”
I stood up. “How bad?”
“He’s alive, but the healer wants him at the pack clinic now. The patrol found signs of an attack near the road. We don’t know who did it.”
“Lock down the eastern perimeter. Nobody leaves Dartwood without clearance, and every patrol checks in with its captain. I’m on my way.”
My wolf wanted blood the whole walk to the clinic. I’d spent days chasing old records and credentials that led nowhere, and now someone had brought the problem onto my land and left one of my warriors bleeding.
Taren was on a treatment bed when I got there, his uniform cut open at the side while a healer cleaned a deep wound under his ribs.
He was awake, though his face tightened every time the healer pressed near the injury.
“What happened?”
He tried to sit up. The healer pushed him back down. “Stay down, Taren.”
“I saw movement near the road,” Taren told me. “I sent the others ahead

and checked the tree line. Someone hit me from the side before I could see anything.”
“Did you catch a scent?”
“Two, maybe three. I couldn’t separate them. There was something sharp mixed in.”
The healer looked at me. “His wolf is responding, but he lost a lot of blood before the patrol got him here. I need time.”
“Will he recover?”
“I think so.”
I turned back to Taren. “Did they say anything?”
“No. They didn’t take anything either. One strike, then they left when the others came back.”
That made no sense. If they wanted to rob him, they failed. If they wanted him dead, they quit with the job half done.
“Rest,” I told him. “We’ll handle the rest.”
The patrol captain was waiting in the corridor with a report from the warriors who reached the road after the attack.
They’d found torn-up ground, a few drops of blood, and tracks that broke apart before reaching the main path.
“No clear direction?”
“No, Alpha. The tracks crossed the road and scattered. I didn’t want to pull the whole patrol off the perimeter to chase them.”

“Good call.”

I read the report twice. It could have been an ordinary territory dispute, but the timing was wrong. Flourish had found dead and missing wolves logging into dormant systems, and the watcher had left scent traces around our estate. Now a Dartwood warrior was hurt, with no attempt to steal, kill, or send a message.
“Double the watches on the eastern road,” I told the captain. “Pairs only, mind-link open, and nobody chases anyone past the boundary without backup. Keep every scent sample for the healers and security.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“If they come back, I want them alive if possible.”
He hesitated before nodding.
I went back to my office and called Flourish. She came in with the latest F- Tech report in hand, already aware one of our warriors had been hurt.
“Is he going to be okay?”
“The healer thinks so. He was attacked protecting our people.”
She read the brief and looked up. “Do we know who did it?”
“No. Tracks that go nowhere and scents we can’t separate.”
“Then we need to find out if this ties to the other incidents before we act.”
I pushed the report across the desk. “How many more incidents do you need? Someone is using dead wolves’ credentials, someone is watching our estate, and now my warrior is in the clinic.”
“I’m not saying ignore it. I’m saying we don’t know it’s the same people.”

“And while we wait for proof, they get another chance to hurt someone.”
“If you send warriors across the border without knowing who you’re looking for, you could hand them exactly what they want.”
“I’m not going to sit in this office while they test how far they can go.”
“Then stop treating every unknown attack as a reason to start a war.”
That landed badly. I stepped away from the desk before I said something
worse.
“You think I want a war? One of my people is in the clinic because he did his job. I’ve got an enemy using identities that should be buried with their owners, and I can’t tell my patrols where to look.”
“I know what you’re dealing with.” She set the report down. “But you’re about to turn your fear for this pack into an order that puts every warrior in Dartwood at risk.”
“My fear?”
“Yes. You’re angry because you can’t control what happens next. I get that. But if you retaliate before we know who hit Taren, you could go after the wrong pack or leave the borders open while your best fighters are out.”
I wanted to tell her she had no business questioning how I protect my own people. I held it back. She wasn’t brushing off the attack. She was asking me to think past the man in the clinic, and I hated that she had a point.
It didn’t make me any less angry.
“I could order a full mobilization tonight. Every border unit, every warrior we have. We search the surrounding territory until someone answers for this.”

“And if that’s what the attacker wants? You, pulling your forces out of
position?”
“Then we adjust.”
“After what? Another attack? A dead warrior? A border fight with a pack that had nothing to do with it?”
I slammed my palm on the desk. “I’m not waiting for someone to die before I defend Dartwood.”
She didn’t flinch, but her voice sharpened. “And I won’t call reckless retaliation protection. You asked me to help trace these systems because you know this is bigger than one attack. Don’t throw that away because you’re furious.”
Neither of us spoke for a while. My wolf wanted action, and so did I. Instead I picked up the patrol report and read it again.
“I’m reinforcing the borders,” I said finally. “Nobody crosses without authorization, and every patrol stays within supporting distance. But I’m not declaring war tonight.”
“That’s a start.”
“Don’t mistake it for agreement.”
“I won’t.”
She gathered her report and headed for the door. Before she reached it, my secure phone buzzed. The patrol captain had sent another message.
They’d found a new scent sample near the eastern road, this one farther inside Dartwood territory.

The analysis hadn’t identified it yet, but one line made me call Flourish back.
The sample matched traces collected outside our estate.
