Alexander’s deep, pleasant voice came at just the right moment, speaking directly into my left ear- the one that could still hear.
Those warm hands had already withdrawn, but I was slow to react, feeling heat where he had held
“I’m fine. Thank you-if not for you, I might have-”
“Protecting a princess is my duty.”
Alexander replied, the hint of a smile playing at the corner of his mouth.
For some reason, my ears began to burn.
I thought I might be coming down with a fever.
By the time Olivia took me to my room, my ears were still red, which alarmed her:
“Is it too hot today? Violet, why is your face so flushed?”
I was too embarrassed to say anything, but fortunately, Olivia had already circled the room and changed the subject:
“Looking at this, I’d say my brother’s taste isn’t half bad, for a guy.”
That’s when I finally noticed the room’s decor.
Cream-colored walls with rose embossing, fresh mint-green curtains, and a bed shaped like a flower bud-the entire room resembled a wild rose garden.
“Did… Mr. Blackwood arrange all this?”
Olivia nodded:
“Violet, don’t be so formal! You can call him by his full name, or… he’s only a few years older than you, so you could call him ‘Alex’ like I do.”
“Wouldn’t that be inappropriate?”
“My brother’s really easygoing. You can call him whatever you want!”
Hearing Olivia describe the powerful head of the Blackwood family as “easygoing” struck me as strange, yet somehow it seemed accurate.
After all, he had just saved me.
Remembering his handsome face so close to mine, I couldn’t help my racing heart.

Perhaps it was because I’d been through so much in the past few days, or maybe the room’s decor gave me a sense of security, but I fell asleep quickly.
The next morning, as soon as I came downstairs, I saw Alexander.
With just the two of us in the dining room, I awkwardly greeted him.
id you sleep well?” he asked.
I was about to answer when Alexander leaned toward me.
He came so close that his fresh cologne seemed to envelop me completely, making me unconsciously hold my breath.
Fortunately, he quickly moved away, his fingertips holding a pale pink petal:
“A flower petal fell on your shoulder. I hope you don’t mind my forwardness.”
Alexander truly had been blessed with good looks. Just the slight curve of his smile seemed to make even sunlight pale in comparison.
I quickly lowered my head:
“I should be thanking you, Mr…. Alex.”
Somehow, halfway through my sentence, I remembered Olivia’s words from the night before, and “Alex” slipped out. When I realized what I’d said, my face started burning again.
Thankfully, Alexander didn’t seem to mind. He just calmly finished his breakfast and left for work.
