Chapter 35
AVA’S POINT OF VIEW D
I was taken aback.
So now he wanted me to come back home?
For a brief moment, I almost let myself believe there was something more behind the question. But I knew Logan better than that. Whatever had prompted him to ask, it had nothing to do with concern for
He wanted to know what Seraphina had said to me.
That was all.
I kept my expression neutral. There was no point allowing Logan’s pride to mask as affection when I knew exactly what it was.
“I have to go back to the packhouse and work overtime tonight,” I said, forcing a tiredness into my voice that wasn’t entirely feigned. “I don’t have much time left. I’ve been working overtime at the packhouse a lot lately.”
Logan watched me for a moment.
I noticed the way his chest rose and fell before his expression gradually settled. Then he gave a small
nod.
“You’ve really worked hard.”
The words sounded almost sincere.
Almost.
I stared at him, resisting the urge to roll my eyes. If he thought that look in his eyes was enough to fool
me, he was giving himself far too much credit.
Before I could respond, I felt another stare burning into me.
I turned my head.
Celine.
Her eyes were fixed on me, fury practically radiating from them. Her jaw was tight, and the smile she
had worn earlier was nowhere to be found.

If looks sould burn, I would have melted where stood.
Logan turned back to me.
“You know, Ava…”
“I’m really tired, Logan.” I cut him off before he could finish. “It’s been a long day.”
I didn’t wait for him to respond. I turned and started walking away.
I had barely taken a few steps when I heard his footsteps behind me.
“You’re going to the packhouse, right?”
I stopped.

The question was innocent enough, but the way he asked it made me glance over my shoulder.
He wanted confirmation.
I could have teased him. I could have dragged the answer out just to get on his nerves, but I was too
exhausted to play games with him tonight.
“Yes, Alpha.”
Something flickered across his face at the title.
Surprise, perhaps.
I didn’t stay around long enough to find out.
The moment I turned away, I shifted.
Bones and muscles gave way to fur, and within seconds, Karla took over. My paws struck the ground
as I broke into a run, the cool night air rushing through my fur.
The packhouse wasn’t far, but my eyes were already beginning to feel heavy. Even so, the wind
against my face cleared some of the fog in my head.
Seraphina Blackwood.
The thought returned before I could stop it.
Why had she traveled all the way from her own pack to Ashwood?
She hadn’t come for something insignificant. Someone like Seraphina didn’t simply leave her pack and
appear in another territory without a reason.

And that brought me back to Lucian
Why was he here?

He was an Alpha. A powerful one at that. He should have been in his own pack, dealing with his own affairs, yet he had been spending his time in Ashwood.
The question had been circling my mind for days, and tonight it felt impossible to ignore.
By the time I reached the packhouse, I was too exhausted to think about it anymore.
I shifted back into my human form and stepped inside.
The building was almost completely silent.
I stood there for a moment, staring at the empty corridor.
There was no way I was going home tonight. If I went back to my house in this state, I might collapse the moment I walked through the door.
And I hadn’t eaten much at the banquet.
My stomach growled loudly.
Karla stirred immediately.
Food.
I almost laughed.
“Yes, I know,” I muttered under my breath.
I needed to eat before I did anything else.
My original plan had been to start working on the new herbs our pack was preparing to launch. We needed to get production moving again so we could begin distributing them the way Mistfen Pack did.
Especially after Alpha Kion’s situation had finally died down.
We had lost enough already.
Now we needed to make up for it.
Unfortunately, Logan didn’t seem to understand the concept of rebuilding anything unless it somehow benefited him. As far as I could see, he was more interested in using either me or my father to get whatever he wanted.

Which was exactly why exposing him was becoming more important.
I walked over to one of the tables and sank into a chair, releasing a long breath.
The packhouse was empty.
Perfect.
I pulled out my phone and opened a food delivery app, scrolling through the restaurants that were still open at this hour.
I had barely settled on what I wanted when my phone buzzed.
I glanced down.
Lucian.
Lucian: Still socializing?
My thumb hovered over the screen.
Of all the things he could have asked, that was what he chose?
Then I remembered Seraphina.
His sister had come to the banquet.
I wondered if he already knew.
I decided not to ask directly. Instead, I kept my response casual.
Me: Yes. It’s been over for a while. I’m working overtime at our packhouse now, and I’m going to stay up all night, so I won’t be home tonight.
I read the message once.
Then again.
Something made me add another sentence.
Me: I don’t think I’ll be coming home for the next few days.
I sent it.
Then I waited.
Nothing.

A-minute passed.
Then another.
Still nothing.
I stared at the screen until it dimmed.
Why wasn’t he replying?
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Was he angry?
But why would he be angry that I wasn’t coming home?
That couldn’t be it.

After all, Lucian had rented me one of the most expensive houses in Ashwood Pack for an absurdly
cheap price. The only condition he’d given me was that whenever I cooked, I would save him a portion.
And, admittedly, I hadn’t exactly been keeping my end of the bargain.
A tiny knot formed in my stomach.
What if he was annoyed enough to refuse to rent the house to me again?
Karla had gone quiet.
She was tired too, but I could feel the uneasiness rolling through our bond, her heartbeat practically
echoing my own.
I stared at Lucian’s name again.
Maybe I should explain.
My thumb moved toward the keyboard.
Before I could type a single word, my phone rang.
I answered immediately.
“Good day. Are you Luna Ava?”
“Yes, that’s me.” I straightened in my chair. “How may I help you?”
“I’m outside Silvercrest Packhouse. Could you please come down and pick up your takeout?”

My brows drew together.
“My takeout?”
I hadn’t ordered anything.
For a second, suspicion prickled through me.
Who had sent it?
And why?
Could it be a trap?
If it was, I was ready.”
I got up and headed downstairs.

When I stepped outside, I found a delivery man standing near the entrance, checking his watch. He looked up when he saw me and immediately straightened.
“Luna Ava.”
He dipped his head respectfully.
I could tell from his expression that he didn’t actually recognize me. He only knew the title.
“I’m from Moonlit Manor in Ashwood Pack,” he explained.
Moonlit Manor.
I blinked.
“Oh.”
The realization hit me.
“Thank you.”
I accepted the bag from him, and after another polite nod, he turned and left.
I stared down at the package in my hands.
Then I opened it.
A burger.
Fries.

Chicken wings.
A bottle of water.
And a Freeze Mix soda.
My stomach immediately betrayed me with a loud growi.
Karla practically came alive inside me.
Finally.
I laughed under my breath.
“Okay, okay.”
But my amusement faded when I looked at the food again.
I hadn’t ordered this.
There was only one person who came to mind.
I pulled out my phone.
Me: Did you order takeout for me?
I didn’t have to wait long.
A few minutes later, my phone dinged.
Lucian: Yes.
My brows knitted together.
I looked at the food again.
Then at the message.

I knew roughly how much a meal like this cost, and I still had Lucian’s account details from transferring my rent.
I wasn’t going to owe him for it.
Not this time.
I transferred the money immediately.
Then I sent another message.

Me: Please accept this. I don’t like owing favors.
His response came soon after.
Lucian: Okay.
I stared at the screen.
That was it?
No argument?
No lecture?

I shrugged and set my phone aside.
Maybe I had been wrong about him.
Lucian had a cold exterior, but there was something beneath it that didn’t quite match the man everyone else seemed to see. He had already ordered food for me twice, and both times he had done it without making a big deal out of it.
There was a quiet kindness to him.
The kind he seemed determined not to let anyone notice.
I picked up my phone again.
Me: You’ve already ordered takeout for me twice, so let me treat you this time. You pick a restaurant, and we’ll go eat together when I’m done with my work.
I sent the message.
Then I finally took a bite of my burger.
My entire body seemed to relax.
I hadn’t realized just how hungry I was until then.
Karla was equally pleased, practically purring through our bond as I reached for the fries.
My phone buzzed,
I swallowed and checked the screen.
Lucian had replied.
Just one word.
0 10:43

Sovereign.
I nearly choked on my drink.
“Sovereign?”
I stared at the message.
Of course.
I knew Sovereign.
Everyone knew Sovereign.

It was one of those places people didn’t simply walk into and ask for a table. Reservations were difficult enough, and invitations were even harder to come by.
And it was located in Lucian’s territory.
Of course, he probably didn’t need a reservation.
He was the Alpha.
Still…
My gaze dropped to the half-eaten burger in my hand.
Sovereign wasn’t exactly cheap.
I swallowed and slowly placed my phone on the table.
If I was serious about treating him, this wasn’t going to be as simple as buying him dinner.
Blackwood Pack wasn’t anywhere close to Ashwood or Silvercrest.
I’d have to fly there.
Which meant paying for his meal and our flight.
I leaned back in my chair.
Why had I offered this?
I rubbed my forehead, already regretting my impulsive generosity.
But beneath the concern about the cost was another question that refused to disappear.
Why was Lucian in Ashwood in the first place?

Blackwood was one of the most powerful packs in the region, perhaps even beyond it.
An Alpha like him had no obvious reason to spend so much time away from his own territory.
And yet, there he was.
In Ashwood.
Close to me.
I pushed the thought aside.
Whatever Lucian’s reason was, I would figure it out eventually.
For now, I was exhausted.
I finished my meal, gathered my things, and headed to another floor of the packhouse. One of the reserved rooms was empty, so I unlocked it and stepped inside.
The moment my head touched the pillow, the exhaustion I’d been fighting all night finally won.
Karla curled quietly inside me.
And before I could think about Logan, Seraphina, Lucian, or anything else waiting for me tomorrow, sleep pulled me under.
