Chapter 38
“I have the right because I’m her-”
“Enough!”
In a blind panic, Sylvie swung back, slapping Owen across the face so hard he stumbled backward several steps in shock.
Lifting her chin haughtily, Sylvie leveled a threat at him. “This is a school. You dare lay a hand on me in front of my classmates? I know my dad gave you permission to discipline me, but you are nothing but a driver for our family! Don’t actually think you can teach me a lesson! Now go get the car! Do you want to make the Sutton family a laughingstock in front of everyone?”
Every word out of her mouth was a frantic reminder that they were at school and people were watching.
Seeing this, Owen, despite boiling with rage, could do nothing but turn and storm off in a
huff.
Inside the classroom, Nova stretched her neck, trying to get a better look at the drama. But before she knew it, Alaric had packed all her practice tests into her backpack. By the time she snapped out of her daze, her desk was perfectly clear, and he casually slung her bag over his own shoulder.
“Show’s over. Let’s go home.”
He lightly flicked her forehead.
Nova blinked in surprise.
She didn’t know if she was imagining things, but she swore she just caught a fleeting glimpse of unprecedented gentleness in his eyes.
On the walk home, Nova kept glancing sideways at Alaric.
She remembered that in her past life, the Garrison family eventually found Alaric, and he moved back to Harborview to become their rightful heir. The news had completely shaken Lindenwood. Later, whenever he returned to Harborview, he constantly clashed with Caleb, ultimately becoming his fiercest rival.
Back then, as Caleb’s wife, she had used her family’s resources to help him fight Alaric on multiple occasions.
Eventually, Alaric stopped involving himself in Lindenwood affairs, choosing to consolidate his power back in Harborview.
But in this life, her intervention had brought Alaric into the Donald family instead.

She wondered what his future held now. Would the Garrisons still come looking for him?
Summer break officially began, and Alaric had designed a strict schedule specifically for her
Thanks to her hard work over the past two months, Nova had successfully dropped her weight to a hundred and thirty pounds.
Summer was the perfect time for a final sprint. Since she was still growing, this was the absolute best window for weight loss.
“Breakfast: eggs, orange juice, and a glass of warm water.”
Early the next morning, Alaric set the food down in front of her.
Dieting had become second nature to Nova now. Without a word, she started scarfing down her breakfast.
For lunch, Alaric simply washed a plate of strawberries and placed it on the table.
“Lunch: six strawberries,” he stated flatly.
Staring at the plate, Nova gave a firm nod. “Got it!”
Hiding around the corner, Mr. and Mrs. Donald couldn’t help but peek at their daughter.
“This poor kid, eating like a bird every day to lose weight,” Mrs. Donald sighed, shaking her
head.
“There’s not a single speck of meat on that plate,” Mr. Donald lamented.
That evening, Alaric stood in the kitchen with an apron tied around his waist, experimenting with healthy recipes.
Lured by the mouthwatering aroma, Nova scurried downstairs into the kitchen, her stomach practically touching her spine. “Alaric, what’s for dinner?”
“Pan-seared chicken breast.”
At the mention of meat, a brilliant sparkle lit up Nova’s eyes.
Meat! Actual meat!
Watching her practically drool, a faint smile softened Alaric’s features.
