The bell above the door jingled softly as the last customer exited the shop. I immediately
made a show of rearranging jars that were perfectly fine, wanting to appear busy. It was a few days since the last time Logan had been to the pack. A few days since I’d officially let him.
meet Elias. Since I’d let him pin me against the front door of the cabin and kiss me again.
I knew there was no way he hadn’t been stopping by the cabin. Mara herself had tried to
inform me of his visits but I hadn’t been interested in listening. Just like I wasn’t interested in
listening to whatever she had to say now, no matter how much she tried to catch my eyes.
Truth was, I was quite confident I already knew what she wanted to say.
She wasn’t stupid. She definitely would have caught onto the little game I was playing by now;
making sure Elias and I were not at home around the hours Logan usually showed up. I had
thought we were heading somewhere, I knew he had conversations with Mara even when I
myself was at the cabin, but I had never imagined they would be working together trying to
get me to do something I wasn’t completely ready to do yet.
I turned to water one of the plants and noticed Mara standing by the doorway. Her arms were
folded across her chest, and her gaze was fixed on me with a mixture of frustration and
concern. I broke our eye contact, forcing myself to carry on with inspecting the plants. She
walked to the front door, flipping the sign over before walking back to stand a few metres
away from me. “We need to talk,” She said, her voice firm.
I paused, my hand hovering over a jar of dried lavender. “About what?” I replied, feigning
ignorance.
Her eyes narrowed, disapproval rolling off her in waves. She seemed to be asking if I was really
going to act clueless right now. “About what you heard him say, you know that’s not what he
meant.”

I felt a pang of guilt at her confrontational tone, and struggled with brushing it aside because
deep down, I actually did know what he meant. Still, his determination scared me. How could
he be so sure things were going to be perfectly fine after Elias and I returned to the pack with
him? My mind went to the note I’d discovered in my room. The note I hadn’t yet told him I’d
found.
I couldn’t help but wonder about whoever had snuck in the note in the first place. Would they
follow Elias and me back to his pack? Or would they stay back here, punishing Mara for evil
practice
I felt a pang of guilt, knowing she was referring to the comment I’d overheard Logan make
about ensuring we returned to the pack. I turned slowly to face her, keeping my expression
guarded.
“Everything’s happening too fast, Mara,” I admitted. “I just… I just need some time to make
sense of it all,”
She stepped closer, her tone sharpening slightly. “Is that why you’ve been avoiding the cabin?
Taking Elias out to the clearing, the market-anywhere but here? So you wouldn’t have to face
Logan?”
I looked away, unable to hide the guilt flickering across my face. “I’m just trying to ensure I’m
making the best decision for Elias,” I said stubbornly. “It is still my duty to protect him-
“From what?” She challenged. “From his father? From the possibility of a future that includes
all of you together?”
My eyes flashed as a mix of fear and defiance coursed through my veins. I stopped pretending
to be busy with the plants. “What would you have me do, Mara?” I asked, forcing myself to
keep my tone respectful. “Why can’t you understand how hard this is for me? What would you
have me do that I haven’t already done?”
“Talk to Elias,” She replied without missing a beat. “And I mean actually talk to him. Stop

waiting for him to come to you first.” She clarified. “Get it together and find out if he’s made
up his mind.” The room fell silent again, her words bouncing off the walls of my mind. I
sighed, watching as she walked over to the door to flip back the sign.
“In the meantime,” She said quietly when she got back, “let the boy spend some quality time
with his father.”
The cabin was eerily silent when we got back. Or maybe that was just me filling the empty
space with worries I couldn’t shake off. I walked to my room to freshen up, heading out a few
minutes later to find Elias sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, his sketchbook
balanced on his knees. I stood in front of my room door for a few minutes, watching how
completely absorbed he was in his drawing.
It didn’t take long for Mara’s words to echo in my mind, challenging my avoidance and urging
me to confront the very thing I was scared of. What if he wanted us to return to the pack? The
voice at the back of my mind whispered my actual fear; what if he didn’t want us to return to
the pack? Taking a deep breath, I took a few steps towards him.
“Hey, I began softly, settling beside him on the floor. I ruffled his hair, studying his sketches
for a heartbeat before saying, “You’ve not gotten back to me yet,” He looked up with a look of
confusion on his face. I smoothed my hand down his hair. “How would you feel if we returned
to your father’s pack to live with him?” I asked directly.
He tilted his head, considering my words. “Would Mara come with us?” he asked after a
minute, his voice tinged with hope.
I hesitated, and then shook my head. “Probably not, sweetheart.”
He looked down at his sketchbook, tracing the lines of his drawing absentmindedly. “Can I
think about it?” he asked after a moment. His eyes jumped to mind as he said wisely, “It’s kind
of a big decision.” No truer words had been spoken.

I nodded, a lump forming in my throat.
“Of course. Take all the time you need.”
