The second the words left my lips, I felt him visibly relax.
It occurred to me then, just how much he’d been waiting for me to say the words, and mean them. And I
realized I did mean them. How could I not? For how long could I keep holding the past over/his head? Not
only were the words freeing for him, they were freeing for me as well. I hadn’t realized how much holding
on to the past had been affecting me as well.
For the first time in years, I felt like I could finally breathe properly. Like the knot in my chest had finally
loosened itself. A tiny voice at the back of my head reminded me of the secret I was still keeping from him,
and I forced myself to quiet this. I would enjoy this moment with him. Right now, it would be just us. No
thoughts of the past, and no thoughts of the future either. Later, I would worry about how he would react
to knowing I was Eldryn.
And his son was too.
I let Logan lead me to the table decorated with candles and a few rose petals. Everything was simply…
romantic. I met his eyes as I lowered myself down on the seat he’d pushed out for me. I’d had no idea he
had a single romantic bone in his large body. He gently tucked the chair a little underneath the table and
then lowered himself onto the chair beside me.
He upturned the plates on the table and a delighted chuckle escaped me. Every meal on the table was a
favorite of mine. From the chicken to the vegetables to the bread. I had other favorites, but he’d very well
made sure a good number of them were present-a feat I knew he could only have achieved with Elias’s
help. “This is wonderful,” I said sincerely, giving him the most genuine smile I could muster. “Thank you.”
And because I couldn’t help it, I leaned forward and very briefly touched my lips to his.
Minutes later we were digging into our little feast. We had an easy conversation as we ate, taking the time
to truly catch up on all the things that had happened during the time we’d been away from each other. We
sat in the small clearing long after we had finished with our meal. By the time the wind became a little
cold and a shiver racked through me, Logan finally suggested we head back to the mansion.
Elias was by the door, eagerly waiting for our arrival. Maurie was there with him, her eyes lighting up when she spotted Elias and I holding hands as we walked into the house. I gently pulled my hand from his, my
